Ah, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.
The most popular attraction in Disney’s Hollywood Studios has seen a LOT of changes to its boarding groups — which, in case ya didn’t know, are required to get on the ride! You can snag a spot at 7AM from outside of the park, or at 1PM from inside Hollywood Studios…or so you thought. A change to how these boarding groups work just made that 1PM queue way easier for you!
Like we mentioned, you previously had to be physically inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios to get a boarding group at 1PM. But now, that’s not the case! Guests can now join that 1PM group from anywhere on Disney property, as long as they tapped into Hollywood Studios earlier that day. So theoretically, you could tap into Hollywood Studios in the morning, leave for lunch, and still join that 1PM group from wherever you may be!
Of course, we had to test out this new feature. We started our morning in Hollywood Studios, but by 1PM we were way outside of the park. As in, far far away.
And guess what? We were still able to grab a boarding group!
We should note that the information on the app does not specify this little workaround. In fact, the language is pretty vague, but we’re here to tell ya that this works! As long as you tap into Hollywood Studios at some point beforehand, you do not need to be in the park to get a 1PM boarding group.
We did chat with some Cast Members and they confirmed this switch. But we’ll let you know if anything changes! We want to thank one of our DFB readers for clueing us into this update. We hope this little tweak makes a BIG difference for you if you’re on a mission to get a boarding group! Best of luck to ya.

I was told this is nothing new and has been the case for awhile now. Can you please confirm?
Sarah C says
We did not know about this little work around but just happened upon it by accident on Tuesday! We went to HS in the morning, left around lunch and at 1pm got a boarding group from the comfort of our room at AKL! We boarded at 4:15pm and holy cow it was awesome.
tara says
what do you mean by “tap” into the park? just be physically in the part or do i have to do something?
Jess says
Oh good. Even more people competing for a tiny number of spots. Boarding groups were gone in less than one second when we were there in January. 😔
DFB Sarah says
Tara, when we say “tap” into the park, we mean scan your MagicBand or card on the tapstile at the park entrance. That should let the system know you’re in the park and make the queue available.
DFB Sarah says
DisMom, we heard about it and confirmed this week.

I got a 1:00 boarding pass from our room at the Swan on Tuesday. Walked into the line at 7:15pm. We were the last people in and the ride immediately shut down. At 8:30 we were escorted out the back of the ride and park because park was closed and ride not repaired. Given a fast pass for the next day but not for that ride and you can’t even get a ticket to get into that park. Same exact thing happened in February. Tried today twice to get family in and shut out both times. Grand kids so sad and parents disappointed. Feel like such a failure or punished by God! So frustrating.
Mechelle says
IMO, this makes it harder to get, not easier. Now even more people will be trying to get a boarding group at 1:00 so it will be even more difficult to get than it was before. 🤷🏻♀️😡
J M says
But, you still need to have been present in the park at some point prior to 1 PM, correct?
DFB Sarah says
JM, that’s correct.
Diane says
We were in Hollywood Stuidos on Thursday the 15th. We did the 1pm thing and got a back up pass of group 150, we got on. But I will say, even with the social distancing… they could fit a lot more people on this ride. They have the plastic divider in the cars, but it was just the 3 of us in the front seat. The ride was epic and I would have been fine sharing the car.
bill says
the whole system is ridiculous, disney has made this so the majority of guests cant even go on a themepark ride anymore, why they even bothered adding something that most cant use is beyond me, just way too complicated and too much work, it shouldn’t have to be. They really weren’t thinking, and this totally alienates guests, I just think its wrong on so many levels.
Jodi says
So if you “tap in” & don’t intend to stay, because you don’t get a boarding pass at 7 am, you still cannot park hop until 1 pm right?
DFB Sarah says
Jodi, you can Park Hop starting at 2PM, and you’re right: if you tap in but don’t plan or want to stay, you’ll have to pass time until PH starts at two.
Kailey says
Hi- do you still have to have a park reservation for Hollywood Studios in order to tap in? I can’t get a reservation for any of the days I will be there so I am guessing I still won’t be able to have a chance to join the virtual que?
Thank you!
DFB Sarah says
Kailey, you do still need a DPP to tap into the Park. Keep checking for one; the availability can change.
Tiffany ward says
So is it still where you can try for the boarding que at 7am from your hotel room too or do you have to now be physically in the park? Understand have to have been in park to try for 1pm que. Coming in June.
DFB Sarah says
Tiffany, for the 7AM Boarding Pass, you can be outside of the Park, but you need to have a Disney Park Pass for Hollywood Studios.
Brigette Megill says
On May 1st, I got a 1pm boarding pass on my way to Hollywood Studios from my house in South Florida. I didn’t get to Hollywood Studios until about 2pm, so I don’t think you even have to be in or near Hollywood Studios to get a pass. I tried March 13th to get a boarding pass on property for 1pm and I didn’t get one.
Rachel says
We tried to book a boarding pass at 7 am and it was gone in less than a second. I’ve heard mixed things about prep for it like turn Disney WiFi off and only pick one person in your group because it gives you a better chance. I don’t know if these are true but I did turn off my WiFi but at the end, it told me something went wrong 😑
