While many Florida restaurants and retail locations have slowly started to reopen, the same can’t be said for the state’s many convention centers which have remained dormant since March.
Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando, Orange County, Broward County, and Miami Beach all have large convention centers.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, the Orange County Convention Center is preparing to host a major national sporting event next month.
A gathering of 30,000 people is expected to attend a high school-age national volleyball tournament. The 47th AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships is still on the books for June 16 with assurances it will follow social distancing in queues and other safety measures. AAU officials have stated over 100,000 people attended last year’s event. This year, only a third of the participants will arrive in Orlando.
Officials have provided a list of safety procedures including mandatory temperature checks of the players. They are currently discussing strategies for masking, hand-washing, and pre-screening prior to admitting guests. Orlando Health will have a medical team on-site “to oversee and ensure a safe environment for all participants.”
This will be the first event hosted at the convention center since Florida’s state of emergency was declared. With talks of bringing in other major sporting events to Disney World such as the NBA, we’ll be very curious to see how new protocols are implemented. And if anything changes, we will let you know!
