Rose gold continues its reign in Walt Disney World
, and this time it’s been partnered up with the official Millennial spirit animal: the unicorn. This time you’ll need to head on over to the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa to try the Rose Gold Unicorn Cupcake at Gasparilla Island Grill!
Gasparilla Island Grill has been home to several tasty and creative desserts over the years, including a lovely Coconut Pot de Creme and cupcakes featuring S’mores, German Chocolate, and Pina Colada flavors! So it’s no wonder that the thoughtful pastry chefs of the Grand have concocted a truly special take on the rose gold trend.
For starters, she’s a beautiful cupcake creation, featuring a transparent wrapper with gold filigree, some rose gold-brushed ears, and a pointed ribbon of chocolate fashioned as a horn.
The unicorn’s hair is a beautiful shade of pink (although not altogether rose gold-y), and it cascades from front to back over a thick layer of fondant-like vanilla frosting.
There’s plenty of that pink mane tumbling down the back of the cupcake.
And in case it has escaped your attention, this pretty lady has been dusted with edible glitter. I mean, what’s a unicorn without some glitter?
Aside from the thicker-than-normal frosting, the cake really sets this cupcake apart from other Disney World cupcakes. Rather than the dense, moist cake we see everywhere else, this cupcake features a rose gold-colored, strawberry sponge cake. And it’s a legitimate sponge — all lightness and height. You can see how the cake is full of air from whipped eggs in the batter.
And while the lighter-than-air sponge is a nice texture, it doesn’t hold up well to the heavy, dense frosting. So maybe knife-and-fork this one. And grab a couple of extra napkins.
But we aren’t hating on the sponge, because when eaten with the filling — a super rich hazelnut-flavored cream cheese! — the sponge was necessarily simple. A dense cake with this dense filling would be too much, even for us lovers of cream cheese everything!
We’re pretty happy to embrace the rose gold trend so long as it results in beautifully crafted, delicious treats like this. So if you’re in the World, monorail yourself over to Gasparilla Island Grill to enjoy this fabulous addition to the rose gold universe!

Just visited the grill and they no longer have the rose gold cupcake 🙁 now they have a butterfly cupcake but the cast member didn’t seem too impressed with it so we didn’t try it

Lynsie — Yep — the rose gold cakes are being phased out and many locations are bringing in those Millennial Pink treats!
