When Hollywood Studios recently switched up its FastPass tiers giving Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run and Slinky Dog Dash equal billing, we knew an epic clash of the attractions would soon be ensuing amongst our family members.
You see, while many of our tribe are adamant Slinky Dog Dashers, there are also quite a few Smugglers Runners in our midst. The decision was already proving itself to be difficult enough when days later Disney released FastPasses for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway — yet ANOTHER top tier attraction. And now that you can only make a FastPass for one of these three top tier attractions in advance, how do you decide?
If you’ve been to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge already but BEFORE Rise of the Resistance opened, you may be thinking “Why do I need a FastPass for Millennium Falcon?”
See Hollywood Studio’s most current FastPass Tiers HERE!
You see, back in the day, it wasn’t uncommon for standby wait times for the Star Wars simulator ride to be in the 20-30 minute range. But Toy Story Land’s Slinky Dog Dash roller coaster has always had at least an hour-long wait since its grand opening (and that’s on “low-crowd” days!). And with Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway set to debut March 4th, we’re anticipating some hefty standby lines for folks who want to experience Hollywood Studios’ newest attraction!
Now that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is fully operational, though, we’ve seen wait times for Millennium Falcon SOAR. They’re now right on par with Slinky Dog Dash, so a FastPass for Millennium Falcon makes a lot more sense now than it did before Rise of the Resistance came online!
That brings us back to the ultimate question — which tier one Hollywood Studios attraction is the best use of your FastPass: Millenium Falcon, Slinky Dog Dash, or Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway? And the answer, in our opinion, is…it depends! In order to make the best decision for yourself and your family, let’s examine the following:
What Type of Rides Do You Prefer?
Millennium Falcon, Slinky Dog Dash, and Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway are all totally different experiences! Millennium Falcon is a dark, enclosed flight simulator with loud noises, lots of jostling, and some interactive features (yes, YOU get to be either a pilot, gunner, or engineer onboard the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy!).
Slinky Dog Dash, however, is an outdoor roller coaster (located in Andy’s backyard!) starring some of your favorite Toy Story friends! Both rides have great theming and are family-friendly, but for folks who don’t like confined spaces or being “shook up,” Slinky Dog Dash might be your best bet.
Vice versa, if members of your wolf pack are afraid of heights or roller coasters (even though Slinky Dog Dash is relatively tame and not particularly high up, compared to other Disney world coasters) consider opting for Millennium Falcon instead!

But better yet, if you’re not into simulators OR rollercoasters, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway might be just the ticket! Housed in The Great Movie Ride’s former show building, this is the most gentle option of the three! Plus it’s the first time Mickey and Minnie have EVER appeared in a Disney theme park ride? Can you believe it’s taken this long? We can’t either!
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will have tons of hidden Easter eggs and a secondary storyline! Find out more HERE!
Which Attraction Have You Never Ridden Before?
Is there one of these rides that you haven’t experienced yet? Then FastPass it! Since Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway isn’t even open yet, we know you haven’t been on THAT one yet! Even if you prefer to use your FastPasses on the other attraction next time, you’ll at least know what you’re missing!
Haven’t ridden ANY of them? Our advice is to get to the park early and ride the attraction (or maybe even attractions!) that you didn’t reserve FastPasses for FIRST will the crowds are still relatively low. Besides, if you’re trying to snag a boarding group for Rise of the Resistance, then you’re probably already planning on being at Hollywood Studios when the park opens (or WAY earlier!).
If you wanna FastPass more than one of these rides, try planning two (or better yet THREE) days at Hollywood Studios instead of just one! They don’t have to be full days if you have the Park hopper ticket option. Just be sure you’re comfortable “spending” your FastPasses in Hollywood Studios for two or three days, even if you plan to go to another park later. And if you haven’t gotten to check out Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge since it opened, giving yourself some extra time to explore would definitely be a good thing!Â

Who Are You Traveling With?
Alright, we know we just told you to pick the one you haven’t tried yet, but you know the people you live with better than we do!
If the possibility of not riding one of these attractions would devastate some in your group, it’s probably not worth trying something new and jeopardizing your entire family vacation! Therefore, if you have diehard Star Wars peeps, Toy Story ride-or-dies, or Mickey and Minnie must-dos in your traveling party, give ’em what their hearts desire MOST!
And if your children are big enough to ride by themselves, you can always divide and conquer! You don’t have to be a certain age to ride Millennium Falcon or Slinky Dog Dash, but riders must be at least 38″ tall. And while there’s no height requirement for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway, all guests under the age of 7 must be accompanied by a person 14 years of age or older to get on any of these attractions!Â
Slinky Dog Dash and Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway Don’t Have a Single Rider Queue… But Millennium Falcon Does!
If your party doesn’t mind splitting up, you may want to consider making your FastPasses for Slinky Dog Dash or Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway and utilizing Millennium Falcon’s single rider queue.
If you don’t mind riding with strangers, this could be a great way to ride! Just remember, due to the way the jobs are handed out, single riders are more likely to assume the roles of the engineers, although it’s not unheard of for single riders to snag a coveted pilot or gunner seat!
So the choice is ultimately yours! We hope we gave you a few things to consider when making this tough decision!
Of course, we could very well see the Hollywood Studios’ tiers shift again when Rise of the Resistance begins distributing FastPasses as we did when Disney began handing them out for Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway! Even though deciding between Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, Slinky Dog Dash, and Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway may seem difficult now, we have a feelin’ this is only the beginning of MORE tough choices to come!

What is your recommendation if we don’t have Fastpasses for either ride? I had a snafu and wasn’t able to get my FPs when my windows opened. And, Smugglers Run FPs started days after my window opened and I didn’t know about it till it was too late. And- Runaway Railroad should be open when we go in mid-March. We’ll arrive at HS at 6:30am, which line should we jump in first? Do you think we’ll be able to do them all without FPs?

I’m just not a huge Slinky Dog fan…and honestly I liked Smuggler’s Run more than Rise, which I think is heretical. But I’d FP Smuggler’s Run every time!

I plan on riding both for the first time in September. For me this choice is easy. I would get a fast pass for slinky dog dash.
My logic is that smugglers run has a better queue to wait in. IIs way more immersive plus a lot of it is indoors

Wendy, my suggestion would be to keep checking for a Slinky Dog Dash FastPass since that’s likely going to be your longest wait. If you can’t get one, head there first to ride Standby. It’s hard to say how Runaway Railway lines will fare or when they’ll release FastPass for it, but as a general rule, keep checking for FastPasses for all three rides between now and when you arrive. Grab any FastPass you can get (and keep checking back for the others or a better time), and plan to rope drop one of the others. I would expect you can ride all three rides — you just might find yourself in 1-2 lines. Note that Smugglers Run does have some interactive elements in the queue (and single rider if that’s an option for you), so that’s not a terrible line in which to wait. Have a wonderful trip!

Wendy, FYI: MMRR now has FastPass availability!

My opinion: I’ve been on both without FP. The queue for Millennium Falcon is incredibly interesting and fun. Going through the line without a FP was part of the experience. Not so much with Slinky Dog. I would FP Slinky Dog and enjoy the line for Millennium. Of course, the Railway ride may change my upcoming plans…
