You know we love our cupcakes here at DFB. But when we want a sweet treat, we often find ourselves at Sprinkles. Sprinkles is, like, cupcake heaven. And with amazing options like Cupcake Sundaes and Frosting Shots, the hits keep comin’.
Plus that ice cream sandwich with the cap’n crunch ice cream? Just yes.
But the stars here for me are still the cupcakes. They seem to be kind of love/hate for a lot of people (folks get territorial about their cupcakes), but when I first tried them years and years ago — even with my snobby “NYC Magnolia Cupcakes are the best and that’s all there is to say about that” attitude (which I still have; I’ll own that) — I was impressed. It’s rare that I find a cupcake where I want to eat BOTH the cake AND the frosting (usually for me I just eat the frosting, take one bite of cake, and I’m done). And Sprinkles delivered. So it’s been my second-favorite cupcake consistently since then.
So when I head over there, it’s super hard to choose just one. And you might want to take note: Sprinkles also offers limited-time-only cupcakes to make your decisions even harder! Right now, that specialty option is a Margarita Cupcake. You’re gonna love this one (and not just because there’s a George Clooney connection — although that’s a perfectly acceptable reason to love them).
The Margarita Cupcake is billed as a tequila cupcake with key lime frosting and salt according to the sign at Sprinkles. Buuuuut the cast member working the case told me it’s a Key Lime Cupcake with Key Lime Frosting with a Salt topping and Tequila brushed on top. Whatever. As long as there’s tequila in there, I’m intrigued.
The cake has a very slight Key Lime flavor, and the frosting does as well (it’s a smidgen stronger in the frosting than in the cake but still mild).
The salt on top was not overwhelming and balanced the sweetness of the frosting really well (but y’all know I’m a sweet/salty kinda gal, so keep that in mind). The tequila was not super prominent.
But the Tequila is from Casamigos, which is George Clooney’s tequila company. So, like, if you’ve wanted to drink with George or at least like George, this is a cupcake-y way to do that. And we support you.
The Margarita Cupcake is available at Sprinkles through the month of May (so not for much longer, unfortunately). Get it while you can in both Disney World and Disneyland!

Sprinkles doesn’t look like it has the frosting to cake ratio you would like, AJ!

oh dear. Magnolia overbakes their cakes resulting in tough cupcakes. Sprinkles’s cake:frosting ratio is off. And don’t even talk to me about Baked By Melissa! Those are crumbs who once aspired to be cupcakes but gave up on their dreams!
The best NYC cupcakes are at 2 Little Red Hens and Little Cupcake Bake Shop. 🙂
