After being closed for several months for the refurbishment of its neighbor, the Fantasyland Theatre, the Troubadour Tavern has reopened with a smaller, but still worth-a-visit menu.

 Atmosphere

With Mickey and the Magical Map opening this week at the Theatre next door, the Troubadour Tavern is back open and ready for guests to grab a snack while they watch the show.

Located in Fantasyland, directly next to the Fantasyland Theatre, Troubadour Tavern is quaint little counter service snack stop.

There is a small area with a few shaded tables for dining if you’re visiting for eats only. If you’re there to see Mickey and the Magical Map, you can bring your food into the theatre.

Eats

The look of the Tavern has not changed, but there is a significant difference in the menu items.  The most obvious change? The baked potatoes did not make a comeback.

Not to worry though, the Disneyland baked potatoes were moved to Harbour Galley during the closure of Troubadour Tavern and they will remain at Harbour Galley. So you can still get your baked potato fix if you need it!

There are currently 4 “main” items on the Troubadour Tavern menu: The Bratwurst Sausage, Pretzel Bites with Cheese Sauce, a Cinnamon Apple Baton, & Apple Slices with Caramel Dipping Sauce.

You can also get a variety of drinks as well as Nestle “Dibs” Ice Cream Bites.

Visiting with a friend, we decided to get one of each menu item (minus the Dibs because Dibs are Dibs… nothing new!) to share. Including two drinks and the use of our Annual Passholder discount, we ordered the Bratwurst, the Pretzel Bites, the Cinnamon Apple Baton and the Sliced Apples with Caramel.  We spent just over $20 and left stuffed and satisfied.

The Bratwurst Sausage comes on a Garlic and Herb Brioche with Hickory Smoked Bacon Sauerkraut.  Yep! There are actually little chunks of bacon in the sauerkraut.

After adding mustard and kraut we were ready to give the pork bratwurst a go.  I am excited to report that the brioche was soft and fresh, and the sausage had a nice little pop to it upon taking a bite.

The meat inside was tender, juicy, and had a great flavor to it.

AND…. I am going to admit that I freestyled with my cheese sauce from the Pretzel Bites. I just couldn’t resist.  Because after all, everything is better with plastic cheese!  I highly recommend you do this too…

The Pretzel Bites with Cheese are the exact ones that are being served over at Disney California Adventure’s Cozy Cone Motel.  Accompanied by a small cup of cheese sauce the only difference is that these are served in a bag instead of a cone!

The Pretzel Bites are served lightly salted and warm, and the batch I had was perfectly soft.

The batch of cheese sauce was also a good one, it was warm, thick, and didn’t have much of a kick to it like some cheese sauces do.  I prefer it more cheesy and less nacho-y, so this was right up my alley.

The Cinnamon Apple Baton was very reminiscent of the new twists that are served over at Maurice’s Treats in the Fantasy Faire area of Disneyland.  Same size, same price, and same look; I’d bet they are made in the same kitchen, too!

The Cinnamon Apple Baton was served warm. It was flaky on the outside, soft on the inside with a ribbon of apple twisted through it.  Sprinkled with cinnamon, the best way for me to describe this lovely treat would be a hand held slice of apple pie (with less filling of course).

I saved the Apple Slices with Caramel Dipping Sauce for last.  Simply put, they were unimpressive and I felt a little duped on this purchase.  It’s not that the apples and caramel were bad in any way, but I actually pictured the apple slices in a little tray with caramel drizzled over them.  So, when I was handed a prepackaged “Ready Pak,” I actually laughed out loud.

It was such a surprise because I thought I was ordering something made on site.  There was no display out.  Maybe I was wishful thinking, but the description led me to believe it was some sort of apple nacho type situation.  When in all actuality, I could grab a pack of these at the local grocery store.  Again, not complaining, just surprised!

The description on the menu board also did not specify that the Caramel Dip was “Low Fat.”  This could be a deal sealer or deal breaker for someone.  I know that some folks don’t like the taste of low fat desserts/sauces but I also know that some people look for low fat options.

I think it would be beneficial to have a sample out to show people what they are actually purchasing.  If you’re craving an apple or want to grab your little one a “healthier” option snack, this would be perfect. But for $3.99, I say save your money and pass on this one.

Overall

I really enjoyed my visit to the Troubadour Tavern.  The menu items were fresh, filling, and affordable. To me, it seems as though the new smaller menu is a perfect way to accommodate guests who are there to watch Mickey and the Magical Map at the Fantasyland Theatre.

The items on the menu are simple to eat, hand held goodness that can be easily consumed while you take in a show.
