WELCOME to Savi’s Workshop — Handbuilt Lightsabers in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge!! Actually, we should probably be a little less enthusiastic, as this spot is a guarded secret from the First Order. So, it’s best to keep things quiet. Understood? Great. Then let’s proceed…
When visiting Black Spire Outpost, you may just happen upon Savi’s scrapyard. Turns out, this is no ordinary scrapyard. It merely provides a front as a salvage business to disguise the true purpose of Savi’s Workshop.
Do you sense the Force guiding you here? Then you may want to visit the Gatherers. These men and women — “keepers of the Force” — are dedicated to restoring balance in the galaxy. They do so by sharing their knowledge of both the Force and the ancient ways of the Jedi. You see, Savi himself was one of the original Gatherers. And it’s in this hidden space where a Gatherer can guide you in constructing a customized lightsaber that’s all your own.
But first, you have to find the secret symbol to identify Savi’s workshop. You’ll recognize it when you see this blue banner with what might be a stylized lightsaber.
Next, tell the Gatherer the secret password. And NOW… it’s time to begin the process of entering Savi’s Workshop.
Logistics
Your customized lightsaber costs $249.99 and includes a carry case. Additional customization is available at Dok-Ondar’ Antiquities. When you pay for your lightsaber outside the shop, you’ll also be given a card with your group number. (The info on your card is written in Aurebesh, but while you’re waiting, use your Datapad to translate. This card says “Savi’s Workshop” on the top and “Group 7” in the center!)
You’ll also select your themed lightsaber hilt.
Lightsaber themes include:
Peace and Justice: Materials include recovered scraps of fallen Jedi temples and starships to create a Republic-era lightsaber. Simple designs are favored to honor the commitment of the devout life of the Jedi Order, who served as guardians of peace and justice throughout the galaxy.
Elemental Nature: “The Force is an energy field created by all living things; it surrounds us, penetrates us and binds the galaxy together.” Materials “born from the Force” — which include bits of Brylark trees, Cartusion whale bones, and Rancor teeth among the options — are used to construct these unique lightsabers.
Protection and Defense: These earliest of lightsaber materials include hilt pieces etched with mysterious script meant to connect the lightsaber holder with “the ancient wellspring of the Force.”
Power and Control: Materials are said to come from the rumored Sith homeworld and their abandoned temples to construct a lightsaber like those who chose the dark side. The designs are sharp in order to represent the brutality of the Sith and their dark desire to control the galaxy.
The theme you select will determine the options you have for parts when building your lightsaber. You’ll receive a tray of parts when you enter the experience. On the tray will be two options per hilt part.
Once you’ve selected your theme, you’ll receive a card that indicates which theme you selected. You’ll hand that to a Gatherer when you enter the experience. We went with Elemental Nature. You can have some fun translating this, too!
You’ll also receive a pin representing your theme. This pin is yours to keep, and wearing it through Batuu is a badge of pride. 😉
Then, you’ll wait. Possibly a long, long time. When your group number is called, you (and a +1, if you choose) will be moved into a holding area and be next to enter the shop.
Once inside, you’ll proceed through the selection and building process! No more than 14 people will be allowed into the shop at a time, and we saw about three groups entering per hour. And note that unless you pay for a lightsaber, you won’t be allowed into Savi’s Workshop.
Inside Savi’s Workshop
Savi’s workshop is filled with all manner of parts and pieces and memorabilia from across the galaxy.
Collection bins and transport pods for transporting scrap metal across the galaxy…
Trinkets, tools, weapons, and… of course, scrap metal from the far reaches of the galaxy…
Protective wear that the Gatherers use when cleaning or sculpting the scrap pieces to prepare them for their reincarnation into a lightsaber hilt…
Saber pieces, kyber crystals, and, of course, tales of the Force and the Jedi provide the tools you need. In the center of the workshop is the Builder’s Table. Fourteen builders at a time can gather ’round to begin the process of creating their very own lightsaber.
Cast members explain the process of building a lightsaber and walk builders through the entire process.
Each builder has a station at the Builders Table. The station has a resting place for the Kyber Crystal the builder selects and a place to rest a hilt or completed lightsaber.
With lots of pomp and circumstance (cool lighting, serious atmosphere, etc), the Gatherer explains the history of lightsabers and the characters who owned them. Then it’s time to choose your kyber crystal! Are you BLUE like Luke Skywalker and Obi-wan? Green like Yoda? Purple like Mace? Or Red like the powerful Sith warriors?
The Savi Workshop instructor will highlight the strengths of each kyber crystal. They are not innately good or evil, but have strengths and gifts that could be exploited for the light or dark side of the Force. However, when a Force-wielder turns to the dark side, the act of bending the crystal to their will results in a red crystal and red saber.
Lightsabers channel their energy from a kyber crystal, which a Jedi finds. A Jedi must use the Force to guide them through the selection process, and once a connection is formed, that’s when the crystal turns blue, green, or purple.
When you feel the Force guide you to your crystal, you can select from the tube of salvaged kyber crystals the Gatherers present.
You’ll place your Kyber Crystal on your station as you proceed through the building process.
Once your kyber crystal — which powers your lightsaber (not really…but in Star Wars Land) — is chosen, it’s time to start building! Your tray of metal parts is delivered to you…
…and construction begins! Gatherers will walk through the group and help.
You will select your hilt pieces from the selection provided, and the Gatherers are there to offer assistance, as needed.
Builders start with a cylindrical base that’s powered by Kyber Crystal.
Each kyber crystal, no matter which you chose, clicks snuggly into place in the base.
And the whole build process takes about 10 minutes.
You can mix and match pieces as you decide what your hilt will look like. First, to protect your Kyber Crystal, select one of two pairs that join via powerful magnet to enclose the crystal.
Then, mix and match hilt parts until you’ve got a combination you love (perhaps one combination of parts will help you feel the Force more strongly…).
The variety of hilt options means that the saber you build will be unique and customized to your preferences.
Your completed hilt can rest while you wait to attach its blade. You can see the parts we didn’t select are arranged in the tray.
Once you’ve got your saber built, it’s time for the next big reveal! Builders place their sabers in a special chamber to activate the kyber crystals…
The kyber crystals will imbue the hilt with their energy and connection from you to create one unified lightsaber.
…and then this happens! All the lightsabers activate together for a really cool effect!
The final product is a customized lightsaber!
You can examine your completed lightsaber and see the grand reveal for your fellow Force-sensitive peers.
Lights are dimmed so that builders can test the luminosity of their lightsabers. This… is really cool.
Then, there’s a final goodbye, builders are given a canvas sheath for their saber that they can sling around their backs (note that your lightsaber does not fold down to fit into your suitcase unless you take it apart yourself), and builders are ushered outside through a different door.
Completed hilts weigh between 2-3 pounds and are comprised primarily of brushed metal. Blades contain LED lights. A battery pack is fitted into the end of the hilt, accessible by removing the end cap.
And that’s how Savi’s Workshop — Handbuilt Lightsabers allows visitors to Black Spire Outpost an opportunity to assemble their very own lightsabers, thus participating in an age-old tradition known only in the Star Wars universe! The experience around the Builder’s Table takes about 20-30 minutes, so plan accordingly! And don’t forget: if you must build your own lightsaber, plan to head straight to Savi’s when your visit begins; lines have been very long during previews.
And remember — the cost on your saber is at least $219.99. That’s steep. But if you’re a dyed-in-the-wool Star Wars fan…maybe it’s worth it.
Savi’s is an engaging and powerful ceremony for Star Wars fans, and the opportunity to become one with the Force is particularly meaningful in Black Spire Outpost. We expect Savi’s Workshop will be a popular location for a long, long time.

Dawn E says
Do they make the power on noise??
Andrew says
So is that a plastic tube? I can’t imagine it’s glass… Is it what, about 30” long? That seems like it’ll be a hassle to carry around… and even potentially fly home with…
But it does look insanely cool; initially I thought “$200, totally skipping that!” and now seeing the pictures… I feel myself already caving and wanting to do it…
Does it just turn on as a solid beam, or does it appear to “ignite” from the base upward?
Lisa R says
Andrew, I totally agree. At first I said no way, but now that I see the photos……..
Brian Cook says
From what I’ve seen watching a few videos the perspex tube is detachable and it lights up properly from the bottom to the top.
I plan on getting mine posted back to my home address by the hotel, no way would I risk flying with it.
I’m interested if this will be a fast pass bookable or part of some sort of tour? I’m keen to know as I don’t want to spend hours and hours queuing for this when I want to see the rest of the new land.
Liz says
Any idea if they’ll still offer the “regular” build your own lightsabers that’s currently in the gift shop where you leave Star Tours? It’s a little more kid friendly with pricing.
DFB Sarah says
Andrew, the blade itself is 31″, then the hilt is another several inches (depends somewhat on the pieces you select). The blade is detachable from the hilt, so could potentially fit into a large piece of luggage (maybe at an angle). See DFB Twitter for info from TSA about carrying onto a plane. As for the ignition… it ignites from the hilt outward very subtly. But there’s a cool sound effect! 🙂
DFB Sarah says
Dawn: yes!
JediMasterDerek says
Do you know discounts apply? Like DVC?
DFB Sarah says
JediMasterDerek, Disney is not applying any discounts on the Build Your Own Lightsaber or Droid experience.
DFB Sarah says
Liz, so far yes. We’ll have to watch to see what happens.
DFB Sarah says
Brian, no word on the Fastpass or tour question. We’ll update if Disney decides to do this!
Stephanie says
How does finding the password work? Is it something from within the Disneyland app, Play app, or the park itself? I’m a planner just want to cut to the chase! Haha
Lena says
We’re going next week for my daughters 11th birthday. We are HUGE Star Wars fans. My husband and I will be purchasing her one, but we have our 4 year old with us. We both really want to share this experience with her, so I think it’s pretty unfair that we can’t all go in? I mean, this is Disneyland. Were the imagineers not aware that we have to take our younger kids with us , too?
Emily says
Hello.
I would like to totally build a lightsaber when we go to Disney in July BUT i’m just wonderin, how do i get it back home?
we will be flying and i’m tryna figure out how to get it back home with me!
I figured SOMEONE else has to be wondering this too!
Thank you!
DFB Sarah says
Emily, we’ve had several people ask this. The blade and the hilt separate, with the blade being 31″ long. This might fit in some luggage diagonally. DFB Twitter also reached out to TSA, who said lightsabers CAN go through security, BUT some airlines will have size restrictions for overhead bins. Also, FYI, you do get a carry bag that fits cross body and rests across the bag (samurai style, some have described it).
Larry says
I like the Sith hilt but my color of choice is green. Think anyone would really care?
DFB Sarah says
Larry, I think there would be folks who noticed, but most wouldn’t — and as long as you’re happy, go for it!
Adam says
Can you ship this home the way you can ship purchases from normal gift shops?
Katharine says
Do you know if it’s possible to switch the parts from one lighsaber theme onto another? For example, if I bought a Peace and Justice and a Power and Control saber, would it be possible to mix and match parts of hte two and create and PJ/PC combo saber?
Brian says
Just out of curiosity, if an individual owned two (i.e. Elemental Nature and Power and Control) lightsaber, is it possible to interchange pieces between the two different sets?
Brian says
Can you mix and match pieces from different catagories (i.e. Elemental Nature and Power & Protection) if you were to build two lightsabers?
DFB Sarah says
Brian, it is my understanding that you can, yes.
DFB Sarah says
Katharine, I believe so, yes!
Angie says
Does anyone have the step by step instructions on how to replace the batteries? We don’t have the tag instructions anymore.
Also, to help others….when we flew home, we put the heavy handle portion in checked luggage and the light tube with us in an overhead bin diagonally with carry on luggage.
DFB Sarah says
Angie, I’ve seen YouTube videos that showed the battery pack in the base of the hilt. I believe the bottom piece unscrews, and the cylindrical battery pack is in there.
Luke says
Ok, so I built one yesterday and will try to answer most questions.
The tubes are a plastic type build, but suppose to be combat ready.
They light from bottom to top and turn off from top to bottom
There are 31 inch blades and 26 inch blade you can purchase from the shop
They still sell the Force FX lightsabers as well in the shops, not in the experience
You cannot mix and match in the experience, but if you owned two types you can at home, they are universal.
They can fly home with you but count as your carry on (Most Airlines)
If you book your reservation the day of from within the app, you don’t need password, etc.
These things are metal except the part that everything screws onto and where you put the crystal. that is plastic.
Battery compartment is removed from the bottom and takes 3 AAA batteries.
There are Legacy Sabers also sold in the shop, but not part of experience.
The blades cost $45 for the 26 in and $50 for the 31 in.
The colors you can choose in the build are Green, Red, Blue, Violet, and I believe white. Other colors are sold in shop.
The experience of building this was amazing. Totally worth $200, my only disappointment was they were totally sold out of Kyber Crystals yesterday so I could not buy other colors to change the color of my blade. They only had Red crystals, but refused to sell them unless you bought a Holocron.
If you can spare the money, they are completely worth the money. They have a great feel to them, solid and sturdy. They don’t feel like a toy.
Glenda says
Can you please confirm the blade length of 31″ does that include the black end section that clips into the hilt? Just looking at luggage options and I’ve read different reports on size, some say 36″, some say 34″, 31″ would make packing so much easier!
DFB Sarah says
Glenda, Disney has specified a 31″ blade, but you’re right that the part that goes inside the hilt adds some inches. It looks like the total length is 34″.
Berkie says
Hi
– thank you so much for the detailed coverage.
2 questions:
1. Do you know if I can use the blade from the workshop with a legacy hilt that i can buy at the Dok-Ondar shop?
2. does the case you receive really protect the blade or should I but the extra padded one from the shop?
for those traveling with it – i did some research and decided to bring a plastic poster tube with me so i can carry the blade with me – just a thought in case it helps someone.
DFB Sarah says
Berkie, great tip to protect the blade when traveling! Yes, the blades fit the Legacy Hilts, we’ve been told. As for how protective the bag is, it has some padding, but it’s not the best quality bag. If you search on YouTube, you’ll likely find a review of the bag (try searching Savi’s Lightsaber Bag) to give you a clearer view of what you’ll receive.
Rachel says
Can you confirm if Disney will ship these after building or from the resort?
Nic says
What the… Why are the Aurebesh letters backwards on the cards showing the lightsaber types? Also, that’s group D, not group 7. ?
DFB Sarah says
Nic, it does appear Disney took some liberties with Aurebesh in Black Spire Outpost.
Jill Hanson-Follingstad says
Hello! Thank you for the great information! We have a reservation for mid-October for Savi’s Workshop at 7:10 pm, and were able to get a reservation at Oga’s Cantina at 7:55 pm. Will we have enough time to go through the workshop experience? Just wondering if I should cancel Oga’s. We’d like to be able to do both experiences.
DFB Sarah says
Jill, Savi’s takes about 20 minutes, so it sounds like you should be fine.
DFB Sarah says
Jill, Savi’s takes about 20 minutes, so it sounds like you’ll be fine!
Gaby says
What do you do if your lightsaber breaks?
I have one , TOTALLY loved the experience, but what should I do if it ever breaks?
DFB Sarah says
Gaby, you could try calling Disney directly. I’m not sure what, if anything, they would do for you.
Dorothy F. Marsil says
My son’s hilt is not working since we got it home. We need to send it back for repair. How do we do that?
DFB Sarah says
Dorothy, you’ll want to try contacting Disney directly. You can find numbers here. The Kyber Crystal has to be perfectly aligned. Has he tried moving that around to see if it kicks in?
Gaby says
Hey Update for those who need to see this. This experience is amazing. If your lightsaber breaks bring it back to Savis and they fix it no questions asked 🙂
Casey says
DFB can you please give us information on shipping from Savi’s Workshop directly? Also, can you clarify how much time we should allow for waiting for our session combined with the 20-30 minute experience? We have reservations for both Savi’s Workshop and The Droid Depot and want to confirm we have enough time to experience and finish one before getting to the other. Many Thanks!
DFB Sarah says
Hi, Casey! No one on our team has shipped their lightsaber, so we can’t say from first-hand experience. What I was able to glean online is that you are able to ship it, and you’ll find shipping options at Droid Depot or Dok Ondar’s Den of Antiquities. I’ve seen various prices in different accounts, though, so I can’t comment on pricing at all. How long you’ll wait for your session depends on how many groups are ahead of you, so the number of groups times 20-30 minutes would be a good approximate guess. You can check with the cast members when you check in, too, so you’ll have a more accurate idea. Have a great time!
Jay S. Willis says
I probably overlooked it, but how do you reserve a time for the Savi’s Workshop experience?
Charlie C. says
so heres a question. can i connect 2 blades from the bottoms of each individual blade to form a double bladed lightsaber? all i can see is single blades. and those are only so fun. (curved hilt sabers being whats actually fun about the single bladed sabers)
DFB Sarah says
Charlie, unless you buy a double-bladed hilt, I don’t believe you can. The hilts/chassis from Savi’s are only designed for the blade to go in and connect one way. But Dok-Ondar’s has at least one double-sided legacy hilt.
DFB Sarah says
Jay, you can find info about reserving a time at Disney World here and at Disneyland here.
Tanner says
How does payment work? Do you pay after the experience ? And do you have to pay in cash or does Credit card work as well?
DFB Sarah says
Tanner, “payment is due upon arrival”. In fact, you won’t gain entrance to the experience unless you’ve paid for your lightsaber already. Credit card is accepted.
Nancy Sorangelo says
Good morning after speaking with Walt Disney world Reservations on more than one occasion other than the price I was advised that there is glass in the light saber which makes it extremely heavy and more of a showpiece rather than a toy… I have two boys 12 and 15 Is the glass part of the light saber true and if so it must been way more than 2 pounds please advise.
Thank you in advance ,
Nancy
