The Gurgling Suitcase at Walt Disney World’s Old Key West Resort is a little hole in the wall (literally!) between Olivia’s and Good’s Food to Go. But what the space lacks in size, it more than makes up for in exclusive, delicious drinks and fun snack options. We enjoyed the Conch Fritters on a previous visit, and we wouldn’t turn down a few Deep-Fried Pickle Chips (see both here!)
On a recent visit, we spotted a few changes to the Specialty Cocktails Menu. Three drinks were gone — and three more had taken their place. The missing drinks include the Blue Hawai’i, Goombay Splash, and Electric Lemonade. But if one (or all) of those are favorites of yours, the cast members at Gurgling Suitcase say they can still make them — they’re just not featured on the menu any more. So phew! Goombay away, people!
The three drinks that are newly featured on the menu are Papa’s Den, Unlimited Power, and the previously-secret-menu-only Slappy Joe’s Berry Bourbon Lemonade.
Unlimited Power is advertised on a placard on the bar (normally we just keep our unlimited power on the DL, but Gurgling Suitcase wants the World to know!).
This drink is a balance of tart and sweet and is comprised of tequila, blackberry brandy, sweet-and-sour mix, and agave. It’s $13.50 and served with a souvenir glow cube (just a cube — no special design).
We loved the balance of flavors and found it thoroughly (dangerously?) drinkable. Get us a poolside lounge chair and a tray of Unlimited Power and we can accomplish a lot… of relaxing. (Our unlimited power is mostly sitting around drinking and eating, sooo…)
Papa’s Den sounds like a place you shouldn’t be sneaking a drink, but this combination of Jack Daniel’s, Peach Schnapps, Cherry Brandy, Orange Juice, Pineapple Juice, and Grenadine is sweet, tropical, and worth the risk of drinking in Papa’s Den.
The dominant flavor comes from the cherry brandy, and with all that tropical fruit flavor, the Jack Daniels definitely took a backseat. You’ll need to be fan of cherry to really enjoy this one.
But enjoy it we did! The garnish is simple — a maraschino cherry and a wedge of orange — and suits the flavor profile. Papa’s Den is $11.50.
The former secret-menu-cocktail Slappy Joe’s Berry Bourbon Lemonade ($12.50) is another hit, and if you like to taste and feel your liquor, this one’s for you!
Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Blackberry Brandy, Odwalla Lemonade, and a splash of Soda Water are undeniably refreshing, but the bourbon means business!
We expected Slappy Joe to slap us with the tart taste of the Odwalla Lemonade, but the sweetness of the blackberry brandy actually balanced it out so that the tartness was understated. Overall, it was balanced well, and we enjoyed it, but if you’re really hoping for lemonade flavor to come through, you won’t get precisely what you’re hoping for.
The Gurgling Suitcase wins again! We enjoyed all three of the newly-featured drinks, and even though summer is heading out the door, we think these are perfect for the dog days of summer-that’s-technically-fall. Whether you’re staying at Old Key West or make a trip to truly relax at The Gurgling Suitcase, we think the cocktail lovers out there will relish this relatively hidden gem.
