Say it ain’t so…
Seriously? My beloved PLASTIC CHEESE (otherwise known as “Hot Cheese Sauce,” but whatever…) will no longer be offered on Disney World Counter Service restaurant condiment bars?!
As much as it pains me to say it, it DOES
look like the rumors are true. At least for now.
We got word of confirmation from DFB readers Michelle Layfield and Disneyfied Ash via twitter early this afternoon that the cheese vats are empty at Cosmic Ray’s and Casey’s. We haven’t double checked yet, but we’re guessing it’s also gone at Pecos Bill’s and other counter-service locations around Walt Disney World.
We did find out, however, that the plastic cheese IS available behind the counter, so you can ask for it. But I’m not sure if that’s a long-term option, or just until the current stock of cheese runs out.
Here’s the deal: you may still see plastic cheese in some spots here and there… for now. But word on the street is, “When it’s gone, it’s gone.” One of our readers was told by a cast member that it was taken away because it was so messy, but other rumors have it connected to the plastic cheese lawsuit that occurred a few years ago.
Maybe the truth will come out at some point, but in the meantime, I’m drowning my sorrows in a side of Vintage Irish Cheese and Bacon Dip over at Cookes of Dublin if you’d like to join me. ;-D
We’ll keep an eye on the situation and let you know if there’s any change. Don’t forget to take a peek at some of our other favorite extinct Disney food here!
We’d love to hear your thoughts on Plastic Cheese! Loved it? Hated it? Let us know in the comments below!

Heartbreaking news. Seriously. 🙁
Julie says
Noooooo- My whole family is already disappointed that they took the cartoons out of the back of Casey’s, now the cheese?!!! We have a trip planned in December, but not sure when we will go back after all these changes:( memories of a much happier place after 20 plus visits will have to sustain me
Bobbie says
Maybe they got tired of ppl calling it plastic cheese so they removed it.
Kristi says
So sad! Bring back the plastic cheese!!! Even if it’s only behind the counters instead of on the bars I’ll be happy.
Emily K says
It is true! So disappointed! I asked at the counter and was told they no longer had it.
Laura says
This is terrible news! It’s one of the things I look forward to at Caseys! Hope they bring it back soon!
Jon says
toppings bars to be are one of the uniquely Disney things, getting a burger in the Magic Kingdom wouldn’t be the same without them! Let’s hope even if the cheese is gone, the sautéed onions don’t follow suit!
Scott says
Humm, behind the counter now? That sounds so much like medication that is controlled at the drugstore. Maybe it’s for the best, I can’t see it being healthy in anyway possible. Having to ask for it at the counter might help guest not use it so easy. Sound like a step in the right direction.
Essie says
I’d like to now what the lawsuit was about. I’m so SICK AND TIRED of people losing things they love and enjoy in life because of greedy lawyers and clients who make suits over issues that usually only happen because of a person’s carelessness and lack of common sense.
Smells says
I think it has something to do with the new federal law regarding trans fat. It is no coincidence the change occurred same week.
Essie says
Sorry for the rant, but this is happening all too often.
Niki says
Noooooooooooooooooo!
Kim says
I ate at Casey’s yesterday cheese is still there
Dana says
Not affected in any way…don’t eat it and won’t miss it. My heart goes out to all who will miss the fake cheese goo, sometimes ya just like something just because ya do!
amy says
Oh my goodness…..we made it in just under the wire….I now doubly relish the memory of plastic cheese all over my last order of fries from cosmic rays two weeks ago. Do you think there were trans fats in it?
Cheryl says
Why is it called plastic cheese?
Pegasus says
Stop calling it “plastic cheese.” It is not plastic. It was made with artificial ingredients. Plastic is not approved for consumption.
Alison C says
Gutted by this news!! One of the things that I look forward to most when I go to WDW is pumping runny cheese all over my fries at Pecos Bills, mmmm! OK, so it’s not healthy – but it tasted delicious!! R.I.P. my plastic cheese =0)
Jon Loftus says
I’m not familiar with the “plastic cheese lawsuit” mentioned. Could someone link a reference?
Valerie says
Nooo!!! I really hope this is only temporary. One of my favorite things is to eat at Pecos Bill’s with my cheese fries and cheesy pickles. Come on Disney, say it isn’t so!
Megan says
I’d guess it has to do with the legislation about completing banning trans fats in foods. While the plastic cheese is crazy delicious and I’ll miss it, I’m not sure it can really be made without the terrible for your health trans fats, and yet still have the same non-congealing liquid consistency.
Lindsay says
We were just at Disney and the cheese was still available at Pecos Bill’s. Thank goodness! I love that stuff. I will be sad to see it go. Love dipping fries in it!
Stella says
Noooooooooooo!!!! Dun Dun DUNNNNN! What will I put on my fries? My hot dogs? Nachos??? What will my condiment bar experience even be? Ketchup and mustard just do not suffice.
Ronda says
Oh, no!! No plastic cheese . . . last trip no peppers . . . was that a fluke, or are the peppers gone, too?
kelly says
I’m sorry, I must disagree. Even though the cheese sauce taste great, it’s really pretty nasty. They should let people make up their own minds about whether to partake or not.
Brian says
Unless there has been a new lawsuit involving plastic cheese, I seriously doubt Disney is reacting to a lawsuit they settled four years ago. Instead, I think the FDAs new rules eliminating trans fats in foods has more to do with this calamity. Most (but not all) “hot cheese sauce” contain 3g of trans fat per serving. Hopefully, Disney is just eliminating the current trans fat-containing product and we’ll all be able to enjoy our plastic cheese again minus the trans fats.
Richard says
OK, try this…
Everyone that likes the stuff (sorry, not me) make a donation and ‘buy’ your own researchers to say there is good trans fat and bad trans fat. Then they can claim the Disney cheese is using the good trans fat!
Remember cholesterol? At first ALL cholesterol was bad and then they discovered there was ‘good’ cholesterol and ‘bad’ cholesterol. Why can’t the same be done for trans far or better yet the cheese it’s self? You know, ‘good’ plastic cheese and ‘bad’ plastic cheese…
Jonny says
Now what am I going to put on my hotdog from Casey’s!?!?I know fake cheese isn’t healthy, but it’s tasty, so I CHOOSE to indulge. No one is forcing me to eat badly. It’s a risk I’m willing to take, just like getting in a car, knowing that some accident could happen and I become injured or killed.
I sure hope some sort of cheese returns to the counter service spots.

Kristin says
So sad that the hot cheese is going. Always looked forward to a burger and cheese fried at Pecos Bill Cafe after the princess half marathon in February. It was my reward for all the running. I’m so sad.
Rob Stevens says
If you check your local grocers, you may be able to find Ghel’s Nacho cheese sauce, which is a very close, if not identical, version.
You can also buy it online. http://www.salsaexpress.com/p-4042-gehls-authentic-stadium-nacho-cheese-sauce.aspx?gclid=CIzngvSBosYCFY9gfgodB00O0w
Ann says
I am mad about the cheese going away. It was our Disney indulgence to make cheese fries. If Disney is so worried about healthy food then they need to get rid of all of the kids meals and revamp those. Your telling me that all of those chicken nuggets and pizza is good for the kids? The topping bar(including the cheese) makes spending $11 on cheeseburger and fries more palatable. I am still mad that they took away the vanilla soft serve swirl for the dole whip. It seems like they just keep taking more things away. Not cool Disney.
Laura says
We love the plastic cheese! My 8 year old son is gonna be so disappointed:(
Kim says
I’d assumed the first few upset posters were joking; upset about cheese you can get at any gas station or in a jar at the grocery. I’m stunned that this is even upsetting people!!!
Teri Dalco says
I wonder if the CA Disney is having to do away with it (by legislation or whatever) so the whole Disney US is doing the same?
bobbie says
I think it’s odd that people are getting so upset over this. There are so many things at Disney to make it special besides the cheese sauce, just find something new to enjoy. I’ve only been to Disney twice, I didn’t even know the cheese sauce was even there. Deep breath ppl
Jim says
The cheese goes so well with burgers and fries and the corn dog nuggets. They have to bring this back!!! What’s next extra magic hours?!?

PLEASE update your page to include the lawsuit. It’s disturbing to see all the idiots fighting on your FB page about this.
John Grigas says
Very sad about this – Pecos Bill’s was our “go-to” for a mid-day snack. The Chili-Cheese Fries hit the spot for us . . . I wonder if they will keep it on the menu and just dispense it in the kitchen?
MegaGlide says
I remember how happy it made me when I discovered it there on the topping bar.
My fries will never be the same.
Sad.
Jess says
Definitely upset to hear this news. The cheese sauce on the condiment bar was the main reason why we ate at places like Pecos or Cosmic Rays. It made the fries and burgers extra special. It was one of those little things that make going to Disney so much fun. Sure its not a big deal if you don’t eat it, but it is upsetting for those of us who enjoyed it and looked forward to getting some cheesy deliciousness. I am well aware that cheese sauce isn’t healthy for me, but it is my choice if I want to eat unhealthy foods. As someone else pointed out, there are lots of unhealthy choices at Disney. It is a vacation destination, after all! I highly doubt this is related to a four year old lawsuit, but is probably more likely related to health or money saving issues. In any event, I really hope they bring it back, but I won’t be holding my breath. I also probably won’t be in any hurry to eat at Pecos or Cosmic Rays again anytime soon.
Galloping Gourmond says
Well, there goes Pecos Bill’s. The fixin’s bar was the only thing that really made that place special. However maybe this will force them to up their game when it comes to their actual offerings, which I’ve always found a little wanting.
Galloping Gourmond says
@Dani – yea that facebook thread is more than a little ridiculous.
Craig & Sam says
Visits to cosmic rays won’t be the same any more.
How can anyone have the Walt Disney World hot dog without the world-famous plastic cheese on.
Tears from the UK
Megaglide says
Probably just more of Disney’s cunning. They’ll deprive us of it for a few years, until we think it is well and truly gone, then bring it back at a location where nobody would otherwise eat.

Maybe this is just temporary? Last October, we were on the Disney Fantasy for a back-to-back cruise. During the first half was when news of a passenger on another cruise line had hidden the fact that she’d been exposed to Ebola. Jump to the first day of our second cruise — all self-serve food and beverage areas onboard were now attended by crew members. Everything, from the embarkation buffets (food and beverage areas), the soda stations on the pool deck, to the bar snack stations at night. By the third day, though, everything was back to self-serve.
Dan says
My guess is that it is more of a maintenance issue than a dietary one.
I remember plastic cheese from when I worked at Six Flags years ago. That cheese sauce becomes like rubber when baked in the hot sun. And people tend to get it all over everything.
Bob says
Another reason the cheese sauce has been removed could be the number of guests that bring a bag of Doritos Scoops to the park and pump gallons of the goop to make their own nachos.
I have seen this done numerous times and if you want cheese sauce you now have to ask for a serving. I am sure they won’t be providing the amount people need to make nachos to feed an army.
