As of Tuesday May 31, 2011, the Old Mission Tortilla Factory at Disney California Adventure has closed. But hold onto your hats because rumor has it they are replacing it with a Ghirardelli factory, chocolate shop, and soda fountain!
If the current timeline stays the same, guests at DCA will be able to experience all of the delicious Ghirardelli goodness in 2012.
The location will remain, but the exterior will be changed to resemble Ghirardelli’s famous waterfront chocolate factory in San Francisco.
Disney Imagineering plans to expand the current building to the adjoining backstage structure that currently houses DCA’s first aid and lost children complex. This expanded complex will have enough space to allow for a factory tour experience, as well as a chocolate shop and soda fountain (we smell free chocolate… ;-)).
The Ghiradelli experience will be in a prime location because of its proximity to the main entrance to Cars Land, which is due to open in June 2012, and also along DCA’s parade route.
So while you will not be able to get your free bag of birthday tortillas anymore, you can rest assured that you will be able to enjoy some of the best chocolate and ice cream in the world!

Hallelujah! I am sooooo excited about this! SoCal hasn’t had a Ghirardelli Soda Fountain in years (OK, there’s one in San Diego, but I seriously go to Disney World more often than I go to San Diego!). Finally there will be destination dining in California Adventure!

Is it weird that I actually liked the tortilla factory? Of course, I’m not gonna complain about Ghiradelli taking its place:)

I’m so sad about the demise of the Tortilla Tour. I loved the video, Jimmy and the Maseca dog were often highlights of my visit.
I understand that Ghirardelli is more thematically correct for the San Francisco area of DCA (even though Scharfenberger has better chocolate). But I’m still going to miss the Tortilla Tour video. Luckily we’ve taken video of the film and lots of pictures too.

Ghirardelli is one of only 2 places that i have visited on all my trips to WDW .. but a “factory tour” would be nice.. the ice cream sundays are the best…

I am SO excited for this. At the Ghiradelli Square store they hand our their chocolate caramel squares when you walk in. I am however sad to see those warm tortillas go. The flour ones were my favorite.

Carrie — I’m excited, too. But I think those bread bowls are already destination dining. 😉
Deej — The tortilla factory was cool in that way that only disneyland things can be cool. Ghirardelli will def. be more flashy.
Maseca — Oh!! So sad!! I know; it was definitely a cool place to visit. 🙁
Canadians — For real. Can you imagine the SMELLS coming from there?!
Heather — Yep; warm flour tortillas = awesome.

And I am sure that Ghiradelli will be giving away free chocolate also.
AJ says
RS — I hope so!

Yes get rid of healthy tortillas with Chocolate. Now I know where all the chubby people will be at the park.
