Let’s ALL scream for ICE CREAM at the newly opened Salt & Straw in Disneyland Resort!
You’ll find Salt & Straw in the Downtown Disney District, just waiting to give you the scoop. Salt & Straw is a family-run company started in Portland, Oregon by cousins Kim and Tyler Malek.
And from the beginning, Salt & Straw has made a name for itself by offering unique flavors of handmade, small batch ice cream utilizing local, organic, and sustainable ingredients.
Our Disneyland Correspondent, Heather Sievers (@diningindisney on Instagram), was on the scene for the Ribbon Cutting and Grand Opening today!
And after a little celebration to say “Welcome,” it was time to check out Salt & Straw!
Atmosphere
The scene is set with a cheerful exterior which simultaneously matches a modern look with a classic ice cream parlor vibe.
Due to the popularity of Salt & Straw on the west coast, lines are anticipated!
And the shop has taken care to be prepared. Guests receive information about the ice cream so they can read up on flavors (we’ll take a look at those shortly) to help make their choice and move the line along. Plus, samples are encouraged 🙂 .
Stepping inside, you’ll also see the menu high above the registers.
Decorative elements include ice cream art hanging from the ceiling.
And there’s even more ice cream at the ready in take-home pints.
Above the take-home pints hangs a sign displaying the four flavors on the wall that are permanent to the location: Black Olive Brittle & Goat Cheese, Dandelion Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies & Cream, Sightglass Coffee Cashew Praline, and Freckled Mint TCHO-COLATE Chip. (And after hearing about those, I’m sure you’re curious to see what other flavors are in store! Keep reading, my friends…)
There’s no shortage of sweet stuff anywhere you look!
And if you’d like to remember your visit to Salt & Straw long after you’ve eaten your ice cream, there are ways to do that, too.
How about some ice cream cone socks, for instance 🙂 ?
And, of course, new friends are waiting to scoop up your choice of flavors.
So, now the question is… which will you choose?
Ice Cream!
When you look at the menu at Salt & Straw, you’ll notice flavors far beyond your regular Rocky Road and Chocolate Chip. “Handmade, Deliciously Interesting Ice Cream” is what the location boasts, served in various sizes and with Extras.
And the Disneyland location, in particular, is serving up its own unique menu. You see, Salt & Straw has several west coast locations including their home base in Portland, plus locations in Seattle as well as California shops in San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. (The Downtown Disney location is the first in Orange County.) And the neat thing is that flavors can vary depending on where you visit. The Disneyland menu features some favorite flavors from all the shops. The Orange County Register shared this quote from CEO Kim Malek: “We’ve pulled our top hits from all the cities and we’re putting them together.”
On the list here? Scoops such as Sightglass Coffee Cashew Praline, Salted Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and Black Olive Brittle & Goat Cheese. (Click the menu images to enlarge.)
Honey Lavender makes the list, as well as Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper (which the Food Network has deemed the second best ice cream in the country). And you’ll want to keep an eye out for seasonal options during your visit!
For instance, they’ve “created three spooktacular flavors to thrill you” as Halloween approaches: The Great Candycopia, Mummy’s Pumpkin Spiced Potion, and Creepy Crawly Critters!
Did you check out the description for Creepy Crawly Critters? It includes “dark chocolate covered crickets and coconut toffee-brittle mealworms”!
Heather passed on that option 😉 . So, what did she choose? Here’s her scoop of Roasted Strawberry Coconut.
The Oxnard strawberries are roasted in order to caramelize their sugars, then they are churned together with coconut cream. And, according to Heather, the result is delicious!
Her friend chose the Chocolate Gooey Brownie, which features chewy chocolate brownies made with homemade marshmallow fluff to keep them soft even when inside the cold chocolate ice cream.
And, just a friendly reminder that samples are encouraged!
In addition to the Roasted Strawberry Coconut, Heather also tried the seasonal Mummy’s Pumpkin Spiced Potion (made with autumn spices, dried pumpkin tea, and candied pumpkin bits) and the Freckled Mint TCHO-Colate Chip featuring TCHO ethical craft chocolate which sources beans from fairly paid growers.
Each taste earned a big thumbs up!
Overall
Salt & Straw is so much fun, and a great family-owned addition to the currently transforming Downtown Disney District. With an abundance of truly interesting flavors that you won’t find anywhere else, it will likely take more than one visit to Salt & Straw to try everything you’d like! But you’ve got to get there for the first time to start trying them all, so know that Salt & Straw is open daily at 10:00 AM through midnight. We’ll see you there!
Salt & Straw is one of several new eateries at or coming to Disneyland Resort! Find out more on our DFB YouTube Video!

o m geeeeeeeee! I want to have them all!! Can’t wait! Did the lines move quickly or does sampling really slow it down? i’m worried we won’t be able to squeeze in a visit if the lines are too long. We’re only in DL for 3 days at the end of the month.

We were there today. The line moved very quickly. Didn’t have the courage to try Creepy Critters. Tried the Black Plive and wish I had tried the Honey Strawberry. It was very good!

I am sooo down for the Sea Salt and Caramel Ribbons, Strawberry with Balsamic & Black Pepper, and Black Olive Brittle and Goat Cheese! As a lover of savory/sweet combinations, these sound divine! I’ve tried actual fresh strawberries with balsamic vinegar and black pepper and it’s delish. The goat cheese they use is Humboldt Fog from Cypress Grove which is my favorite goat cheese. Can’t wait!! 😀

Their double fold vanilla is so good – it’s easy to overlook with all the exciting and unique flavors, but it’s divine!
