Since the grand opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland and Walt Disney World, we’ve been inundated with questions about this new, immersive land — particularly with respect to the “scrap metal” purveyor found at Savi’s Workshop — Handbuilt Lightsabers!

Here, we’re breaking down some of the most frequently asked questions and providing answers that will help you know what to expect when you build your own lightsaber.
How do I get to Savi’s Workshop?
Disneyland
Savi’s “scrap metal” business (the cover for the Workshop) is located essentially right in the middle of Black Spire Outpost. In Disneyland’s Galaxy’s Edge, the entrance nearest to Savi’s is the Frontierland entrance behind Big Thunder Railroad. When you enter from that direction and turn right, you will pass Droid Depot on your right…

…then curve around the corner and pass Savi’s designated waiting area on your right as you make your way to check-in, pay, and select your lightsaber hilt theme.

To find Savi’s in Disney World is basically the same! Heading in from the Toy Story Land entrance, the first location you’ll encounter here is Droid Depot as well.

The same tell-tale blue banner graces the front of the building. (Remember — there are no real “signs” in Galaxy’s Edge, so keep your eyes peeled!)
What do I do when I get there?
You’ll want to check in with the cast members outside of Savi’s Workshop. At present, you must have a reservation in order to enter the shop, so you’ll check-in for that reservation at one of the registers in front of the shop. In Disneyland, reservations can be made 60 days in advance; as of 2020, Disney World reservations can also be made 60 days prior.

Note that, in the event the land is at capacity, your reservation for Savi’s can also act as your ‘ticket’ into Galaxy’s Edge (if they’re at capacity and running the boarding group process at the time), and you may enter the land up to an hour before your Savi’s reservation time (with a party of up to six). In Disney World, this hasn’t happened since the morning of opening day though, so we’re not TOO worried at this time!

How can I go inside?
When you make your reservation, a credit card is required to hold your spot. If for some reason you do not show up for your Savi’s reservation, you’ll be charged a $219.99 no-show charge (So…you know…don’t forget. Cause that’s a LOT of $$$$!!). When you DO arrive for your reservation, you’ll pay for your lightsaber at check-in and go through the process of selecting your lightsaber hilt theme.
The theme you select will determine the parts you receive during your build. The four themes include Peace and Justice, Power and Control (historically Dark Side)…

If you want to see the parts in person (you may want to feel the weight of them, look at the details, etc.), samples are stored in in a display case out front. You’ll see symbols beside each drawer that represent the themes — and those symbols will come into play shortly!
This storage container holds the key to your hilt!
Once you’ve paid and selected your theme, you’ll receive a card with a group number and a pin representing your theme. The pin is yours to keep — and you’re encouraged to wear it so that the “gatherers” inside know which parts to provide to you.

At this point, you’ll wait in the designated area for your group number to be called. At that time you and your +1 can enter the Workshop.
When I go in, what happens?
When your group is called into Savi’s Workshop, you’ll be shown to a station. Theatrical lighting and dramatic Cast Member performances create a ceremony in which the power of the lightsaber is described and the Kyber Crystals (that’s what powers lightsabers, dontcha know!) are discussed and displayed.

A gatherer comes around with a chamber of Kyber Crystals, and each builder selects the color crystal of her or his choice.

When all builders have their Crystals, gatherers bring a tray of hilt parts to each station. You receive only the hilt parts associated with the theme you selected when you checked in. We’ll cover what all of these parts are in just a bit!

Once you’ve got your tray, it’s time to assemble your hilt. A gatherer will always be nearby should you have any questions, and directions for each step will be given and further explained if needed.
Finding the right combination of parts
As builders complete their hilts, the hilts are placed on a small stand to await the activation ceremony.

When all hilts are assembled, gatherers insert hilts into the activation chamber where hilts will be “fused” with their blades.

With more dramatic lighting and theatrics, the lightsabers activate in unison, creating a colorful, striking effect.

Once activated, the build is complete (TAA-DAA!). Cast Members provide carry bags for your lightsaber, and builders emerge into Black Spire Outpost with their new bundles of lightsaber joy!
What is in the Hilt Kit?
The hilt kit provided to each builder contains a chassis into which the Kyber Crystal fits and around which all of the other pieces fit.

Not EVERYTHING presented is going on your lightsaber. You choose which of the pieces you’d like and leave the rest behind.
There are four sleeves, from which the builder selects two. There are two emitters (for the end of the hilt where the blade comes out), from which the builder selects one. There are two pommel caps (to cover the end of the hilt), from which the builder selects one. And there are two sets of activation plates (fastened around the Kyber Crystal and used to turn the saber on and off) from which the builder also selects one.

Can the hilt parts be interchanged?
If you visit Savi’s more than once and end up with two or more hilts, all of those pieces are interchangeable. So you can take a sleeve from any theme and combine it with activation plates from a different theme, for example. Because you have two sleeves with any theme, you could also switch them around if you wanted a slightly different design but only purchased one lightsaber.
What are the hilts made of? How much do they weigh?
The lightsaber hilt parts are made entirely of metal. (The chassis inside is plastic.) The metal hilt parts come in various colors and textures. The hilt itself weighs over two pounds.

What are the blades made of?
The blades of the lightsaber consist of LED lights inside a “hybrid plastic” formed tube. Disney has described the blades as “duel-ready.”
Can I build more than one at a time?
Disney specifies “one lightsaber per builder per experience.”
How long does this take?
Expect the whole ceremony, build, and activation to take 15-20 minutes (plus whatever time you spend waiting outside).

What do I get for the money?
For $219.99 (plus tax), builders receive their hilt, a 31″ blade, a carry bag, a theme pin, exclusive access to Savi’s for the build experience, and street cred. 😉
Can I change Kyber Crystals?
The Kyber Crystal determines the color and sounds your lightsaber makes, and you can purchase additional Kyber Crystals in order to make your lightsaber do different things. Kyber Crystals can be purchased at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities for $12.99 plus tax.

Will my blade work with legacy hilts from Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities?
Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities does sell Legacy Hilts, meaning ones that resemble those seen in the actual movies of the Star Wars franchise. If you purchase a Legacy Hilt, your Savi’s lightsaber blade will fit the Legacy Hilt. Alternatively, Dok-Ondar also sells lightsaber blades separately for the Legacy Hilts.

What does the Lightsaber do?
Your Savi’s Workshop lightsaber makes a sound and lights up at start-up. The start-up light moves from the hilt outward. The lightsaber also makes sounds unique to each color Kyber Crystal when the lightsaber is wielded. The hilt also makes sounds when the Kyber Crystal is inserted or removed.

How do I change the batteries?
There’s a cylindrical battery pack in the bottom of the chassis that’s hidden by the pommel cap. The pommel cap screws onto the bottom of the hilt, so when you need to replace the three AAA batteries that power the lightsaber, you must unscrew the cap and remove a screw that holds the battery pack in place. Slide the pack out, replace the batteries, reinsert the pack, reinsert the screw, and put the pommel cap back on the hilt. Boom. Done.

If paying $219.99 for a lightsaber seems a little steep, that’s because it’s a lot. Truly. But for Star Wars franchise fans, for those who love the drama of building one, and for those who are looking for a customizable souvenir, it may well be a must-do. We found the experience to be really impactful; the sight of fourteen sabers lighting up simultaneously around the Build Table was magical, and the reactions of Builders in the room made it clear that there’s a Force at work in Savi’s Workshop.

When choosing the crystal during the experience say their out of the purple crystal could I ask for one or do I have to buy that color separately and choose one of the ones that are there?

Do I have to carry the light saber with me the rest of the day or can I pick it up later?
Joel, Disney World has been testing having a retail location hold packages for guests to come back and retrieve later. To our knowledge, it’s only happened at Windtraders in Pandora at Animal Kingdom. We will have our onsite team see if it’s expanding (particularly to Savi’s).
Can you take apart the blade from the hilt? I heard someone saying that you can put a Savi’s Workshop blade on a legacy saber so I just wanted to be sure if I could take the blade off the hilt after it was fused together. I wanted to see because there is a case from Legacy that I could buy that I could use to carry the hilt.

I just wanted to let you know that I’m not planning on keeping it off, I just wanted to see if it could be taken off.
When, you can use the same blade with the Legacy Lightsabers. It does detach from the hilt. You may want to request a demonstration of that either at Savi’s or at Dok Ondar’s to be sure you know how it’s done.
I have a question for the hilt. I know that after you are done making the lightsaber you get a holster that you kinda sling on your back, but I watched a video on the Protection and Defense review and it says that there is something on the bottom of the hilt you can use to do a traditional holster like on your waist. I don’t know or know where to start to try and look for those.
If you can’t answer this it’s fine.
I also have a second question. If of any chance, could you use two emitters on both sides then buy two blades and try to make a double bladed lightsaber? I’m pretty sure you can’t but I wanted to be sure.
Roman, great questions. Regarding the holster, I don’t know of any specifications about what might work. My guess would be any holster that is narrow enough not to allow the hilt to pass through and fall out would work. Perhaps there are folks online who’ve got experience with that. I did just find a video on the lightsaber belt clip that’s available at Dok Ondar’s, so you may want to look into that as an option. I’m not sure that can be used with the blade on the hilt, though. Regarding your question about emitters, my understanding is that the pieces only fit one way. So you can exchange pieces between different themes, for example, as long as you’re changing out an end cap for an end cap, for example. Dok Ondar’s did sell Legacy Lightsabers that fit two blades (I believe Darth Maul and Asajj Ventress have been available). Hopefully this info helps!

I have two questions, one is if you guys are still open? I saw a video saying that Galaxy’s edge saying that you guys are open, it’s just you need to follow quarantine rules.
The second one is that if you guys added sound to the lightsabers. I know that it makes sound when the kyber crystal is inserted, or if it is ignited on or off. I wanted to know if you added a sound to where you wave the blade and it makes a sound, or if it clashes with an object or another blade it makes a noise.

Hi, CrypticValues. Savi’s is open. It requires reservations. You can find that info here. The lightsabers at Savi’s do make sounds when moved, not just at ignition.
I have a question specifically for you, DFB Sarah. If you had to choose which of the 4 hilt types would you build and why?

Sourim, Disneyland Park has a Galaxy’s Edge. It opened in May 2019. Disney has not released info on adding new themes, though the legacy lightsabers in Dok Ondar’s can change and/or be added to sometimes.
Has anyone experienced the light no longer emitting at the bottom of the blade just 5 days after it was purchased. Anyone know how to contact Disney for this issue. Thanks
Anthony, there are some videos and tutorials online from folks who’ve encountered issues with their lightsabers. To contact Disney, I think (407) 939-2273 might be the best number. It’s for non-reservations questions.
Does anyone know why the kyber crystals stop working? I know they have a chip in them. My sons blue one does not work and I noticed it rattles. Is the rattle a guarantee that it is broken? If so, I bought a black one off of eBay for the stocking and just noticed-it rattles! 🙁

Re: the double bladed light saber question above- is their an end piece that would allow two light sabers to be linked end to end to create a double-bladed light saber (realizing that both would have to be paid for of course)?
Quinn, I don’t think Disney has such a piece. Possibly someone has developed this or come up with a way to connect two flat end caps.
Does Savi’s Workshop run out of parts quickly? Recently I realized that some of the parts I want are popular and I’m worried that when I go they won’t have the parts I want.
Balisong, we have not seen them run out of parts in our many visits, nor have we heard of this happening. It’s still possible, of course, but we have no evidence of it at this point.
Question: My son accidentally pushed the batteries for the light sabers into the saber side of the lightsaber. Is there any quick way to get the batteries out?

Is there a Yellow Kyber Crystal when you choose your crystal? If not is there any way to buy a yellow crystal?
PD, if you don’t see a yellow Kyber Crystal, ask if you can have one. You can usually find yellow Kyber Crystals for purchase at Dok Ondar’s Den of Antiquities if you’re unable to get one during the build.

Patrick, I’m not sure how much the hilt is, but it has been available at Dok Ondar’s Den of Antiquities as a Legacy Lightsaber. You’ll need to buy the hilt and the blade. I believe you can not change out the Kyber Crystals, so I’m not sure you’ll be able to make it yellow. At Savi’s you’re limited to the four themes.
What time do reservations open for Savi’s workshop? Midnight? 6am est?This is the one thing my kid wants to do!
Can anyone tell me if my six year old can build on her own lightsaber with me and my husband also building? Specifically, if I pay for three spots at the experience can all three of us build or will one of us “grown-ups” needs to supervise her build, meaning i should only make a reservation for two spots?
Donna, the policy is that “at least one person in the party must be age 14 or older.” Since you and your husband would also be in the Workshop, I suspect they would let you all build. But I can’t say for sure, so you might want to call Disney to see if someone can confirm. I’m sorry I can’t be more definite for you! Good luck.
Are cruise lines familiar with Savis Light Sabers?
I plan on going to Hollywood Studios then getting on a Norwegian cruise leaving from Miami a day later. Do you know if I will have an issue taking it with me?
Ty, I would imagine cruise lines would be fine with a Savi’s lightsaber, but I don’t know this for sure. I would recommend calling the cruise line to confirm.

Alex, you’re right: you can buy scrap metal at the check in desk at Savi’s. Last we checked, they were still doing this.
I have two girls who would want to do this together. To be specific, both girls working on 1 saber. Can they be side by side building it? If they need help can I assist? Or is only one person allowed to actually be hands on?

Ed, Disney’s policy says one Builder per lightsaber. I think I’d give them a call to see what they say, given your situation. You could also talk to a Cast Member on site that day, but I would hate for them to say you need to leave one child behind, so I think calling ahead would be a safer route. If they were to need help, I don’t think you’d be allowed to help; the Gatherers (CMs) will go through and check with each Builder and offer any help that’s needed. Of course, things could be different in person, so I can’t say with 100% certainty.

Just curious. I read somewhere that you could make a reservation for right when the park is closing. When you leave to a nearly empty park you can light the saber up for pictures in Batuu. Have you guys experienced this or do you believe it’s better to build during a daytime appointment?
Hi Scott! If you’re wanting those nighttime lightsaber pictures in Batuu with little to no other guests in your pictures, I’d definitely book the later appointment. You will be on limited time, however, because security will be ushering people out of the park so your photo taking locations may be limited. If you’re wanting to ensure a photo opportunity in front of the Millennium Falcon before park closure, it may be better to book a little bit earlier and take your photos during the evening show while most guests are at the front of the park.
Wanted to know if you didn’t want to carry your saber/ droid all day and your staying at a Disney resort is there a facility to deliver it to your hotel later? Or store it somewhere and pick it up at the end of the day?
Hi Adi! Unfortunately, no. At this time, Package Pickup service is temporarily paused. However, theme park purchases can be shipped to your home via UPS or FedEx for an additional fee.
We just got back from WDW and our first trip to Galaxy’s Edge. My son made a lightsaber at Savi’s and it was absolutely amazing. I know some people balk at the price, but the whole experience is worth it if you have the money to spend on this souvenir. The moment when all the sabers are activated around the table was really cool. Would definitely recommend this to any Star Wars enthusiast. Hands down the best “non-ride” experience my son and I had at WDW.
So say I want to make a reservation in advance but there’s no times available. I’m arriving in disney this Sunday and am going to Hollywood Studios on Tuesday, will I not be able to partake in the experience at all?
Hi Rob. Reservations are required for the lightsaber building experience, unfortunately, but sometimes spots open up so keep checking as often as possible to see if any times become available while you are there.
So we got our replica sabers Friday at the Disney springs starwars tradeing post they all survived the plane ride back home but when we put the blade in ray sky walkers replica and turned it on it made the noise when it gets hit turned off and then repeated with out us touching the switch
