Editor’s Update: Sweet Spells in Hollywood Studios closed in April 2018.
They seem to be popping up a lot these days, folks… and now they’ve made their way to Sweet Spells at Hollywood Studios.
We’re talking about Whoopie Pies!
It used to be the only place you could typically find a Whoopie Pie in Disney World was at Epcot’s Sunshine Seasons in the form of the Red Velvet Whoopie Pie (and at Writer’s Stop, where the carrot cake cookie is, technically, a whoopie pie). A few months ago, though, they started showing up in other spots: first at the Art of Animation Resort’s Landscape of Flavors featuring mini versions like Chocolate and Carrot Cake. And then Everything Pop followed suit with their own unique version, the King Whoopie Pie.
If you’re from the northeast region of the United Sates, then you are likely already quite familiar with Whoopie Pies. But if they’re new to you, Whoopie Pies are cake sandwiches surrounding a filling of frosting or whipped cream. They’re most often made to be handheld snack, but you’re about to see that the Whoopie Pies at Sweet Spells are not exactly made for strolling…
So, grab a fork and knife and join us for a Whoopie Pie feast at Sweet Spells!
Four different varieties of Whoopie Pies have just about taken over a whole shelf of the bakery case.
Current choices are Cookies and Cream, Banana, Orange Cream, and Maple Bacon Whoopie Pies.
These yummy sweets are a bit on the small side, but I have to say I am loving the creativity behind these flavors!
Let’s start with the Banana Whoopie Pie.
The small, circular cakes are vanilla flavored, surrounding a banana creme center that is incredibly rich and bursting with banana flavor.
The finishing touches include more banana filling and some slightly toasted marshmallows (sure, why not?). A bit of chocolate drizzle and a dried banana slice cap off everything.
The Cookies & Cream Whoopie Pie is up next.
The cakes on this one are chocolate, while the center is light and creamy with crushed cookie pieces mixed in (it’s slightly reminiscent of the whipped cookies and cream panna cotta — better known as The Grey Stuff — served at Be Our Guest Restaurant).
Oh, and on top is more of that chocolate drizzle and half of an Oreo cookie.
I LOVED the super rich and chocolatey cake on this one. The whole thing essentially tastes like a big, fluffy Oreo!
Coming in with what may be the strongest “cute” game is the Orange Cream Whoopie Pie.
Like the Banana version, the two cakes on this one are vanilla, and in the middle is an amazing creamy orange center.
Little orange-colored white chocolate shavings cover the dollop of cream on top. And last but not least, you’ll find a mini orange slice!
It’s well-crafted, and made for the citrus lovers out there. Definitely a fun twist for your visit to the Sunshine State!
Finally — and perhaps the most intriguing — we have the Maple Bacon Whoopie Pie!
Once more, vanilla cakes make up the sandwich, while the maple actually comes from the thick layer of maple flavored cream filling. The pieces of candied bacon are generously sized, and I prefer them to the candied bits you’ll find on top of the King Whoopie Pie.
More of those same ingredients make up the top. This one is certainly on the rich side, but it is totally awesome!
And so the Whoopie Pie Party continues! They certainly seem to be gaining popularity in Disney World, and the best part is the opportunity to see so many creative takes on this treat. What are your thoughts on the trend? I’d love to hear it!

I love what Disney is doing with these treats! While the giant Butterfinger cupcake might still be king of the cake desserts, I personally find the Whoopie Pie to be a robust alternative when it comes to flavor options. I don’t know if I’d consider buying a maple bacon or orange cream cupcake. But for some reason, those flavors seem extremely appealing in Whoopie Pie form.

I’ll ignore the fact that they look more like shortcake than whoopie pies 🙂 The maple bacon looks great!

I miss the cupcakes, I still haven’t gotten over the King cupcake at Pop Century. I have tried the new whoopie pies and they are smaller in real life. There is a lot less cake to balance out all the amazing toppings and inside goodness.
Carolyn says
It seems like whoopie pies are starting to replace cupcakes everywhere.

Having had the deconstructed cupcakes at the Cheshire Cat place in MK, I am reluctant to try one of these. I had to toss half of the strawberry “cupcake in a cup” I got because it was just sickeningly sweet. I love the idea of the orange one though.
Just a suggestion: to help us understand size, maybe you could put a plastic fork or a sugar packet next to the item in pictures, so when people say “small” they know approximately how small.

Just had the cookies and cream one. It was relatively large, maybe a little smaller than Disney’s usual cupcake but not by much. I’m not usually a cookies and cream fan but this was AWESOME. the cream part reminded me of the Oreo Bon Bons at the beach club marketplace. Very good desert I’ll probably have again sometime.

They’re nothing like the pies in Penna! I’d try the cookies and cream or banana types, but I hope cupcakes stay around, too.

we had whoopie pies at kringla in norway pav, but they took them away in january:/

I think this is stretching it to call this a whoopie pie. I’m a huge fan of the “Carrot cake cookie.” Now that! is a whoopie pie!!!! As someone mentioned above they look a little more like the cake cups in the magic kingdom. Not to say that I wouldn’t try these, that cookies and cream one is calling to me at the moment!!!

We got the cookies and cream whoppie pie last trip and it was amazing! It really does taste like the grey stuff from BOG so if you couldn’t get a reservation to there, you could just head over to sweet spells! The cake part was great and the decorating was so pretty!
Shannon says
The cookies and cream one is calling me!!! And if it really does taste like the Grey Stuff from BOG I am definitely psyched for it! What are the odds these will still be around in August of this year??
DFB Sarah says
Shannon, the Cookies & Cream Whoopie Pie is a pretty consistent regular on the menu, so hopefully yes!
Brandi says
So excited for the Maple Bacon one…come on August!
