As part of a multi-year transformation of Walt Disney World’s EPCOT, Spaceship Earth — the attraction that also serves as the park’s icon — was set to undergo a major refurbishment of its own.
That refurbishment was supposed to begin on May 26th. And, in fact, even at press time, Spaceship Earth is still listed as being closed for refurbishment on Walt Disney World’s website.
However, according to an article by the Orlando Sentinel, the refurbishment of Spaceship Earth has been postponed indefinitely. The article shares information from Eric Clinton, leader of the Local 362 union.
Regarding cast members who will be returning to Walt Disney World for the reopening of the theme parks this summer, Clinton noted that employees will be needed to staff Spaceship Earth since the ride will be open to guests.
So, it looks as though we will see the “grand and miraculous” attraction that we have known for a long time now…
… when EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios welcome guests back starting July 15th. They will follow the opening of Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom on July 11th, and you can find more information on the upcoming reopening of Walt Disney World by visiting any of the links below.

I, for one, am very happy Spaceship Earth will remain the same! I love that ride just as it is, even if it’s a little dated. Hopefully, I’ll be back to ride it once again when things settle down.
Karen - Disney Fan from Ohio says
This makes me sooo happy!! I rode Spaceship Earth for potentially the last time at the end of January. Now, I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to ride it again sometime in the future.

We wanted at least one last ride, but since our May vacation has been rescheduled, we have accepted the fact that wasn’t meant to be.
But , this makes us happy, while we wait for the official notification from Disney that this is true.
nancy says
Great news!! Why can’t they just leave some of these attractions alone. Build new, don’t destroy the old..a lot of guests can’t ride the new motion type rides…we get less and les each year we can ride!
This is almost as good news as if they said we are reopening the old GMR !!
Suzy says
This is the kind of news we need right now!
Robert says
Gona be there September 1st and was really upset that it was supposed to be down for a while. Im incredibly happy ill be able to ride it one more time, and this last time will be with my brother who hasnt been there since he was 10. Heres to having a great time and making weird yet still great memories!
Dana says
How is this “a lot better”? This ride desperately needs a refurbishment and update. I get that there wouldn’t be as many rides when the parks reopen, but they were planning on this anyway. I also get the nostalgia factor, but I was really looking forward to the new version.
Deborah Brooks-Smith says
I am glad it will be the same my family enjoyed it long ago an now to the grandkids will as well. Thank you Disney for leaving it.
Robert says
Hi Dana! I think its just a money thing. For me to enjoy it one last time is definitely a nostalgic part of it and youre completely right, it does need a good refurbishment but im not upset and im sure it will happen. For now ill enjoy it one last time
Helen says
Fabulous!
We needed some good news. 👍

I’m so looking forward to riding Spaceship Earth one last time AS IS in October. Yes, it’s old and outdated, but so is Classical Music!! That’s why they are called “classics”. IF Disney wants to spend money on a tired, old ride to refurbish it, let’s start with Carousel of Progress in MK Tomorrowland!!!! That ride is silly, but so much fun to ride through, counting how many “future” items are still NOT here (and how many are actually here, like VR). Plus, I like counting how many animatronics are broken on the ride (like the dog not wagging his head).
Niki says
Sooo glad to hear this! Leave Spaceship Earth alone. Whoo hoo!
BT says
If it’s indefinitely, I know for a fact that now they have some serious upkeep that needs to be addressed, that was postponed due to the refurb.
Adam says
Hopefully we’ll get a chance to ride it again! One of our favourites and perfect just the way it is.
Was supposed to be there in April from the UK and the chance to experience it again before they fix what isn’t broken, just can’t be missed!
Will says
I was looking forward to an update. I loved the previous versions of this ride, but have always thought this version felt flat compared. On top of that, I feel this needs an update. I do not see this as good news. Sorry.
NENolan says
Better? How is this better? The ride has lots of issues and is breaking down frequently. It happened twice on a previous trip. I’m not sure the Spaceship Earth refurb being postponed indefinitely is such a great thing. Yes, I love most of the current ride and it’s classic but it’s desperately in need of help! The ending is just plain awful. This is the icon of the park so I’m very disappointed.
J.R. says
With all of the money that Disney has been losing by the closing of the parks and their hotels, no cruise ships sailing, and no movies being released in theaters, it sounds like this is one of many moves that the company will be doing to save money. Just saying
Janet McClay says
I am sad that they are putting it on hold because it so needs to be refurbished as does most of the park but we go on it very little as we are PH and if there is not a line we go on…..
Hope they get back on track to getting it brought into this century!!!
NENolan says
I guess I’ll also have to continue seeing that creepy faceless newsboy indefinitely too.
Vanessa says
I am THRILLED! The announcement came so fast I didn’t think there was going to be any way my family would get to say goodbye and now we will ON REOPENING DAY! No narrator will ever be as good as the Dame and the new version, whenever it does come, won’t have the same charm and beauty as this one. I am very happy to be hanging on to this version for a little longer.
Jo brown says
I hope it’s still open when we go in November
Lori Rienhardt says
Hooray! I’m glad it’s not going down.
Nancy says
Dana, NOT everything New is Better! Especially when it comes to Attractions..there was a reason Disney never called them “rides” 🙂
Melissa says
Spaceship Earth is one of my favorite attractions! I love the original & I definitely will miss it. We said goodbye to it last October but I’ll be glad to have another farewell ride this year. That being said I believe the refurbishment will be great, & I’m looking forward to it!
Jennifer says
Yay! Dame Judi Dench will remain! We can thank the Phoenicians!
Deborah McKeown says
If it was up to me, Walter Cronkite would still be narrating the ride! Keep the old favorites !
Kathy Harris says
I love the old rides and was sad that spaceship earth was changing. I miss the great movie ride so much at HS. Did not like the new ride there at all.
Michelle D says
For this, I thank the Phoenicians!!!
Robby says
I’m sure it’s a money issue for the delay in redoing this attraction. I think it was stupid on Disney’s part to not continue with the construction and remodels that were underway at the time the parks closed. They could have had 3 shifts going and reopened ahead of the original finish dates for so many projects. Epcot could be a whole park again instead of just world showcase like it is now.
A O M says
Spaceship Earth does need a referb, but not like Its a Small World, soo cheaply done! I guess the Covid closures and limitations are having there effect!
Tony Procopio says
Love spaceship earth just the way it is and bring back the great movie ride. One last thing miss Main Street Bakery.
