It’s been quite the day so far with exciting news coming out of Disney World. For those itching to get back to Galaxy’s Edge when Disney’s Hollywood Studios reopens in Disney World on July 15, they may be happy to know that many of the major attractions and shops will be open.
And yep — the reopening list includes the fan favorite Rise of the Resistance! This attraction has been the must-ride choice since it opened in December of 2019.
But we’re also getting word of another MAJOR development that will change the way we’ve come to experience “getting in line” for this ride!
We just confirmed via the Disney World website chat system that Disney World will not use any virtual queues (i.e lines for rides that are managed digitally, so you “join” them from a smartphone app). This was a possibility we had discussed in the past, and we know now that it looks like only standby (regular, good ol’ ride lines) will be available for Disney World’s rides and attractions.
Further, reporter Scott Gustin confirmed that this mandate includes Rise of the Resistance.
NEW: Disney has told Cast Members there will be no virtual queues used for attractions when parks reopen. This includes Rise of the Resistance. Single rider lines will also not be utilized.
This information has not been posted online (yet) but Cast Members have been informed.

That’s right, as of right now (things change ALL the time, however) if you want to join forces with the Resistance and take on the First Order, it sounds like your ONLY option will be a traditional standby queue. In addition to no virtual queues, there will be no Single Rider lines at any attractions, and the entire FastPass+ system has been temporarily suspended for the time being).
Rise of the Resistance was a major development in virtual queueing for Disney World. When the attraction first opened, guests had to join a Boarding Group, assigned at random, via the My Disney Experience app on their smartphones.
Due to the immense popularity of the ride, these Boarding Groups were snatched up FAST. And anyone who wanted to ride essentially needed to be INSIDE the park gates before the official opening time to have a chance at riding!
Now, it looks as though anyone in Disney’s Hollywood Studios each day will have an equal shot to ride via standby queue. But to get the best chance to ride without too long a queue, you’ll want to arrive as EARLY as possible! May the force be with you!

Have you been on Rise of the Resistance yet? What do you think of folks only being able to wait in a standby queue for this attraction? Let us know in the comments!
Kim says
Are they getting rid of all the virtual queues because the capacity in the parks will be so low? I wonder how long these lines will be? Assuming we get reservations Monday, we’ll be in WDW 7/13-16. I’m getting nervous!
DFB Sarah says
Kim, we will update on lines and crowd levels on July 11 (and 12), so hopefully you’ll get a sense from that. Stick with DFB! Good luck!
Holly says
Any idea how they plan to handle the Guest Assistance Pass? It sounds like it might be difficult, if Fast Past entrances are closed.
Rachael Humphrey says
It says that ride opened in August 2019 but I was there in September and I think it opened in December.
Julie says
So are all rides on reservations? As of right bow looks like first day our family can go is in Sept. Are you going to do any days before then for florida residences only? We are Florida residences?
DFB Sarah says
Julie, we haven’t heard anything about Florida Resident previews, just Annual Pass previews. Disney has indicated all rides will be Standby, as they’re not using FastPass+ or Boarding Groups when the Parks reopen. We will update if that changes.
DFB Sarah says
Thanks, Rachael.
DFB Sarah says
Holly, we don’t know how Disney will handle the Disability Access Service. Disney has confirmed the service will be available with reopening, but we will have to see how that’s handled on-site when the Parks reopen. FastPass entrances were described as being use to extend the regular lines in order to promote physical distancing, but since they’ve confirmed DAS will be available, I expect they’ll have a plan for that. (I hope!)
Rachel S. says
And word on if rider swap will be avaliable?
DFB Sarah says
Rachel, I chatted with Disney about this yesterday. The rep said she thinks yes, but there’s been no official word, and she’s not sure how it’ll work because FP lines are being used for Standby distancing. When our team is in the Parks, I’ll try to get confirmation.
Steve says
Even with a significant decrease in crowds, the popular rides will obviously still have longer ques. But at least you have a chance to ride Rise of the Resistance, rather than “roll the dice” and hope to get a boarding pass like before. Flight of Passage has always had a lengthy wait time, so I would expect ROTR to be the same. All part of the “fun”!
DFB Sarah says
Steve, all the more reason to use the Play Disney Parks app? No? 🙂
