So let me tell you a little secret… When we first reported about this cupcake I was SO jealous of everyone who got to try it! It looked either 1.) Amazing, or 2.) Disgusting…and I couldn’t wait to find out which it was!!
This “wow” cupcake was created at Disney’s Pop Century Resort in the Everything Pop Food Court. This food court has long been the home to some truly unique and incredible eats, so I figured this one would likely weigh on the “amazing” side of the coin. 😉
And I was 100% correct!
Pop Century’s King Cupcake
The “King” Cupcake is a tribute to Elvis Presley. This makes sense in a place like Pop Century, which is devoted to celebrating all things pop culture from the 1950’s through the 1990’s.
When I headed inside, I check out the snazzy new digital menus, which featured some new desserts!
But, of course, my eye came to rest on this beauty. I’d been told that they sold out of these quickly, so I’d visited late morning to be sure I got one!
It was just as pretty as I’d expected. For those who aren’t sure what the heck this cupcake is all about, here’s the list of attributes:
- Chocolate Cake
- Peanut Butter Frosting
- Banana Pudding Filling
- Candied Bacon Garnish
- Chocolate Drizzle
These flavors were, of course, the same ones you’d find in Elvis Presley’s favorite sandwich!
As expected, from my very first bite I was wowed. You guys know what a fan I am of peanut butter frosting, and this was perfect. Not so heavy that it’s like slightly diluted fudge, but still substantial enough that it has that “stick to the roof of your mouth” quality you want in a peanut butter frosting.
The banana pudding filling was delicious, but I definitely wanted there to be more of this particular element. I didn’t get nearly as much banana flavor as I would have liked…
And the bacon was a fantastic addition. Candied bacon is all the rage right now, and you can find it several places in Disney World. But I think I enjoy this use the best. It’s definitely not too sweet, and you’ll still get that punch of savory when you take a bite!
Overall, this cupcake was just what I wanted it to be. Clever, unique, and downright delicious. Kudos to the chefs who came up with this, and who keep coming up with interesting items at Pop Century. The resort has a theme that lends itself perfectly to innovative and creative eats, and I just hope they keep on churning them out!
Have you tried the King Cupcake at Pop Century? What are your thoughts about the bacon trend sweeping Disney World?

Where else can you find candied bacon? Is it a brown sugar coating or a maple glaze? How is it candied? Also is it real bacon or bacon bit? Thanks so much can’t wait to try this cupcake!
Prof. Brainard says
The most beautiful phrase in the English language must surely be “filled with banana custard.”
Alan says
I’m not big on sweets but this cupcake spurs my imagination, with a few changes. Make it a white cake, filled with vanilla cream filling, maple cream icing (two thirds less) and plenty of that candied bacon.
Jaia says
@Alan, that sounds delicious!
In regards to the post – I love candied bacon and while I’m unable to eat it in this gorgeous treat, I’d love some tips on where else I can find it on property!!!
JoAnn says
I plan on trying this in November.
Sarah says
Will definitely try this this October! Countdown is on! 😉 mmmmmmmmmmmmm bacon.
Victoria says
My husband and I are going in December and we’ll be staying at Pop Century. I definitely want to try this!! Looks and sounds amazing!!
Lenore says
This sounds almost the same as the Monkey Cupcake found at the Caribbean Beach food court! The only difference is the candied bacon from how it sounds, so if that’s correct I’m sure it is AMAZING. My in-laws are staying there next month so I’ll have to give it a try!
Jayne @ Four Parks, One Day says
Hmmm. I’m on the fence but my husband would jump in with both feet. He still swears the chocolate covered bacon we ate at the state fair was wonderful. I wouldn’t even try it.
If it is candied with a maple glaze, though…that sounds kind of yummy. Still not sure how it meshes with banana, though.
I am a big fan of peanut butter.
I sound so torn…over a cupcake!

AJ,
Because of this story I’m going to walk over the “Generation Gap Bridge” from The Art of Animation to Pop Century for this one thing!
If it has bacon, it has to be great!
Kathy @ House of Hills says
It’s on our list of to-dos on the next trip. We too will be “walking over the Generation Gap Bridge” to try one!!!
AJ says
Jill D — We’ve had candied bacon at several other restaurants including California Grill and Whispering Canyon Cafe. It’s topping both sweet and savory menu items in WDW lately. Not sure if it’s maple or brown sugar, or how it’s candied…but it’s good! It seems to be real bacon.
Prof. Brainard — Ha ha! It was quite good! Wish there had been more!
Alan — That sounds like a great new cupcake for Wilderness Lodge…or the Canada Pavilion if they ever add a counter service spot!
Jaia — Take a look at some of the menus for the table-service restaurants. Candied bacon is popping up on desserts, appetizers, and breakfast items these days!
JoAnn — Let me know what you think!
Sarah — Yay for the countdown! Enjoy!
Victoria — Perfect! Be sure to head over to the food court mid-morning to get one before they sell out.
Lenore — Very cool! I’ll have to check out the Monkey Cupcake on my next visit!
Jayne — Let us know if you give it a try.
Kirsty — Have her get one for me, too! 😉
Mark Hickson — Fantastic! I hope you enjoy it!
Kathy — Great news!
Dee says
Been at Pop all week and haven’t seen one of these cupcakes yet. I will keep searching every day though since it looks so yummy. Guess I need to head over a bit earlier before they sell out 🙂

Rachel says
Omg I will be staying at Pop Century next Tuesday for my 30th birthday vaca please tell me they still have these!!
Rusty says
Any idea of these are still available now (i.e., September 2013)?
Jess says
Unfortunately I did not like this cupcake at all!!! I am huge on cupcakes and sweets in general. I literally had to force myself to eat this so that my husband didnt get agitated that I had him go get in line and spend the money on it lol. I disliked it so much that I just googled it to find out if others disliked it as much as me! I see this was written a year ago or so… Maybe its not what it used to be and that’s why people liked it before?… Yuckkkkk.
