Sarah Holodick is back with a great review from the Tables in Wonderland Indiana Jones dinner! Take it away, Sarah!
Matt and I had the opportunity to attend the Tables in Wonderland “Cairo Dinner Show.” The dinner was held on the set of the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular at Hollywood Studios.
Atmosphere
Upon arrival we were offered boxes of popcorn, bottled water, beer, or a fruity cocktail. I didn’t catch the name of it, but it was pretty weak. We stuck with beer the rest of the night. 😉
We were seated in the audience area for beginning of the show. Audience members were asked to volunteer, and they were sent off to wardrobe. The first scene (the idol scene) of the stunt show was performed. Afterwards, the extras were brought back out, and if you’ve seen the show, you know the drill!
During the “surprise” event, the stage setting parted and revealed the Cairo scene where our tables were set up for dinner.
During our meal, a DJ played modern Middle Eastern music as well as American 80s. A belly dancer entertained diners, and the meal concluded with the Cairo fight scene being performed around our tables. Marion’s truck explosion is VERY warm on the set!
Eats
Let’s move on to the food, along with our review of each item!
First up — the Wild Greens with Sun-Dried Cherry Vinaigrette. The greens were greens, but the vinaigrette was delicious.
Next — the Cucumber and Red Onion Salad. I love simple cucumber and onion salads, and this was no exception. Matt would have liked more red onion, and I agreed. I did think the addition of tomatoes was a plus.
These grilled vegetables were good, and I don’t typically don’t go for squash and zuchinni. It was well-seasoned and well prepared.
This couscous was the Israeli style (larger bead) and was cooked perfectly. The seasonings were balanced and I really enjoyed it. Matt typically isn’t a fan of couscous and he liked it, in part because of the Israeli style.
The Roasted Spiced Lamb Meatballs were the highlight of the meal. I LOVE the spices in items like kefta, and these meatballs were very much like that.
I liked the sauce they were cooked in; the cucumber mint raita (think tzaziki) was a nice addition. But even better was the spicy harissa. I’ll have to buy some to have on hand at home!
Next in line, the Braised Chicken Breast with Roasted Garlic, Paprika, Cumin, and Green Olives. My thoughts? Chicken on a buffet. We all know that doesn’t end well. The chicken was dry and just not very good.
The Moroccan Spiced Seafood Tagine with Shrimp, Scallops, and Crab in Saffron Charmoula was okay at best. I can safely say it was better than the chicken.
The Grilled Flatbreads with Dukkah and Hummus included both flatbread and plain dinner bread. I grabbed some flatbread and hummus. I don’t recall seeing dukkah. The flatbread was soft and the hummus was smooth and creamy. It was as one would expect. It was not bad, but nothing amazing either.
Here’s a wide angle shot of all of the different items we sampled. Lots of interesting, themed items!
Now on to dessert! There were Mocha Éclairs, Baklava, and Citrus Tarts. The éclairs were decent, but not very mocha-y, if at all. Matt hates coffee, and he said he couldn’t taste it.
The baklava had flaky pastry and the chopped nuts were like a soft brittle. It wasn’t overly sweet like some baklava can be.
Finally the Citrus Tarts. These were awesome. Have you ever had an Orange Creamsicle drink from the Sand Bar at the Contemporary? That’s exactly what the cream filling tasted like.
Also considered a dessert — the Fresh Fruit Salad with Mint Yogurt. Yes, the fruit was fresh, but I thought the mint yogurt was a nice pairing with the fruit. Matt tasted it and didn’t mind it.
As for the coffee and tea, we didn’t consume these, but my guess is if you’ve had Disney coffee, you’ve had Disney coffee.
Coffee, Decaffeinated Coffee, and Selection of Teas
Also available for consumption by us lucky Tables in Wonderland attendees — Beer, Wine, and Specialty Drinks. You could choose from Heineken, Corona, Bud Light, and Michelob Ultra. I don’t know which wines were offered, and as for the aforementioned specialty drink, it was weak. It was like watered down OJ and pineapple juice.
Overall
Overall, at $160 per person, we felt the dinner was worth it. We are huge Indiana Jones fans, and being able to have the theater virtually to ourselves and eat on the set was an amazing experience. It may sound expensive, especially for a buffet, but we liked the menu being offered and there was fantastic entertainment provided. We knew we had to attend this event because we just never know if and when it will be offered again!

The show part of the event sounds awesome… the food, not so much. I wish TIW actually served better food for the price. We went to the Movie Ride event in 2010 and the food there was mediocre at best… but it’s Disney… you are paying for the atmosphere… the Red Stag lemonade was worth the price though! 🙂

Is this Dinner Show still offered? This sounds like something my family would love to do on our next trip.
