Disney has just announced they’re moving forward with plans to reopen parts of Disney Spring in less than two weeks!
After Disney World closed as a safety precaution for guests, Disney Springs followed suit by shutting down its stores and restaurants. Now we’ve just learned Disney plans to open a limited number of locations during what they’re referring to as “the initial phase.”
Following the guidance of government and health officials, some third-party operators in Disney Springs will be re-opening to the public on May 20th while the rest of Walt Disney World Resort will remain closed until further notice including theme parks and hotels.
According to Disney, “Disney Springs will begin to reopen in a way that incorporates enhanced safety measures, including increased cleaning procedures, the use of appropriate face coverings by both cast members and guests, limited-contact guest services, and additional safety training for cast members.”
Disney Springs will have capacity limitations when it opens as well as reduced parking and operating hours.
Keep up with all the other Disney World re-openings here!
Additional safety measures and procedures may be announced at a later time which Disney will provide on DisneySprings.com as May 20th approaches. This information will potentially include which stores and restaurants will be re-opening along with their operating hours and safety procedures.
This will be the first Disney World location to reopen. Disney has also announced that Shanghai Disneyland will reopen on May 11th with new health measures as well. You can learn more about the reopening of Shanghai Disneyland here.
We’ll continue to report of this developing story!

I’m actually disappointed to learn this news. I love Disney. My family and I vacation at WDW every year, I’m a Disney shareholder and a WDW College Program alumnus. During the first day of orientation I distinctly remember being taught about the importance of guest safety, how it was the company’s highest priority over everything else and, therefore, out highest priority as cast members. Since the State of Florida has not yet achieved a 14-day downward trajectory in COVID-19 infections as required by the CDC guidelines for states to begin reopening, I feel that Disney is not adhering to the highest possible standard in this instance. Walt’s high standards are what made Disney Parks the industry leader. I hope and pray that this isn’t the first of many steps in the wrong direction.

Wow, great news… it is a start to recovery of all the things we all love so much. I only hope that Disney can continue to work to rebuild, reimagine and refurbish the existing parks and hotels so that when we get an all new improved world to enjoy

This is a great first step and for those of you concerned about this. It clearly states that the restaurants and stores that are opening are not Disney owned. I am very happy about this and I am planning on supporting those restaurants. Restaurants in Florida are already open with a 25% capacity unless they are outdoors and Tampa is actually closing some streets to give these establishments more room to operate with social distancing. These restaurants need to start opening and with social distancing I am thinking these places will be safer than the current essential stores that have remained open with many many people in them. I am willing to adhere to any standards or procedures they deem essential in order to visit. I already have a reservation for the opening day and I am hoping others will support these venues. Those of you that don’t feel safe or think this is wrong have the option to stay home while others test the waters.

@WDWAddict — I totally agree with you. As someone who is elderly and has some health issues, as do a number of my friends and family, we won’t be going – as much as we’d absolutely love to enjoy the parks again – for quite a while. Entertainment at the possible cost of our lives just isn’t worth the return on investment!
For everyone who sees things differently and will be there from day one, I wish you a happy and safe choice!!!

Can’t imagine how they are going to limit people in that very cramped shopping district. They have to get rid of the carts and food trucks to provide ample social distancing. And the stores, how are you going to manage social distancing in the stores? They have to start somewhere and will learn from there. I guess it is worth a try.

I was thinking that they were talking about the retail shopping in the new area that is much like a mall and also I don’t think they will be having food carts. To my knowledge this is an opening of non Disney restaurants and non Disney retail. It also says they are limiting people and parking so I am sure they will adhere to the 25% capacity and there won’t be issues with that. I do know that a couple retail stores like the basin have been operating during the shut down. We will just have to see how it goes. It will most likely be a very limited opening. I made reservations at one of the restaurants for lunch so I am looking forward to seeing what they do.

Hopefully Disney will be making wise choices to ensure the best and safest opening procedures.Better to hold off then regret a early opening.
