We’ve been following Disneyland’s phased reopening very carefully.
The parks reopened with limited operations and capacity on April 30th, and since then, we’ve slowly seen more experiences return. Now, during the DisneylandForward conference, we’ve gotten a better idea of what capacity and regulations could look like in the future.
The state of California is currently operating on a tiered system, which dictates restrictions in place for each county based on factors such as infection rates.
Currently, Orange County (where Disneyland is located) is in the orange tier. That means theme parks are restricted at 25% capacity. However, according to Disney, all signs show that on May 19th, Orange County should move into the yellow tier.
Counties are expected to have “yellow tier” case and testing numbers for 2 weeks before officially moving into that tier. Orange County has already completed one of those weeks and is expected to complete the other one this week, as long as their numbers don’t shift dramatically.
Aside from a “green tier” full reopening, the yellow tier is the least restrictive tier. The primary effect this shift will have on Disneyland is the ability to increase capacity from 25% to 35%. So, assuming Orange County successfully completes their second week of “yellow tier” numbers, Disneyland could increase to 35% capacity as soon as May 19th.
However, when asked if Disneyland would sell more tickets once capacity increased, the Director of External Affairs of Disneyland Resort responded that the “answer is unclear.” We’ll keep you posted as we learn more on that.
California’s tiered system is being eliminated altogether on June 15th, which is the state’s target date for a “full reopening.” On that date, the entire state will move together into a final green tier, which will permit “normal” operations — alongside mask-wearing, continued vaccinations, and testing. There will be no state-mandated capacity requirements for businesses or theme parks.
These target dates are all highly subject to change, so we’ll be sure to keep you posted with any updates — especially as they pertain to your Disney vacation. Stay tuned to DFB!
