We all know it. Disney fans go CRAZY for great Disney merchandise.
Whenever Disney decides to drop an online release of something limited-edition or high demand, folks FLOCK to make sure they get the goods. For shopDisney, this has caused a bunch of technical issues in the past like wonky virtual queues and more. Now, there’s a way to make sure you don’t have to deal with those issues — with your chance at the shopDisney MerchPass.
Okay, bear with us here because this is a little confusing. When we got on shopDisney to check out what’s new today, we spotted something interesting. As you may know, the Arendelle Castle is next to be released in the limited-edition Disney Castle Collection. Now, that listing comes accompanied with a notice about the new Disney MerchPass.
The MerchPass is a drawing that gives you the chance of getting early access to purchase some of the highest demand items on shopDisney. For items equipped with the MerchPass (like the Arendelle collection), you choose your items (one entry per drawing but each item has its own drawing), check your email, and if you’re selected you can complete your purchase!
For the first-ever MerchPass for the Arendelle Castle, entries begin on July 13th. Those selected for the merch pass will be notified in their email by 5PM PST on July 16th. Then, there’s a limited window during which those selected can log in to shopDisney and find their selected items in their bag. You can get all the specific details on this new early access pass here.
According to Disney, “If your entry is not selected, you will not receive the early access purchase opportunity for the product. These products may be offered for sale at shopDisney and/or in the Disney store at a later date.” To us, this sounds like people looking to purchase the collection that are not chosen for the MerchPass may not be guaranteed that opportunity. We will keep you updating on all the details after we experience this process for the first time.
This certainly seems like an interesting solution to help alleviate the rush to the website when these high demand items go live, but we’re not sure about how well it will work in practice. We’ll have to see it in action! Keep an eye on DFB for all of the latest Disney updates!

This is all in response to those damn web bots that make 1000,s of purchases in seconds and lock everyone out of the system. Then minutes later it’s all on eBay.
I’ve researched. If I really wanted to be shady, I could buy a web bot for $43 from a reputable programmer. They are very accessible and easy to use. Just a chrome browser extension.
So the problem with this lottery system is, as long as you have a verified account, you can put one entry into the lottery.
But these people using web bots already have multiple accounts. That’s the very root of how a web bot is used.
So they will use the bots the same way in order to enter the drawing 100’s even 1000’s of times. Which in turn will make legitimate buyers locked out of the drawing. Because the rule of percentages says, the more times you enter the more times you’ll win.
What they need to do is just use their army of Computer science engineers and block the webots from doing their thing. And get more server power running on release days.
But first fix the web bot access.

Entered drawing – not selected. Guess the true collectors are out of luck again! So frustrating – at least before I had a chance.

I’m not a fan of the merchpass. I have been collecting the Minnie Mouse main attraction series and trying to build the collection for my daughter but my name wasn’t chosen to purchase the Peter Pan plush! I’m so disappointed

You can still get the pins.
There are hundreds of people on eBay selling 1000’s of their spare pin.
Some are actually pretty cheap. Surprisingly.
I think I saw one as low as $200
That’s not too shabby.
(Tongue-in-cheek of course)

Merch Pass is a major failure. People selling on EBay have 20 or more while average collectors can’t get even one. Disney changed the buying procedure after the first 5 months of the Minnie Main Attraction collection. Now people can’t complete the collections they started and are very upset.

If people stop buying Disney on Ebay then maybe it would keep them buying up Disney items. It will give collectors a chance to but online at Disney at regular price instead of 100% markup which is ridiculous.
If they do not buyers then they will not sell.
