Disney World’s phased reopening of its theme parks is just under two weeks away and continues to move forward, but Disneyland has postponed its July 17th grand reopening while it awaits guidelines from state officials.
And while Disney hasn’t and won’t be generating anywhere close to the pre-closure levels of revenue in the Parks, Experience, and Products sector for a while, CEO Bob Chapek noted that the company would not reopen any park unless it would ultimately generate profit.
We’ve already shared with you how many guests Disney will need to stay in the black once the theme parks reopen, otherwise, the company could actually lose even more money by reopening. We also know Disney will capping its attendance for the foreseeable future, requiring guests to obtain both a park ticket and reservation using the new Disney Park Pass system before visiting the parks.
But due to the upward trend in cases, there is growing concern that the theme parks might be reopening too soon. In fact, the Wall Street Journal has just reported the findings of a survey that was conducted earlier this month in which 2,000 U.S. consumers were asked if they would visit a Disney park this year. Almost two-thirds said they would only think about going to Disney if a vaccine existed.
There will be a number of new health and safety procedures implemented at the theme parks upon their reopening, including limited capacity, modified attractions and entertainment offerings, required face coverings for guests and Cast Members, mandatory temperature screenings to enter, increased sanitation, social distancing markers, and more. But despite Disney’s best efforts to keep its guests and Cast Members safe, it seems the majority agree that until there’s a vaccine, the parks will not be able to reach a normal pre-closures attendance level making Disney’s road to financial recovery even longer.

Would you visit the Disney parks before a vaccine? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
R says
This is all getting way out of hand.
Over 99% of people that get infected SURVIVE. No government can force a vaccine and we will NOT step foot back in Disney ever again if they even thought about making that required to enter.
Mike money says
Well that is just the type of foot we don’t want in the park getting everyone else sick… And the article doesn’t say they would require it…. Just that they won’t be able to do the crazy volume of people like they normally allow in…
C. COJN says
Hi I will go to Disney Park once it reopens. I would not attend if a vaccine were required.
Melissa says
We LOVE Disney and already have two reservations for upcoming trips (Aug/Sep) but I WILL NOT subject myself or my family to these so-called vaccines…
Jack says
Crowds will self limit as long as the current requirements are maintained. People will not return to Disney in large numbers wearing a mask. Universal is laying off employees and soon Disney will be closing as well. The fact that people are being forced to wear a mask tells you people don’t want to wear one and see no benefit from it. Look at what the virus with a near 99% survival rate has already done to society.
G says
This is dumb. Vaccines take 5-7 years to perfect, but this is already subsiding. Fear mongering and hysteria is overblowing this ‘crisis’ that has a death rate lower than the flu. (Especially if you take out all the deaths attributed to mid management and nursing home being used as covid hospitals!). A vaccine will not be the answer..
Tiffany says
My state of Texas has a 2 week quarantine once we enter Florida right now. I cannot see how that is even possible for people. And I just replanned my vacation for like the 3rd time. Keep the updates coming.
Christina says
I can’t wait to start planning Disney trips again – once there’s a vaccine. (And I’m really hoping Disney does make it mandatory for most people to have one, in order to protect the little ‘uns and others who can’t be vaccinated.) If everyone could be counted on to do right by everyone else I might be less inclined to wait, but there are far too many selfish souls out there concerned solely with their wants and I am NOT willing to risk my health or my family’s.
Erin says
Many people survive with what may be lifelong problems. This is a new, novel virus and scientists are working as hard and as fast as they can to understand it, however some of what they are seeing is really scary. I, for one, do not want to catch COVID-19 if it is humanly possible. I certainly do not want my children exposed to it. Don’t want a vaccination, fine, but stay home where your decisions don’t potentially impact other people’s lives. I just read an article that said it is unlikely that the United States can achieve herd immunity because of the selfishness of our people. You make a conscious choice, but people with underlying conditions they have no control over, and people who have an actual medical reason why they can’t get a vaccination, should not have to life in a bubble forever because of that choice.
Lucille Mislivets says
My husband and I get a “FLU Shot” every year. If a Covid 19 vaccine is required, no problem, as we will get that too!
Paul Alter says
The only way the human population has hit herd immunity with a disease in the last 100 years has been through vaccines. That’s simply a statement of fact. And it sure looks like the only way Disney is going to be able to go back to pre-pandemic operations is when there’s a vaccine that’s been distributed enough that herd immunity is achieved.
Personally, I would welcome Disney requiring a proof of vaccination to come to their parks fully open. In fact, I’d book a trip so fast the internet wires would heat up from my activity! 🙂 Disney is a private company and can set their own policies as long as they are consistent the laws. They can’t force a guest to get a vaccine. But they can certainly say you can’t come and play without one. And they can also require their cast members to be vaccinated, as long as they follow certain laws and work with the unions.
Jim Anthony says
R: Disney did not say they would check for vaccines. However if one is available in January then they can assume that most sensible people would get on and therfore it would be safer for more people. If you don’t want to get one, that’s your choice. Also, your numbers are way off. 5% of people who get the virus die. Remember, these deaths are in addition to deaths by influenza.
Malinda McDonough says
I will not go if we are forced to have a vaccine. Immunities are what we need. Also please do not say that I am selfish. I feel that our kids will suffer for this shut down with their immunities. This is my believe please respect it!
Ann says
I don’t think Disney will require a vaccine—they just want the option out there. They just want it available to go back to crowd levels pre-pandemic. And if you get sick or someone in your family get sick and die, Disney do not want to be held liable for your choices, because the ones caterwauling the loudest about what they ‘won’t’ do and blah blah blah, will be the first ones trying to drag Disney into court for their own bad decisions.
Mike says
I’ve seen many reports that State non symptomatic people suffer irreversible lung damage from coved-19…….what do all you naysayers have to say about that??? Survival but permanently compromised is OK I guess?
Alexis says
Bottom line is that cases in Florida are skyrocketing, especially Orange County and that is why masks are now mandatory for everyone in Orange County.
Christine Joll says
I will not attend if a vaccine is required. I attended in 2019-great vigilance-many many things done to prevent infectious disease.
Jen Barker says
I’m finding it difficult to understand the US public’s resistance to having a Covid-19 vaccination jab. I hope this isn’t typical. Until the world is mostly vaccinated there will be no chance of eradicating this very unpleasant virus. It would be very sensible for Disney not to accept guests unless they have proof of being vaccinated.
Eileen says
It is called freedom. Vaccines are a choice. Not everyone gets the flu vaccine and people die from the flu. No one is required to get the flu vaccine. It is a choice. It is time for the world to get over themselves. There will always be viruses their will always be illness. We can make choices and live or die or stay well or get sick. Life happens. % ofTotal number of deaths based on population in us have consistently gone down since 1939 and has not increased with covid included in figures. Life and death happen. It is nature. People are living a lot longer. You can’t stop death. It comes eventually. Stop being afraid. Let people live their lives as they see fit. If you are afraid you should be the one to shelter in. There are germs everywhere. There are viruses everywhere. The worst thing you can do for immunity is to shelter in. Get out in the world live your life enjoy it because one day you will die of something. Protect yourself if you want but don’t try to dictate others lives. You are not entitled to know anything about my life my medical care or my vaccines. We are supposed to be free in this country and we are entitled to our privacy and that includes what vaccines we get. You don’t want our moneyclose down your business and go hide in your house. Sorry but this is getting ridiculous.
Paul says
Eileen, you might want to look at the Supreme Court rulings that say no, it’s not always a choice. SCOTUS previously ruled that, with few exceptions, everyone in the US was required to get a measles vaccination. And the Supreme Court is the final arbiter of interpretation and meaning of the Constitution.
You’re rights end when they harm others. Even the most conservative of SCOTUS benches have consistently ruled that way.
