Due to the global health crisis, a face mask is becoming an essential piece of clothing right up there with a Disney spirit jersey and a cute Loungefly backpack, especially when at Walt Disney World.
If you’re like us, you were SUPER excited when Disney released their character face masks a few months ago. After all, if you have to wear a face mask, it might as well have Baby Yoda on it. 😉 Well, it definitely took a little while for the shopDisney masks to ship, and when they did — some folks were a little disappointed.
So what’s the problem? Well…lots of guests who received their masks started to notice they run VERY small. A medium mask, which for most mask types would comfortably fit most adults, was almost painfully tight around one of our team member’s ears! And the small masks we received were WAY too small even for our six-year old mask tester (they’re basically infant masks).
Most of the masks listed on the shopDisney site have a rating between one and three stars out of five. Yikes. Complaints range with most of them focusing on sizing and comfort issues. So, if your shopDisney masks have arrived and are leaving you a little disappointed — here’s what you can do!
Ask shopDisney for a Refund
First off, you can ask shopDisney for a refund.
According to the shopDisney return policy, they will gladly exchange, refund, or credit the purchase directly from shopDisney if returned within 30 days of the shipping date. But our readers have had varied experiences with the masks, specifically. We’ve heard two scenarios so far. First, one reader let us know that shopDisney told her to dispose of the masks and they refunded the cost. The second reader told us that they were sent a $25 gift card to replace the cost of the masks.
So, if you tried your mask on and decided it wasn’t for you, you should be able to get your cost refunded by shopDisney in cash or store credit.
For any questions or concerns about returning your masks, you can reach out to shopDisney directly at (800) 328-0368 or via an email form.
See If You Can Alter It
If refunds don’t work for you, see if you can make some alterations so that it hits the mark a little better. If the body of the mask is too small, sew (or ask a friend who can sew) to add on some extra coverage. Then you get to keep the fun design while still getting the fit you’re looking for!
If the elastics are the problem, there are a few solutions you can try. For one, you can try to extend the loops by attaching cloth or elastic to the existing loops to give them more size, or create a behind-the-head tie mask. There are also some products that can help with comfort issues!
You can pick up some ear hooks to help take the pressure off of your ears so that the weight of the mask sits against the back of your head or some ear protectors to give the mask a more cushioned feel.

Gift the Mask to Someone Else
So, if you can’t refund them, and no matter the alterations (maybe you are totally NOT a professional seamstress and don’t even want to bother!) that Baby Yoda mask is just NOT sitting comfortably on your face, think about gifting it to someone else! We all need masks right now, and everyone has their preferences. Maybe a too small mask is just right for one of your kids or a friend.
Wash your mask and ask around! You might make someone’s day and get the masks off your hands!
Do Some Research and Get a Better Mask
So, what to do when the shopDisney masks are out of your hands? It’s time to get a better mask! Figure out what kind of mask will suit YOU best. For instance, if ear pain is an issue, opt for a mask with elastic that goes around the head instead, or swing for a gaiter style mask if you don’t like the straps at all!
We’ve taken a SERIOUS look into what the best type of mask is to wear in a theme park all day. If you wanted these masks for your return to Disney, then you’ll want to take a look at how to find the best and most comfortable mask to wear ALL DAY! Even if your foray into shopDisney masks was a bust, you can still find a mask that’s cute AND comfortable if you look around!

I got a shopDisney credit for my tiny tiny smalls…

I’ve only received my large size Marvel masks so far & while sizing is ok the sewing finish is AWFUL! Two of the 4 have an ugly raw edge which is extremely noticeable on the Hulk mask since it’s the lightest color. Very disappointed in the quality. I’m sure the next 3 shipments of the other designs won’t be much better. Sad.

We received our masks this past week. I had ordered the Large size. They all fit very well – both my husband & I tried on several of the different ones. We got 3 different sets and all fit well and appeared to be very well made. I would recommend that ANY adult will want to order the Large size.
Melissa says
I’m curious. If the medium-sized mask was too small for the adult tester you mentioned in your article how did the large size fit, if an attempt was made? Also, did your six-year-old tester attempt a larger size (medium) if the small size was too tight? I was planning on getting the large size for my husband and me. We have twin three-year-olds, so I was thinking of getting them the medium size. I had already read numerous complaints that the small size was way too small. Thanks!
Katie says
Has anyone been able to exchange or order a different size with credit? I really want the Star Wars ones but pre-ordered medium when it sounds like large would have been better 😕
Snow's mom says
I still haven’t received mine. I ordered 2 sets of the large and 2 sets of the mediums. It’s too late to cancel the mediums. I hope Shop Disney is fair when it’s time to send the masks back.
Jenn says
I still haven’t received mine, ordered them soooo long ago. Hopefully they will be dispatched soon.
In fairness to Disney they gave a size measurement guide on the site when ordering. Going by what they had I knew to order a large for my 7 year old. They went by length of mid nose to chin so hopefully it’s ok 🤞
Angela says
I have yet to receive mine. It makes me a little ticked off that Im still waiting for them, when i can obviously go and get it. Why is it taking so long? I ordered them at the end of April. Wth? I was told i wouldn’t get them until mid July. Really? Thats obviously not true if there are some in Disney Springs and elsewhere.
David Campbell says
Don’t think that this will fit kids if they don’t fit adults. Keep in mind that a human skull grows to 80% it’s adult size by 2 years old and 90% by 5 years old.
Kristi Eubanks says
I pre-ordered mine the day they became available back in March. Yesterday, I received an alert from credit card company of a charge on shopdisney. I had a mild panic attack because I knew I hadn’t purchased anything there (at least not this past week). Oh my gosh was my account hacked?! I checked my order history on the website and the charge was for my masks from months ago! Now I’m worried that they won’t fit. I order the large because I have a big head (7 3/8 hat size). I may have to return them and find something on Etsy.

I ordered masks for all our family members across three different states on May 16th, haven’t heard a word, not even an “it’s being made” email. Complete silence from Disneyland. They should had been more upfront with the “wait time”. If I had known it would take more then two months to get these made in China, I would have just gone to our local fabric store and made some. I too am now worried about the sizing.
Sari says
I just received my masks and they run small. I ordered small, medium and large. The small seems to fit a doll and not my kid. The medium which was the one ordered for me doesn’t fit. The large is more comfortable for me but not my husband. I ordered them based on the size chart and is way off. Emailed ShopDisney to see what are my options. Its frustrating waiting so much time to receive something and you can’t use it.

I received the masks I ordered on 4/30 in the mail 7/16. During that time I had been to Disney Springs numerous times since they opened and visited all 4 parks. All of those places were fully stocked in masks and filled with people wearing them. I read here when the masks started being received that they were very small so I went to check them out at Disney Springs. They were a horrible. I called shopDisney and told them to cancel the order at the end of June and was told they were about to be shipped and couldn’t be cancelled. I received an email saying they were being shipped 3 weeks after that and although the customer service rep at shop Disney said they were aware of the issue and my masks would be the resized version they were tiny and the same as found everywhere else. I went and check the website the Medium were now listed as Youth Medium, a sleezy move. They were listed as Medium when I purchased them for tiny women. I had already waited a long time on hold weeks ago and called again yesterday only to be stuck in a waiting room before I could access my order. I called was told there was a 30 minute wait and was on hold 38 minutes when the music stopped, sounded like I was about to be connected and then had dead air for 10 minutes before being disconnected. Tried calling back it was over 60 minutes wait time and gave up. We love Disney for the customer service. I’m not feeling it this time.

Ordered mediums because that seemed reasonable. Nope. Out of two sets so far, one in each kinda fits me, and none of them fit hubby or my teen daughter. They’re wildly inconsistent, they used a non-stretch stuck on the somewhat stretch fabric, and they all smell of the heat transferred ink. My third set will eventually show up, also the wrong size. I’m going to keep the ones that kinda fit, alter them to tie, and mail the rest to my sister. Thank goodness I wasn’t counting on these.
Meg says
I ordered mine back on 4/30 and still have not heard anything about them being shipped?
donna wilkinson says
i order three mask and they didn’t fit was to small .
Maya G. says
I ordered mine on 5/1, but didn’t receive them until this Monday, 7/20. My card was charged about a month prior to them being shipped out. I ordered a size large for me and medium for my mom. Other medium sized masks fit her perfectly whereas the Disney medium fit her tight. It sucks because now we’re stuck with a set of masks she can’t use. I don’t feel comfortable having her use something that’s going to sit tight on her face as an all day thing. The large contour my face perfectly, except of course the ear loops are too short. They tug on my ears and while I haven’t used one the entire day, I’m not sure how comfortable these will be. Such a bummer too because they took forever in shipping with very little communication.
Tracy says
I finally was able to get through to shopDisney customer service. After sending emails, waiting on long holds, once getting disconnected after 40 minutes and others just giving up I called and got a message offering a call back instead of sitting on hold. I explained that the masks were too small, they must be dealing with it all day, was told to donate the masks and I was being credited the full amount. I ordered two sets, I was determined not to waste $50 (with shipping) on a manufacturing error. It’s worth giving them a call.
Lenora Brennan says
I just wrote to Disney as the size small did not fit my five year old grandson. It was insanely small. I am very annoyed at the waste of $25 and the two month wait!
Bonnie says
Try washing the masks, stretching them out, especially the ear elastic and letting them air dry. This worked for my husband’s masks.
Kammie says
Received half of my order today. I ordered mediums for small framed adults. TOO small. I am going to try and stop the shipment of the rest of my order. If I can’t do that then I will “refuse to accept” the next package.
Joanne Crandell says
Ordered an adult medium. Looks great but its way too small
Rose says
Disappoited. Ordered large but masks are too small. Ordered 2 sets because it was a fund raiser.
Rose says
Disappointed.
Vic says
Ordered two sets and both were too small. Called them up and they gave me the equivalent amount I spent less the shipping
Ursula Seelig says
I ordered 2 sets of large. They all ran smaller than I thought they’d be; the baby Yoda in particular was very small. I figured I’d bring it with me when I went and give it to a random kid. I machine washed them all and tried to stretch them as much as I could while they were damp and then dried them on a flat surface. They’re still pretty snug across the ears and I’m not sure I can wear them all day without my ears getting sore. But I can wear them elsewhere where i only need a mask for a shorter period of time. Just FYI, they don’t have the metal nosepiece that allows better fitting across the nose. If I’d known I could get a refund, I might have done that but I had seen other mask manufacturers who said no returns. Too late now, I think.
Nancy Swanson says
The masks run way too small. Don’t buy these.
MONTE says
Artical recommends gator masks which are banned from parks.
Mildred Varela says
I ordered 2 sets and they are too small. I gave a set away to young kids and plan on giving away the 2nd set because they are small and the elastic make my ears look like Dumbos
Tami Baker says
I haven’t received my toy story set I ordered. No one answers emails. My co worker has been calling like crazy about exchanging her masks for larger ones and no one ever answers the call. She has sat on hold for over 2 hours.
Kay Litt says
I, too, received masks that were far too small (size Small did not fit my 3-year-old, who is below average in head circumference, and size Large did not fit my husband), but there seems to be no way to exchange them. I have tried for several weeks to contact customer service (via both phone and email), but I have not received any answers. At this point, I believe it has been more than 30 days since shipping, so I will not be able to exchange the masks. I cannot believe I spent $40 on masks that we will not be able to use.
margaret anderson says
sent email to guest services. explained problem paid over $45.00 for these crude masks. response was we will send you a $5.00 gift card to use on Disney product.
I will tell Disney what they can do with that card. These masks are crap and since you do so much business with China YOU should know if there is a size difference between the two countries. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!! Totally insulted with this $5.00 credit. I say keep it.
Margaret Anderson
Raquel says
I emailed them twice with no response back. I gave up on them responding to me.
Nicole says
I pop the ear seam loops as soon as I get mine and it fits way better than before. It’s the stitching that doesn’t have give on the ears than rather the size of the mask itself.
Lorraine says
I bought a few disney face mask , size large and they are too big. The package says no refunds or exchanges. I tried shrinking them but it didnt work. I’m just going to try to alter them.
Jessica says
Bought an “Adult Large” in the park for my mom last month and it was so tight on her, the elastic bent her ears and kept sliding off and the cloth, although it covered her mouth, was surprisingly small. She’s an average sized woman, 5’5 and not at all overweight – I would expect anything labeled Large to fit her and then some! I was sure I must have grabbed a child mask by accident but I checked the packaging and it definitely said Large. We ended up giving it to a 10 year old friend of the family and it fit him perfectly. Do not recommend purchasing these for adults.
