Sometimes things go wrong in Disney World.
We’ve seen countless animatronic malfunctions, and boats have sunk with guests in them, but today there was an incident that caused the evacuation of TWO attractions!
Today, as we were enjoying the opening number of the Country Bear Jamboree show, the lights turned on and there was an announcement telling guests to evacuate.
We later found out that there was a small fire in the kitchen of Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe! This caused both the Country Bear Jamboree and the Tiki Room to be evacuated. The fire at the restaurant was not visible to any guests, a Cast Member told us that was the reason for the evacuation and the long line at the Tiki Room.
If we learn anymore about this incident, we will be sure to update you, so stay tuned!

“Stuff” happens, even in the Happiest Place on Earth, but Disney is absolutely fanatical about the safety of their guests. It’s extremely unlikely that Disney World will ever have a fire that involves space beyond where it starts because every building there is fully equipped with an automatic fire sprinkler system, very carefully designed and maintained. It’s very likely Pecos Bill had a kitchen griddle fire that was quickly put out by a special type of fire suppression system for cooking surfaces. Such systems are interconnected with the local fire alarm system and evacuation of potentially affected spaces is mandatory.
Because central Florida is the lightning capital of the world, with more hits per square mile than almost any place on Earth, protection from lightning is another top priority. A careful observer can see all the lightning rods on Walt Disney World structures, plus extensive bonding and grounding of metal surfaces like railings, etc. And they have weather radar to watch for approaching lightning threats, which is why some rides may be shut down and guests ushered from pools when they don’t yet hear thunder approaching.
I had great friends in the local “government” for all Walt Disney World properties, responsible for overall safety and security there. It’s called the Reedy Creek Improvement District and, legally, is much like the Port of New York Authority. Key members of the RCID staff were (are) widely acclaimed safety experts and active participants in national organizations that develop ANSI / UL / NFPA standards for safety. You can take comfort in all the attention Disney puts on guest safety.
