With nationwide closures in effect, we’ve been wondering when we might see Disneyland reopen.
Disneyland has remained closed since March 14th, marking the longest closure in park history. Since the situation is constantly evolving, Disney has not announced when they expect to reopen. But Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti recently commented on how long he expects large gatherings to be suspended for.
When Disneyland first closed its gates, it was scheduled to last through March 31st. But, when an extension was announced, Disney didn’t give a new opening date, instead saying it would last “until further notice.”
While we don’t have any official word from Disney, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti recently made comments on how long it may be until the city resumes large functions again. According to Mayor Garcetti, large gatherings like sporting events or concerts may not resume until 2021.
In an interview with CNN, Garcetti said “It’s difficult to imagine us getting together in the thousands anytime soon, so I think we should be prepared for that this year.” Garcetti did mention that he has some optimism, as Los Angeles seems to have flattened the curve, but the local stay-at-home order has been extended until at least May 15th.
The mayor also explained that the reopening of businesses will likely be a slow process, saying, “There is no light switch that will go on, this is more like a circuit breaker box and we have to have the ability to turn it all off again should we see outbreaks.”
While Garcetti did not directly refer to Disneyland in the interview, the theme parks would likely fall under the “large gatherings” he mentioned, given the capacity of the parks. We’ll keep an eye out for any additional updates from Disney or the local government!

But does he have say in what Orange County does?
Miles B says
I feel like this is a lot of misinformation and misleading click bait. He is the mayor of the City of Los Angeles. Disneyland is in the city of Anaheim, in Orange County. Garcetti would have zero authority over Disneyland.
Jennifer says
Agree with thelafooddiary. Disneyland is in Anaheim. Only the governor and mayor of Anaheim have any say in what businesses in Anaheim will do……

But, he isn’t the mayor of Anaheim. L.A. is several cities away from Anaheim. While the governor may speak on the while state, a mayor of a city, cannot.
JR says
The LA mayor has zero power over Disneyland, it is located in Orange county not Los Angeles county. He will effect Universal and some other smaller parks.
If you want to keep up with rules for Disneyland you need to follow the Orange County mayor, not the larger county next door just because they are a bigger name. They may or may not do things differently

No, but Gov Newsom does and he’s said the same thing. I have a short reservation at the end of July that I thought might be safe, now, not so much. I will wait until the last minute before canceling, but I don’t have high hopes. ☹️

Disneyland is located in Orange County in the city of Anaheim.

Eric Garcetti does NOT speak for the entirety of the southern California refion, JUST Los Angeles city proper.
The mayor of Anaheim, nor the Orange County board of supervisors has made any statement, so please stop taking anything a city mayor OUTSIDE of his jurisdiction says, as fact.
Disneyland will reopen when the CDC and OC health officials deem it safe.
Gina Adams says
It will be up to local mayors. Just like Trump can’t open the country, governors can’t open cities. The mayors should be responsible for making these decisions. I would say it should matter what the individual establishments have done to help protect their guests. I hope they actually give us our freedom of choice back and let us decide. This police state is becoming a constitutional conflict. The longer they keep up prisoners, the harder it will be to give us back our freedom.
Amber says
Disneyland is in Anaheim, not LA. The bigger issue is the governor feels the same way. However he did not mention theme parks. Theme parks invite thousands of guests, but they do not have to be in as tight of quarters as a concert for a length of time.

l a city mayor has no say in anything that happens in O.c.
