, which opened on May 31st in Disneyland, is a completely immersive land. As such, it’s only natural for guests to want to immerse themselves likewise in every way — including with the garments they choose to wear to the planet Batuu!
Disney has clarified the Disneyland park costume policy specifically in regards to Galaxy’s Edge. The information is complete with pictures which Disney has provided to give better ideas of what is — and is not — permitted in regards to attire in Black Spire Outpost.
Disney states that: “While costumes may not be worn by guests 14 years of age or older, appropriate bounding—dressing in outfits inspired by Star Wars—is permitted. The following guidelines will help you arrive to Batuu in style. Proper footwear must be worn.”
“Bounding” refers to combining regular clothing items in such a way that, when worn together, are recognizable as a tribute to a character.
“Batuuan attire” refers to “wearing outfits inspired by the villagers of Batuu—muted tones, vests, layers, etc.”
Items that are NOT permitted include, per Disney, the following:
- All robes or military-style attire
- Masks, face paint, elaborate headwear, blasters or holsters (lightsabers are allowed) or hard items such as body armor, helmets or kneepads
- Full character suits
It is further clarified that this means that some of the items sold in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge — such as the Jedi robes you’ll find at Black Spire Outfitters — cannot be worn in the land.
What will you be wearing to Batuu?

I feel like enforcing these rules is going to turn into a big mess… pictures 1 & 3 of what’s “acceptable” basically looks exactly like what they describe guests aren’t allowed to wear. There are going to be a lot of people confused and disappointed.
Sarah says
I agree the pictures made it about as clear as mud regarding what’s allowed. To me, everything but the second picture in the first group look like costumes. I guess as long as the outfits aren’t official-looking it’s okay? Even though the people in the “acceptable” photos could still be mistaken for cast members as they look similar?
Brandie says
I do find it rather strange that there are items they sell in the park that you cannot wear in the park. I mean, some adults would have a hard time understanding that concept. But try explaining that to a young teenager who just really wants to wear his robe around galaxy’s edge.
Scornie says
Its like not allowing people at Universal to wear their Harry Potter robes…. why would you not be able to wear a Jedi robe??
Liz says
I’m wondering about the Rey staff they sell at Hollywood Studios. Can my daughter wear that?
Adeline says
Yeah I’m thrown off as to why they sell items for adults that you cannot wear in the park. The pictures are confusing. 3/4 of the “accepted” look loosely like cast costumes to me. The droid ones are pretty obvious but still. I really hope that they clarify more soon and allow items bought at the park to be worn. Like someone else said, this is like going to universal and not being able to wear your wizard robe…
DFB Sarah says
Liz, Disney Parks policy typically allows kids under 14 to dress in costumes. If that applies, she should be fine.

I don’t think they enforce very stringently. When we were there a few weeks ago, there was an entire family dressed to the hilt – robes and everything, hoods even up over heads. They walked past plenty of CM, and no one said anything. It appeared that I was the only one there who was aware of their costume rules.

Hello, I just came back from Galaxys Edge and me and my husband wore our sith outfit with our lightsaber on our belt, a lot of ppl just stopped us and told us we looked great, i think the costumes really added to my own experience there, one person stopped me and asked wear the bathroom was but immediately saw my magicband, and shopping bags and said sorry. The young lady told me at the counter that they are really strict on the masks. I fully enjoyed my trip to batuu
Melissa in MO says
I am trying to get my husband to do a cross bounding with me as Mr and Mrs Thurston Howell III from Tatooine. Similar clothes as Luke’s aunt and uncle, but with the hats you would expect from the very rich castaways.
Alastair says
I find it confusing too.
It says No costumes for anyone over 14 years!!
That puts every person or adults out of the Picture!!
But then in acceptable Costumes it shows Adults wearing costumes as acceptable.
DFB Gigi says
Hi Alastair. The difference here is that you can not wear helmets or face coverings and you can not dress exactly like a certain character that is represented in the Disney Parks. You can certainly make up your own Jedi outfit if you wish to do so or any number of Disney Bounding costumes to represent your favorite character while not being 100% accurate to their costume.
