We’re still feeling the excitement over the recent announcement that Cinderella Castle will begin a massive refurbishment in the coming weeks in preparation for Disney World’s 50th Anniversary in 2021.
This transformation, which will begin soon and continue through the summer, will result in a very noticeable difference to the castle’s appearance, and we have more details to share about its new look!
Jason Kirk, Vice President of Magic Kingdom, has provided more insight on what the transformation will entail and what guests can expect to see when the new castle design is complete.
As we mentioned in our previous article covering the announcement, the shingles of the castle “appear to have a deeper, richer hue of blue“, much like what Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland received when it underwent its refurbishment last year. The article goes on to describe that the “inner curtain” of the castle will be transforming into a “soft rose-pink” hue. So, it has now been confirmed that the castle will indeed be pink! This sure sounds a lot like Sleeping Beauty Castle, but only time will tell what the final look will be!
The article also emphasized that no stage shows or other attractions surrounding the castle would be impacted by the transformation. No word yet on how extensive the construction will be and if the castle will be covered in scrim like Project Stardust in Disneyland. We will be sure to keep you in the know as we learn more about this renovation.

We are going in June and we are very worried it is going to impact our trip our view of Main Street and the magical photos we have been waiting over a year for!

If the castle is covered in scrim, I will be so mad at Disney– going there after Easter and probably my last trip to the Magic Kingdom so please do not ruin my “magic” but corporate greed will prevail and say “screw you” come back another day. Not everyone can just afford to spend thousands of dollars every year and vacation in Orlando. I know I sound bitter but with all the construction in EPCOT, I know that I will spend all my time in World Showcase. Since the parking lot is in the front, I’ll just walk past all the mess and avoid Future World as apparently, the Future isn’t until 2021 anyway!!!

I am very disappointed that this will be happening during our trip at the end of April. This is a once and done trip for my family and the most iconic thing at WDW will be under refurb. So annoyed that we will not be able to get those “magical” pictures in front of the castle without some sort of construction. Seriously Disney?! They should section a bit at a time so maybe at least some of the picture can be salvaged. And a scrim doesn’t cut it for me.

Disneyland is Sleeping Beauty’s castle and Walt Disney World is Cinderella’s castle. Sleeping Beauty’s color is pink. Cinderella’s color is blue. Making them look more alike is a serious mistake. Especially for young children who tell them apart by their color. I think the “deeper, richer” blue for the shingles on Cinderella’s castle, while in general pretty, is too “deeper, richer”. Now, I live in South Florida and am well aware of how quickly and badly painted structures fade. I think a LITTLE bit deeper and richer blue on the shingles might have been nice, but this is too much. Furthermore, the walls should have been left to look like enormous stone blocks. After all, castle walls in medieval times were made of stone blocks and WERE NOT painted at all, much less pink. All in all, this was a poor decision. When are the corporate honchos at WDW going to accept the fact that the choices they make are for Disney’s guests, NOT for its executives.

If you read John Hench’s “Designing Disney”—one of the all-time great books about WDW’s construction and design—you’ll understand how much though Hench put into the colors for Cinderella Castle. He was meticulous about nailing the exact shade for each of Disney’s parks, based largely on the sky color in that particular part of the world. I somehow doubt that that much thought went into this decision.

Apparently they are following their current movie philosophy of “All the copies, all the sequels, no imagination.” I am all for renovations and refurbishments generally, as long as the result is fresh, exciting and high quality. Happily Ever After is fantastic. But making Cinderella’s castle look like Sleeping Beauty’s castle is a terrible idea. This seems like a practical joke.

Am I the only one here who thinks the concept art looks gorgeous? Cinderella is my favorite princess, but when I visited WDW back in 2018, the castle was kind of underwhelming. Disneyland is my home park and I have to say Sleeping Beauty castle has my heart, so when project Stardust came along I was extremely sad that the scrim came up when I brought my family along for my nephew’s first ever visit and we couldn’t get a group picture in front of it. But it’s out of my control, and the result ended up strikingly beautiful so I’d say the ends justified the means.
Plus, it’s adding gold, which works perfectly for the 50th anniversary coming in 2021. Like Walt said (and what everyone loves to quote when they take away something I love on the West Coast), “Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world. It is something that will never be finished.”

We took our 3 year old daughter to see Cinderella’s castle in 1997 when the executives had the great idea of making it in to a cake for Mickey’s birthday and it was painted BRIGHT pink. we had never seen such a monstrosity it was hideous and partially ruined her holiday. When we went back in 2001 and 2002 you could still see the pink paint weeping through the grey they had repainted it, a manager at that time told us it was the worse idea they had ever had and would never do it again so corporate memory has been lost. I agree with another person’s comments, the castles should reflect the colours used in the original animated movies, period.

Am I the only person whose trip isn’t going to be ruined by the castle being under refurbishment? I’m going in June and if it’s covered, it’s covered. Sure I’d love a family photo in front of the castle but that just gives my family an opportunity to be more creative and find other spots for photos. Maybe we’ll act like pirates in front of pirates or put our arms out to fly in front of Dumbo or be fish in front of Little Mermaid or shrink to tiny balls in front of It’s a Small World or be scared in front of the Haunted Mansion. I mean, come on, it’s not going to ruin your trip unless you let it. You’ll spend maybe 15 minutes looking at the Castle and then move on to other things (unless you’re watching a show which they said wouldn’t be impacted). I can just image all the complaining that would go on if they didn’t do anything to it fix it up “It’s the 50th anniversary and I can’t believe they didn’t fix up the castle” “My trip was ruined because the paint was flaking off the castle and it ruined our photos”. Just have fun, you are lucky enough to go to Disney World, enjoy it, make memories and don’t sweat the stuff you can’t control (you’ll be sweaty enough anyways)!
