The Disneyland Resort has gone all out for Disneyland’s Diamond Celebration. Special decor, special merchandise, and most importantly, special food!
On a recent visit to Plaza Inn, I noticed an intriguing dessert that I had to try, Diamond Celebration Chocolate Cake. Honestly, I bought this out of curiosity because it sounded like a bizarre mix of flavors to me.
The description alone seemed crazy: Chocolate Cake layered with Passion Fruit, Mango & Banana Mousse, Apricot Compote and smothered with a Milk Chocolate Caramel Ganache and Crunchy Chocolate Pearls. Since I’m not a huge chocolate fan, what actually sold me were all of the tropical fruits involved.
Right away I noticed that the “cake” was really more of a mousse dessert than an actual slice of cake. For me, this was what I was looking for. However, if you’re looking for an actual slice of cake, go with a different choice (their carrot cake is amazing!). Each layer of the Diamond Celebration Chocolate Cake had a different fruity taste to it.
The bottom and top layers are chocolate mousse, that dark center is the chocolate cake, then around the chocolate cake are the fruity layers of banana and mango mousse. The apricot compote is the layer second from the bottom.
The cake is topped with a shiny layer of milk chocolate caramel ganache. You can see the perfectly spaced layers in the photo below. The mix of the tropical fruits with the fluffy mouse was really a wonderful combination. Lots of fruit flavor and just enough chocolate to please chocolate lovers! It’s a really rich dessert, though, perfect for sharing.
The cake is topped off with a gorgeous silver diamond made of white chocolate. It’s most definitely edible, and hollow in case you were wondering. The back of the cake features a little white chocolate square with a blue splatter design on it. I thought that this was a bit random, but it brings in the blue theme from the Diamond Celebration, so no biggie.
Overall I would most definitely recommend the Diamond Celebration Chocolate Cake. It’s a very refreshing combination of flavors.
But you know what I REALLY recommend at the Plaza Inn???? Fried Chicken!
Can’t argue with a classic.

Normally I’m strictly a frosting person, but this does sound intriguing…

On the first day that all the special Diamond Celebration food came out (24 hr Disney day), I HAD TO try this cake. And I must say, it one of the BEST pieces of cake I have ever had. Literally want this for my wedding! Though it is not very “cakey” like you said, it is more of a mouse with a sliver of “cakeyness”, but its OK! It still rocked my mickey socks off!

Isn’t Plaza fried chicken one of the primary food groups?
AJ says
Richard — Yes. Yes it is.

This sounds SO good! I hope I get there again while the diamond celebration is still going on so I can try it! (After my fried chicken, of course)

I had this cake at Boardwalk Pizza in DCA. I liked it. An unusual combination. I didn’t have the White Chocolate Pollock on the end though.
Heather says
Peter – Maybe they ditched that, it’s pretty unnecessary…
