Despite limited capacity at the Disney World theme parks, getting a boarding group to ride Star Wars:Â Rise of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios continues to be a challenge.
Some changes have been made to the boarding group sign-up experience to make it easier, and another change may be on the horizon that could increase the capacity of the ride!Â
Currently, you can only board Rise of the Resistance if you manage to get a boarding group when they are released at 10AM and 2PM each day. According to the Orlando Sentinel, a Disney World spokeswoman has noted that “This setup gives ride operations flexibility and ends early gathering of crowds.”
One factor that necessarily limits the number of people who can ride Rise each day is the ride vehicles themselves. The vehicles each have two rows of four people across, meaning they can seat eight guests, but under the current restrictions, due to the pandemic, only one party is being loaded per vehicle. That means, even if you’re just a party of 1, you’ll be getting a vehicle all to yourself.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that a Disney spokeswoman has now said, however, that Disney “Recently tested an update to the ride vehicles and had [a] Plexiglas barrier between the first and second rows.” The spokeswoman indicated that Disney is “working toward introducing this to all the vehicles.”
As the Orlando Sentinel notes, This change could very quickly increase Rise of the Resistance’s daily capacity as it would allow more guests to ride per vehicle (no more one-on-one rides with just you vs. Kylo Ren). But, there are other concerns also affecting Rise of the Resistance including the technical complexity of the systems and animatronics used on the ride which can create shutdowns. Still, the ability to place more guests on each vehicle and potentially increase capacity could be very beneficial.
Recently, we’ve seen plexiglass installed at the Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror, and it has been in place at DINOSAUR in Disney’s Animal Kingdom for some time as well. We’ll keep an eye out for more news and let you know if we see this change or any other changes come to attractions around Disney World!

They way they have this set up now to get a boarding group at 20 or 2 is horrible, let’s say that again HORRIBLE, I tried 6 times in September, system crashed 2 of those times. By 10:00 it’s full. Everyone, we’re talking about 1000’s of pet at one time trying for a boarding group. They need to go back when it first opened. First come first serve till boarding groups are full.

You definitely be prepared for disappointment when trying to book a boarding pass for this ride. I was in Studios on the 18th and 23rd of October. In the park well before 10:00 and had the app up and ready a few minutes before 10:00. I started refreshing constantly and both days, when the Join button appeared (right at 10am) I let my party load, then hit join and…BOTH DAYS…received a red box telling me that no groups were available. So, on both mornings, all 10am boarding groups were gone in less than 10 seconds. Getting a boarding pass was a complete LuckFest. They tell you to just try again at 2pm, but depending on how many groups have boarded between 10am-2pm, there may be very little availability left and you are still competing with most of the park at 2pm as well.
So, again…be aware…under the current situation, you could be in Hollywood Studios for the full 9 hours the park is open and not get a chance to ever ride this attraction.
It is a SPECTACULAR attraction, but the current method to try and get on it is Extremely Disappointing. On Oct 18th, after the 2pm window opened/closed in seconds, there were PLENTY of upset families talking to cast members near the ride. Apparently, this is a daily scenario they are dealing with. Bleh!

Maybe, just maybe… If all of the Disney bloggers would stop yanking all of the boarding group spots from actual visitors, it wouldn’t be so difficult for all of us “regular guests” from being able to ride! Sheesh.

April 12 and 15, no luck on the darn virtual que. To say I am irritated is to put it mildly……I tried with both I phone 5g and android 4g….made some type of contact once and got booted off system. Very very very very disappointing. Asked employees if I was doing everything right and was told it is like a radio station call in…IT SUCKS when you are coming from any distance and this is the result.
