A reader/cast member tipped me off to some new cupcakes being offered over at the Boardwalk Bakery!! While these may change monthly or seasonally, I just had to share ’em with you!
Oreo Bon Bon Cupcake
Likely named after the famous Oreo BonBons at Cape May Cafe‘s evening clam bake, the Oreo Bon Bon cupcake is massive and Mickey-fied!
Interestingly, the Oreo cupcake is a yellow vanilla cake (who’d a thunk it?) with vanilla frosting. A ribbon of Oreo crumbs coats the bottom of the frosting, and two little Oreos make a Mickey Mouse out of the whole thing.
The frosting is a bit light for my taste — closer to that on the Black Forest Cupcake than the Marble Cupcake — but it’s very tasty.
The Oreos stuck into the top were, of course, soggy. I wish they’d stick them in right before boxing up the cupcake, but I get that you need to see the Mickey effect before you purchase as it’s part of the sales strategy… .
Once you cut into the cupcake, though, the true silver lining is revealed. A thick, rich cookies and cream frosting fills the inside of the cupcake! This is the lard-y buttercream we love, my friends!! A great addition to the snack, bringing it from a 5 to an 8 out of 10 on my cupcake scale.
Now, while I did enjoy this cupcake, I was ecstatic over the NEXT one…
Peanut Butter Cupcake
Oh my heavens.
This might go down in the books as my favorite cupcake on property. It might even bump that Butterfinger Cupcake out of the top spot if the frosting continues to be the rich, thick version I tasted during this review. Seriously.
What makes it so good, you ask? The. Frosting. Tastes. Like. Cookie. Dough. No kidding. The peanut butter frosting has the taste and texture of peanut butter cookie dough. It is outstanding.
And inside? The don’t mess around with chocolate frosting, no sir. More peanut butter frosting.
Now, I know there are some of you who don’t like peanut butter. There are even some of you who don’t like chocolate. And if that’s you — my heart breaks for you! And… can I have your cupcake?
Both of these can be purchased with a snack credit. Check out our other favorite Disney cupcakes!
Heather Sievers says
Yes please! AJ, can you take me on a cupcake tour in September? ; )
Nate says
Can you send a box of those peanut butter cupcakes to Oregon, please?
AJ says
Heather — Yes, ma’am! As long as you save me some of those Easter fudge eggs from Candy Palace!
Nate — They’d have to make it past Dallas, and I’m just not sure that would be possible 😉
Janna says
I am all over the peanut butter cupcake! The BB and I could be great friends…
“Lard-y buttercream we love” – priceless!
Marilyn says
I could die a happy woman after eating those beauties!
Shayne says
Thanks a lot, AJ. Now I’m starving and nowhere near Orlando! Since we’ll be staying at Beach Club on our next trip, I’m praying that one or both of these stick around until December. It’s ok to eat dessert for breakfast on vacation, right?
Kelly says
No. You may not have my cupcake.
Sorry, I never learned to share. That looks divine.
Emma Godbold says
So…I’ll take 5 of the Oreo one and 10 of the PB one please AJ….
Can’t believe I have to wait until next year to eat all of these lovely goodies you keep reviewing??!! 😉
Amanda says
I. Love. Peanut Butter Icing.
Can someone FedEx that cupcake to me, please? That has become a must try on my next trip. I have a Kouzzina ADR for August, so I know where I’m stopping for dessert!
MaumeeMom says
“This is the lard-y buttercream we love, my friends!!” Love it! I want one of the oreo cupcakes! Thanks for the reviews and great pictures!
Sara says
How disappointing the Oreo Bon Bon cupcake wasn’t more like it’s Cape May Cafe counterpart! I got a bit excited for that one, but yellow cake? Vanilla frosting? The soggy Oreos, as you said, are pretty much a Mickey-head given, but seems like an odd choice of ingredients for this flavor. The peanut butter cupcake is lovely looking, though!
Kim says
That Peanut butter cupcake is going on my list for my next visit. I love peanut butter!
JenniferSanborn says
I HAVE to try the peanut butter cupcake. It looks devine! 🙂 Thanks for the reviews!!!
Christa says
I had half of the peanut butter cupcake after dinner at the Boardwalk on Friday night…then the other half for breakfast Saturday morning. It was amazing. Before, the red velvet cupcake at Starring Rolls was my favorite. No more! I wish they could ship me a dozen.
Karen says
Those look AMAZING! I can’t wait to try the Oreo one. While the PB one looks delicious as well, I don’t think anything can hold a candle to the Butterfinger cupcake from Starring Rolls in DHS. Not only is it to die for, it’s also included as a dessert on the DDP.
Jo says
I had the Oreo one (for breakfast!) a couple of weeks ago when we were staying at the BoardWalk. Very tasty, although too big!
AJ says
Janna — Yes! Lard-y buttercream!! I haven’t figured out a better way to describe it! 😉
Marilyn — I think I nearly did!
Shayne — I think these are perfect, champion breakfast selections.
Kelly — You must try one.
Emma — I KNOW! I hope everything is still around when you get there. Chances are, though, there will be even more great things to try! Bring your stretchy trousers!
Amanda — Great idea to have this as a dessert after Kouzzina! I’d be more apt to have it after ESPN Club — those desserts are crummy anyway 😉
MaumeeMom — Can’t wait to hear what you think! When’s the next WDW trip for you guys?
Sara — My thoughts exactly. I’d take the PB one any day!
Kim — My treat!
Jennifer — Indeed! It is outstanding.
Christa — I KNOW! Isn’t it amazing how that PB cupcake can supplant your favorites?
Karen — These cupcakes are also on the DDP, so the choice becomes tougher! I didn’t think anything could hold a candle to the Butterfinger cupcake either… but I was wrong 🙂 I loved this!
Jo — Too big?!? Come now! 😉
Ashleigh says
Oh. My. Gosh! Those both look amazing! Adding to my must-try list for next trip!
Chris says
Oh wow! I think I could spend my whole Disney vacation with just one QS meal a day and eating cupcakes the rest of the time! I can just see me going back and forth from Starring Rolls to BW Bakery everyday just to fill my cupcake need!
Christina says
Do you have any recipes you can share on how to make these extraordinary cuppies?
Jamie says
*drooling* And this is why I shouldn’t be reading these articles so late at night!
Jaxfoodiefreak says
I WILL be stopping by on my birthday this month for this!! Lucky me, we’re parking at Boardwalk to take the ferry over to the Swan for a character dinner. Happy Birthday to me!!
JoAnn says
I think I need to take a cupcake tour while at Disney.
Milkayphoto says
They are no longer making the PB cupcake at the Boardwalk Bakery. As if Oct 2012, you can still get the Oreo Bon Bon.
bruce says
how do i get receips for the bon bon cupcakes
Jennifer says
Had the Oreo Bon Bon Cupcake a couple of weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised that the one that I purchased was chocolate cake!! While I am normally a vanilla kind of girl I felt that the chocolate went really well with the cookies and cream filling!! It was YUMMY!! Can’t wait for the Boardwalk Bakery to open in its new home!!!
Jim says
We were just down at the World a few weeks ago and looked everywhere for the PB cupcake, but could not find it. Is it still being made and if so where is it sold? We will be back in April and would love to try it.
