If you’re assimilating into the world of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and its village, Black Spire Outpost, you’re going to need a mechanical sidekick. And there’s a Droid Depot for that!
Droid Depot is an industrial workshop with a collection of droid parts — and visitors can select from those parts to customize a droid of their very own! If you aren’t looking to customize and just want to pick a droid friend from a selection of premade droids, there are options for you as well.
Creating your Droid
You’ll have to decide if you want to build a droid from the BB-series (think BB-8-style) or from the R-series (like R2-D2). The depot’s clerk will hand you a blueprint and a basket before you move on to the Parts Station.
Here you’ll select parts from a conveyor belt laden with miscellaneous parts. Use your blueprint to get one of everything you need. For the BB-series, you’ll need a dome, dome connection plate, body sphere, and motivator. For the R-series, select a body, dome, center leg, and a pair of side-legs.
Once you’ve collected the parts required to build your droid, move onto the Build Station, and use your blueprints and “placemat” instructions to assemble your droid. (Note: Droid builders will only be allowed to bring one other person with them into the build experience, and one of the two must be 14 or older.)
When your droid is assembled, a depot clerk will pair your droid with a remote control, and you and your new sidekick will be released into Black Spire Outpost.
Bluetooth Technology
But the fun doesn’t stop there. Your astromech droid will use Bluetooth technology to interact with other droids and with the land itself. That’s right: your droid will be able to respond to and be triggered by things in the environment of Black Spire Outpost, making this purchase ($99.99 for a droid and its carry case!) part of the immersive experience of Galaxy’s Edge.
Customization
And if you want to add even more to your droid, the Droid Depot also offers optional customization for an additional cost. So your droid will be all yours — from nuts to bolts.
Additional Merchandise
And if you want to show Black Spire Outpost just how much you love your droid (or droids in general!), you have to see the other merchandise you’ll find when visiting Droid Depot!
If you love R2, then you’ll likely be in love with the R2-D2 Headband. We were surprised by the quality and detail.
Even the back has R2’s little gizmos and gadgets!
And believe it or not, your R2 headband comes to life!
That’s right: pop in some batteries, and your headband will beep and light up! It takes a couple of batteries, but they’re included.
If you’re into the newer model, you can pick up a BB-8 headband too! Both droid headbands cost $29.99.
If you’d prefer some new wardrobe pieces that don’t talk back, try one of these Droid Depot shirts on for size!
There are also plenty of figurines, key chains, and puzzles for your shopping pleasure.
And a bag to keep it all in!
Don’t forget to top it all off with a baseball cap 😉
If you’re looking for some droid help in the kitchen, you can take home one of these (really awesome!) R2-D2 bowls!
There’s plenty of other kitchen-ware as well, including plates, tongs, oven mitts, and tea towels featuring everyone’s favorite droid.
Don’t forget the mug to round out your collection!
Droid fans can also pick up jewelry…
…and pins and decals.
And if you’d prefer not to build your own droid, you can pick up your very own C-3PO, R2-D2 or DJ-RX3 — the famous Cantina DJ Droid!
These certainly ARE the droids you’re looking for. Roger, roger!
PDH says
June 3rd is our date. I’m getting an R5 unit with a Smuggler’s personality chip and a blaster. Not sure of the colors. Maybe black and silver. This all looks freaking amazing and I can’t wait!! Of course, I’ll be buying much more than that. I’ll need a wookie to carry it all to my car.
DFB Sarah says
PDH, have a great time!
Don says
What is the cost on the droid backpack?
DFB Sarah says
Don, the backpack is $39.99.
Jorge says
We want to pair our astrotech droid, where is located the pair button on the droid?
DFB Sarah says
Jorge, AJ says it’s on the bottom by the switch.
Katey Cook says
Jorge and Sarah, i bought a packaged r2d2 but cant get it to sync up with the controller. how did you do it?
DFB Sarah says
Sorry, Katey, I’m not 100% sure. I saw in a video that you can pair the custom built ones by pressing a button on the top of the remote. There may also be a pairing button on the bottom of the droid. Sorry I can’t be more specific, but I hope this helps!
James M says
Is there any way to order a droid online? I don’t think I can make it to the park anytime soon.
DFB Sarah says
James, there are R2-D2 and BB-8 droids on ShopDisney, but there’s no option to build your own online.
Bethani says
Do you by any chance know the averageish weight of the droids. I was trying to figure out of it was going to weight our luggage down too much!
Thanks so much in advance!!
Victor Rodriguez says
We landed at Baku on June 25th and it is totally worth the hype. We also walked away with 3 droids and a boatload of accessories. You need to go there.
Dawn says
How big are the $100 R and BB droids (i.e. dimensions)? I am trying to figure out if two will fit in a carryon bag, which is only allowed to be 9″ deep, or do I need to plan on having a checked bag to get them home?
DFB Sarah says
Dawn, they’re just over a foot tall. They’re about nine inches in diameter, so they’ll be cutting it close for the carry-on bag. You could carry one on in the carry box and try to fit the second into the luggage, if they don’t both fit. If I can get some specifics, I’ll update you!.
Lee says
Anyone know the weight of the droid? Looking to find out if they are too heavy to go in checked bags.
Dawn says
Thanks Sarah, any more info you can find would be great! Each kid has been saving up to build one, getting them home was the only concern! One wants to build a BB and the other wants to build an R unit, and I’m just trying to make sure we’ll be able to get them home safely!
Matthew Godfrey says
Just got back to Australia and while there built my R2 unit but tge6y ran out of SD personality cards…. disecany one know where I can get one from…..

DFB Sarah says
Dawn, AJ built a R-Series droid, and the body of hers is about 8″ in diameter. If your luggage is 9″ deep, you should be fine for two droids in the carry-on. They’ll come in their carry boxes, which are handy for transporting them, though, if your kiddos want to carry them on. Whatever you decide, I hope you all have a great time. And high five to your kids for saving their money to build their droids! Very cool!
Droid Mom says
Hi! Can someone give me the rough dimensions of the BB droids? What about the dimensions of the droid backpack? I want to bring my backpack in case the droid ones are sold out. Thanks!
DFB Sarah says
Droid Mom, the BB-series droids are about ten inches tall and seven inches in diameter at their largest points. You could also disassemble the large part of the droid and stack the halves if you need to make it smaller for your pack.
Toni Nolan says
DFB Sarah, I clicked on your link to buy ready-made Droids online and it said No Results Found. Could they have discontinued selling them in the online store?
DFB Sarah says
Toni, it looks like they’re not available online anymore. Bummer!
Mandy says
Hi DFB!! Can you tell me how strict driod depot is on the builder plus one rule? My son is building a driod I’m just wondering if both my husband and myself can go in with him. He is turning 9 while we are on our disney vacation and we wanted to surprise him with letting him build a driod.
DFB Sarah says
Mandy, that’s a tough one. I’ve read that Disneyland Resort has allowed young children (like 3 and under) in with both parents, but I haven’t heard anything about kids who are older. It’s worth talking to the cast member when you check in, perhaps explaining that it’s his birthday soon/recently, and see if they’ll make an exception (you might get some Disney magic). If not, Droid Depot is also part store, and any guests can go inside Droid Depot to shop, so you could potentially still be close even if one of you can’t be in the build area. Good luck; I hope it works out for you! And have a fabulous birthday trip with your kiddo!
SarahP says
Are the initial batteries included? Or should we bring some with us?
DFB Sarah says
SarahP, batteries included!
Charlotte says
Do you know the dimentions for the controller (and about how far the buttons are from the edge?)? I want to make a my own backpack with a slot for the controller on the strap so I can make her beep and boop without having to fish around inside.
William Henderson says
Is the backpack durable enough to be used as an actual backpack when not carrying a droid? Could a child use it for school for example? Thanks!
Bryan Pender says
Do you need an appointment prior to getting there? To Build a droid?
DFB Sarah says
Bryan, typically you do not need a reservation for Droid Depot, but reservations are possible and would help in ensuring you can do the experience, even if it’s busy.
Maxwell Butikofer says
Hi ummm how expensive are the droids?
DFB Sarah says
Maxwell, the droids you build at Droid Depot are about $100.
Peter Lisker says
I have two and they do “talk” to each other! Check out this excellent Youtube video on how the droids “react” in Galaxy’s Edge and how you can duplicate at home. Galaxy’s Edge Droid Bluetooth Signals Explained – Making droids react at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liKQ0LrN9q0
