As runners from across the globe start making their way to Disney World’s 2020 Marathon Weekend with events kicking off this Thursday, they have something VERY exciting to look forward to — other than the BIG race!
What are all the runners buzzing about? How about an all-new Club runDisney??!!
That’s right, racing fans! To kick off the new year, runDisney is bringing a little extra motivation to ya with its new Club runDisney! The membership has never been offered before and comes with a pretty hefty amount of perks based on which level you choose! There are three different one-year-long membership levels – Silver, Gold, and Platinum – and each tier features a range of special benefits that will run from October 1st, 2020, through September 30th, 2021!
According to Disney, all folks who join Club runDisney will receive a welcome gift, “including an exclusive jacket and will have access to the lowest race registration pricing all year, a new Virtual 10K in Fall 2020 that is exclusively for Club runDisney members, and special Club runDisney designation on race bibs during on-site events. All of these benefits are included with a Silver Membership.” We like the thought of showing off our Club runDisney status on our race bibs! The cost of the Club runDisney Silver Membership will be $265.43. Here’s a sneak peek at what the new Club runDisney Membership Jacket looks like — WE LOVE IT!!!
“Gold Membership will include these perks, along with early registration access with a guaranteed spot in the half marathon or marathon distance each race weekend.” Guaranteed spot? Yes, please! The cost of the Club runDisney Gold Membership will be $478.63.
“Platinum Membership will have all of these benefits, plus early registration with a guaranteed spot in one distance each race weekend; upgraded corral placement; and an exclusive Expo experience with early admittance to the runDisney Merchandise Shop, a special character meet-and-greet, and access to a Club runDisney Lounge with expedited race packet pick-up.” Upgraded corral placement sounds pretty sweet to us! And a special members-only character greeting is like the cherry-on-top! Club runDisney Platinum Membership will cost $798.43.

Talk about a money grab…

Corral placement should be determined based solely on expected finish time. It’s not just the money aspect of it, but for the safety of runners on both ends of the spectrum.
This isn’t a good look.

So for Silver it says “access to the lowest race pricing” but for Gold and Platinum it “guarantees registration”…does that imply that the registration fees are INCLUDED for Gold and Platinum members? because if that’s the case, it would MAYBE be beneficial if you are planning to do several Half Marathons in a single year, but i cannot imagine that paying $800 for a platinum membership and then ALSO paying hundreds of dollars in registration fees would make sense for anyone. My Gold Annual Pass didn’t even cost $800! But given that registration fees are usually $200-300 for the longest distance races, if they were included in the price of the membership that might make sense for some people to do? Otherwise, this seems crazy.
A guaranteed spot is only a benefit for people who don’t register right away – i am DVC and an AP holder, and have absolutely never had a problem getting in on the early registration day; and even when i didn’t do that, i have never had an issue when i tried to register on the first day that general registration opens. Most people will have decided whether they’re running the race before registration opens, because they’ll have gotten a room reserved by then. So unless the guaranteed spot actually means that registration is included in the price of the membership, i don’t see this as a perk at all. Better corral placement would be nice, but not $800 nice, unless it includes event registration fees as well. I feel like more details are necessary here.

Disney always promotes that nothing is more important than guest safety. As a serious runner, upgraded corral placement is a horrible idea and jeopardizes safety. There are already enough runners starting in faster corrals than they should. It is a dangerous experience when a 7 minute pace runner has to encounter a 10 minute pace runner at the start.

I’m waiting for the extra fee to be allowed to breath while at disney. Come on! Walt is turning over in his grave over all these “extra” perks with high fees.

I absolutely agree with the other commenter who said corral placement should be based solely on expected finish time. Are they really going to allow people to buy their way up? That is the most absurd thing I ever heard. It is an insult to the sport of running and everyone who trains to earn their spot. Not to mention how unsafe it is for everyone. I know Disney want to make money. I will pay the exorbitant cost for tickets, food and souvenirs but feel like a line is crossed here.

Did I miss where you said this?
Are the prices for the Membership ON TOP OF the cost of the races?
So basically $800 for platinum membership plus $600 for the race? Or whatever the price it?
That’s rediculous!!
What exactly is the benefit of being “In the club?”
James Knowles says
You think that’s “VERY exciting”? Shill away.

I’m a passholder. I have early signup
The corrals should be determined by speed not by money. Well have Walker’s slowing the better runners down. Cant see any reason to join
