Power up your lightcycle — we’re one step closer to being able to race on the Grid!
We’ve been carefully watching all of the construction going on over by TRON Lightcycle Run in Magic Kingdom. Today, we got an update on the progress from Walt Disney Imagineering and we’re SO excited!
TRON Lightcycle Run is a new, high-speed attraction that is coming to Tomorrowland in Magic Kingdom. This new ride will be very similar to its counterpart in Shanghai Disneyland.
The ride vehicle itself is similar to a bike (sort of like the vehicles used at Avatar Flight of Passage). During your ride on this coaster, the vehicles will reach speeds up to 59 miles per hour as you race around!
We’ve seen lots of progress in terms of the construction of the attraction. As you walk near this area in Magic Kingdom, you can now see some of the external track and the attraction’s show building.
Today, we spotted another construction update — this time from Walt Disney Imagineer Zach Riddley, who posted some photos on his Instagram of the first canopy piece being installed at TRON Lightcycle Run! According to Riddley’s post, it was installed this morning.
Riddley noted that this first piece is “one of nearly 40 pieces that will create a dramatic ‘curved wave’ canopy, known as the Upload Conduit, which will flow organically over Guests as they race underneath on their Lightcycles.”
Later, Walt Disney Imagineering shared the same photos via their Instagram, and noted that “a new milestone has been achieved” in the construction of the TRON attraction with the installation of this first canopy piece. You can see the canopy featured in the concept art for the TRON attraction.
And, this is what part of the canopy looks like over in Shanghai Disneyland’s version of the ride. It truly is one of the most visually stunning parts of this attraction.
Although Disney did not list TRON Lightcycle Run as one of the construction projects it is “prioritizing” during its recent participation in a virtual conference, we have seen construction progressing here, and we expect to continue seeing construction updates in the future. It is currently slated to open in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 2021. We’ll keep an eye out for more updates on TRON Lightcycle Run and let you know what we find!
