If you’ve been following along with our coverage of Hollywood Studios’ Rise of the Resistance since it’s grand opening back in December, then you know how tricky getting into a coveted boarding group for the new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge major attraction has been at Disney World!
And with Disneyland’s Rise of the Resistance poised to open on January 17th, here’s what you’ll need to know to ensure your place in line at the west coast’s version of the ride!
We know you’re excited about your first escape from the First Order when Rise of the Resistance officially opens in Disneyland next week. That’s why we want you to be prepared for what to expect! And while you probably don’t want to read any spoilers (if you do, that’s ok, too! Click here to read ’em!) you DO want to know about how you’ll be boarding the ride.
Sorry, folks — this isn’t going to be a walk-up and get-on situation. Similar to Disney World’s Rise of the Resistance, you will need a boarding pass to ride it, which means getting to Disneyland EARLY!
Don’t forget, as we shared a few weeks ago, Disneyland’s Rise of the Resistance will be doing a virtual queue system very similar to what we’ve seen already encountered at Disney World. Using the official Disneyland mobile app, you’ll be able to reserve your place in a boarding group to ride the new attraction after you have entered the Disneyland park. That means you can arrive at the park as early as you want, but the virtual queue system won’t be accessible until AFTER the park officially opens. (We do recommend getting there early though because then you’ll have a better chance at getting a boarding group — which fill up very QUICKLY!)
Once you request and successfully join a boarding group, you’re free to roam and go wherever you like. You’ll receive a push notification when its time to return to Rise of the Resistance and you can also check the status of the boarding groups at anytime using the app.
If you don’t have the Disneyland app, there will be a few locations inside the park where you can join, but we HIGHLY recommend downloading the app, — and make sure you do so before heading to the park! Disney also has stated, “Admission into Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will be subject to capacity, and having an assigned boarding group will not guarantee entrance to the attraction.” As you may remember, Disney World’s Rise of the Resistance experience quite a few hiccups in its early days and broke down frequently, causing delays and unfortunately disappointing some fans who were unable to ride it.
We’re hoping Rise of the Resistance’s grand opening in Disneyland goes a lot smoother and many folks are able to enjoy the new ride! Stay tuned, as we’ll be reporting live from Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge when Rise of the Resistance opens next Friday!

Question about Magic Mornings / staying on the property…
While I know I will not be able to get a boarding pass until the park officially opens, one would believe that a supported Magic Morning day would eliminate the need for me to get to the park super early to wait in line to scan in. I realize that once scanned in and the park is officially open, it is a free-for-all for obtaining a boarding pass.
Just trying to avoid having to get to the park several hours early with my entire party, including two kids, if I can take advantage of getting scanned in without waiting in a (bigger) line using Magic Morning.
“Once you request and successfully join a boarding group, you’re free to roam and go wherever you like.” Does this include park hopping over to California Adventure, then returning to Disneyland once our boarding group is up?
Season, at Walt Disney World, guests in the virtual queue could leave the park and come back when they received their push notification. We expect that is also true at Disneyland, but we don’t have confirmation yet.
Steve, Hollywood Studios doesn’t have any Early Morning Magic (the extra ticketed event) in the foreseeable future. If you’re referring to the complimentary Extra Magic Hours, the Park has also moved all of theirs for the next few months to evening Extra Magic Hours. That means the Park opens when it opens, and you’ll need to be there (with your whole party) to get in the virtual queue when it does. This may change later in the spring (or later in the year) depending on how crowds and needs change.
Hello. Love your videos. I am trying to subscribe for newsletters, but IT does not work.
Can you help me?
Does one person checkin the whole family?
@Gina – Everyone has to scan in through the front gate turnstiles. After that, assuming you have linked your party together in the Disney app, one person can request boarding passes for those who are “scanned” in. The process should be similar to requesting FastPasses through the the Disney App via MaxPass.
Gina, as Steve said: everyone who wants to ride needs to scan into the park. One person in the group can then get a boarding group for the whole group (assuming there are boarding groups left).
Hilde, I can forward your email to our newsletter manager!
