In addition to the black forest cupcake, Contempo Cafe in Disney’s Contemporary Resort also carries this little beauty:
The Dulce de Leche cupcake is a vanilla cupcake piled high with sweet, creamy caramel frosting. Again, this isn’t the buttery, lard-y frosting you’ll find with the cupcakes over at Starring Rolls Cafe, which automatically makes it sub-par in my estimation, but those of you who prefer a lighter, creamier frosting will love this.
And I saved the best part for last! Cut inside the cupcake and there’s even more caramel-y goodness! What I find particularly interesting is that the frosting, as you can see, goes all the way through the cupcake — underneath the actual filling! I wonder if this is standard procedure in order to keep the inside of the cupcake from getting soggy, or if this just happened to be a fluke that day…
Overall, the cupcake was good, but doesn’t top my list. The taste was sweet and a bit two-dimensional; it was more “store-bought cupcake” when I wanted spectacular. When I’m next at Contempo I’ll grab the black forest cupcake before this one, but those who love caramel will likely love this!
I’d love to hear reviews and comments from those of you who have tried it (or are going to try it!)…
Alan says
I’m no cupcake expert but it looks to me like the caramel might be too thick to inject into the cupcake so they needed to cut it open to put the caramel in. Then they needed to use icing to cement the top to the bottom. This may be advanced engineering. Too bad it didn’t taste as good as it looks.
Emma Godbold (from the UK) says
I’ll take 10 of those please!! Love caramel, love cake!! I even queued for 30 minutes in Epcot to get my caramel cupcake from Germany…which was slightly more gooey than this one looks…but I’m not picky!

I had this last year and quite enjoyed it. It wasn’t the best cupcake I’ve ever had, but definitely up there.
Mark D. says
I am with you on using the real frosting, but this looks like it might be worth a try sometime.
On a side note, I just want to thank you for always going back to what made me a loyal reader of the DFB in the first place…….pictures of cupcakes that make me drool.

Can you get this as a dessert option with a counter service meal at the Contemo? I’m serious , how does the desset thing work here since there are more than the usual amount of sweets available here? Can you pick any sweet treat you want with your counter service meal plan with your entree?
AJ says
Alan — Ooh! Great engineering opinion!
Emma — I LOVE those caramel cupcakes in Epcot. Yum!
Liz — Thanks for the review 🙂
Mark — Ha! We’ll always be there for ya! I’m hoping to get over to Starring Rolls to capture the white chocolate cupcake on my trip next week, too, so stay tuned!
Teresa — Great question! I’m not sure on that one!
marci says
this cupcake looks right up my alley! Does it taste anything like a dulce de leche cake? kinda moist and milky and not too sweet?
Amy Keeton says
This is the best cupcake I have ever had!!!! We got one of these with a remaining snack credit on our last day. We shared it with our kids on the way home in the van — I do not recommend eating it in the vehicle! It was a pure slice of heaven for all of us. It was huge and the four us split it without going in to a sugar coma!! On our next trip, we are already planning on getting lots of these to have during our trip!
AJ says
Marci — Not milky, and definitely sweet! 😉
Amy — Good advice about not eating in the car!! Thanks for the review!
Laura says
we tried this just last week and were disappointed that the cake was very dry. Maybe we just got a bad batch?
AJ says
Laura — Not sure on this one. The cake I tried was fine. Possibly a bad batch. 🙂
