The time has come! Disney pronounced their dedication to eliminating single-use plastics, including plastic bags, in 2019, and we’re starting to see even more reusable bag options in Disney World and Disneyland — this time specific to the locations where they’re found!
We saw some generic Disney reusable bags when World of Disney re-opened recently. But today in Disneyland we spotted these Disneyland-specific bags.
Bags are $1.00, $1.50, and $2.00 depending on size, and you can see that the bags for each park show attractions in that specific park. On this Disneyland version, you have it’s a small world, Space Mountain, and Star Tours (or, the soon to be found in Disneyland Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge).
And on the Disney California Adventure bag you can see Carthay Circle, Mickey’s Fun Wheel, and Cozy Cone Motel.
DFB readers have also reported location-specific bags in Disney World parks and resorts.
There have been mixed responses to the no-single-use-plastics declaration, which includes eliminating single-use plastic straws, cup lids, and hotel amenities from the parks and resorts. Currently, straws and lids are no longer offered to guests purchasing beverages at counter service locations (straws are often found nearby on condiment counters, but are not given automatically to guests), and we’ve seen some refillable amenities popping up in resort hotel rooms as well.

Bought 1 in at Polynesian in Disney World yesterday. They are cute!
However, we shopped a little, then headed to the airport. It had ripped before I went through TSA.
The standard blue plastic bags made it through the weekend, being reused with no problem.
Definitely not reusable. Not worth $2 for a cute bag for a few hours.
Hope that’s not what they’re trying to replace the plastic bags with.

These are cute. Not sure whether I’d buy one or not, but I do like the California Adventure design.
I will say that on our recent trip to Disney World, I really was a little perturbed at the lack of lids on our drinks. Trying to carry a tray full of drinks without lids through a crowded counter service space like Casey’s Corner felt like a brush with disaster. I wish they would just make the refillable mugs an option in the parks, which would solve the environmental issue and the “I-don’t-want-to-dump-Coke-on-another-guest” issue.

Better yet, what about those of us in a wheelchair?

I am all for sustainability, and I am super proud that Disney is moving into the same direction. I’ve always been a huge Disney fan, but their single-use products and packaging use within their parks and merchandise stores have been a concern for me as I’ve been adopting a low/zero-waste lifestyle. I’d definitely support any of their policies that would improve on environmental impact.
Not to mention that I absolutely love the design of the Disneyland bag!
Sustainable practices is a topic I’d love to see more of on the Disney Food Blog. Would Disney allow things such as filling guests’ reusable cups that they provide to cast members, or allowing guests to package leftovers in reusable containers? Any tips would be great, and I’d be more than interested in seeing a blog or video posts about it.

Did I miss something? After purchasing a retail items, does Disney merely hand the guest the item with a receipt and send them on their way?
Valerie says
I like the idea of the re-usable bags. How will it work for sending your packages back to the room? Will they staple it to death to send rendering the bag unusable as you have to rip it open.
CAROL JOHNSON says
We purchased the large reusable bag last time we were at WDW. I’m fine with that as it does make carrying our purchases easier.
Eliminating straws is okay. I think it is a bit extreme but, really no big deal. However, hopefully they provide straws for drinks that really need a straw such as milkshakes. That could be awkward.
Now, for eliminating drink lids. That is ridiculous. It is just too easy to spill and it never fails with the overpacked parks, someone will bump into you. That Disney needs to reinstate.
CAROL JOHNSON says
We purchased the large reusable bag the last time we were in WDW and will bring on future trips. I find it easier to carry everything in one place. So that works well for us and they are not expensive.
The straws issue is very controversial, yet I’m fine with that as long as they provide straws that require them like milkshakes. It is what it is.
However, not providing drink lids, to me is just plain ridiculous and goes a bit too far. Drinks are tough enough to carry never mind without lids. With the parks usually overcrowded, it is inevitable that you will be bumped into and there goes the drink, clothes and mess on the ground. Disney needs to rethink that decision.

these dont fly with me, you cant close up the bags to keep them closed and getting on and off rides with these are too cumbersome. So are they refusing to give a regular bag now in the shops? Is it buy a bag or else? Things can get taken out of these way too easily. They are not supportive enough for being in a themepark all day, cute and fun yes maybe for car travel and what not or at home but if this becomes the only option in the parks forget it. Just wont shop anymore. They are getting bad about nickel and diming the guest like sea world, its happening everywhere of course but still. Thats how Chapek World is going to be from here on out.

I feel like this is a challenge to all things and all places Disney to keep coming up with new designs of their reusable bags. I love them and I already have something of a collection of bags going. You’re going to need a whole section on shopDisney.com just for bags! One suggestion, though… make the straps and how they’re attached stronger. If we’re going to carry our purchases in them, we want to get them out of the parks intact. In (I think May) 2013, I bought a great Flower and Garden design bag featuring Minnie Mouse on one side and Donald Duck on the other, but after only a few uses, one of the handles tore from the bag, tearing the bag itself as well.
William Wells says
Just curious, when you purchase an item and have it delivered to your room, or hotel it always comes in the plastic bag with you information attached. How will that be handled now?
Lisa says
This is just a way to charge $1 for a bag that was previously free. All these “reusable” bags end up in the trash, too. No way am I packing these and bringing them home in my luggage to “reuse.”
DFB Sarah says
William, as far as we know, they are still using plastic bags for this. If we find out otherwise, we’ll update!
DFB Sarah says
Jeff, at present plastic bags are still available in stores. We haven’t seen their complete removal at this point.
DFB Sarah says
Valerie, as far as I know, we haven’t heard a solution for this yet. As of now, they’re still using plastic.
DFB Sarah says
Joe-King, so far they haven’t completely removed plastic bags, and we’re not sure how it will play out once they “officially” get rid of them. We’ll keep you updated on the blog!

The Unicorn: I’ll share your suggestion with AJ!

Hi everybody – I see we all have strong opinions on this issue. I think we need to all pass our comments on to Disney via email. Since we are their” guest “while we are there ( their paying guest!) , we should have some say about what is convenient for us and what is inconvenient. Whether your guest are in your home, or you’re a paying guest at Disney World, ( which of course cost a bunch of money!) you should want to make your guests comfortable. No lids for the cups? Really Disney? The straw thing is bad enough and now you have to buy a bag with your purchase? I plan to email Disney and let them know exactly how I feel! I encourage everyone else to do the same. We are paying far more at Disney these days than ever. Parking fees, food increases, and ticket increases. However, we are getting less and less for our money. I think the least they can do is give you a lid for your cup!
