Avengers Campus is opening THIS Friday in Disney California Adventure, and we stopped by recently for a preview!
We’ve had some tasty bites from all the new dining spots, checked out the new merchandise, and now it’s finally time to try our hand at slinging some webs with Spider-Man on WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure. And, let us tell ya, if you’ve ever wanted to swing from buildings with Tom Holland, this ride will be your jam! Let’s check it out!
First, we have to talk about HOW you can ride this new attraction. Similar to Rise of the Resistance in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure has a virtual queue. And, the only way to ride it is to secure yourself a boarding group — there is not a standby line.
Those who have a park pass reservation for Disney California Adventure can join at 7AM and 12PM daily through the Disneyland app, and those who have a park hopper ticket can join the virtual queue at 12PM — just be sure you’ve already entered Disneyland Park for the day. But, there is one BIG caveat to keep in mind — you CAN’T have a boarding group for Rise of the Resistance and WEB SLINGERS at the same time.
Okay, now that all the details are out of the way, let’s get to the ride, shall we?
The Queue
You’ll hop into the queue outdoors, after you choose whether you’re getting in the single rider or standby entrance (important: the single rider lines are NOT currently running!). After your boarding group is called, you’ll get into that standby line.
To the side, you’ll also see a FastPass entrance. Again, FastPass will NOT be an option when WEB SLINGERS initally opens.
You’ll weave through that outdoor line…
…and catch a glimpse at some webs.
After a few more turns…
…you’ll head inside!
Now, this is Disney we’re talking about. That means there are going to be some pretty cool Easter eggs! In the first “waiting room” inside, you’ll see a sign with 5 characters on it. Those are Peter Parker, Onome, Harley Keener, Doreen Green, and Lunella Lafayette, and they’re the engineering team for the Web Slingers!
Each person’s board highlights the contribution they made to the tech.
Of course, Peter Parker’s the one responsible for those Web-Shooters. 😉
You’ll also see lockers featuring TONS of Marvel characters, like Harley Keener. Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and Mary Jane Watson even get a nod!
And a glass-enclosed billboard features a teeny Wall-E keychain: a tribute to Imagineer Grisol Ramirez.
You’ll also get a peek at some cool (and kinda wacky) tech!
The queue is SUPER immersive, and there sure is lots to look at.
The Pre-Show
To give you some backstory to what you’re gettin’ yourself into, WEB SLINGERS features a pre-show.
The plot? You’re visiting one of WEB’s labs for an Open House, where they’re showing off their Web Slinger vehicle.
You’ll watch the Open House on a screen.
But of course, something’s gotta go wrong! And in this case, the Spider-Bots have escaped and it’s up to YOU to sling webs to catch them all for Peter Parker.
On the whiteboards in this room, you’ll spot real science equations that calculate what it actually takes to make and sling webs. Pretty cool, right?!
Elsewhere in the room, you’ll see evidence of science in action. (And hey — can ya spot that Luxo Lamp?).
Of course, there’s also a nod to Disney Imagineering! The WD-40 on the table is actually labeled WDI-1401.
Meanwhile, dial the Lucky Dog’s Pizza phone number and you’ll get a pre-recorded “This number has been disconnected.” Go on — give it a try!
Now, that we’ve taken it allll in, it’s time to head out of the room…
…pick up those 3D glasses…
…and get on the ride!
The Ride
Now we’re off to the city to help Spider-Man! Before you hop on board, a handy sign will give you ALL the steps you need to sling.
You’ll walk through a small queue to board…
…with MORE fun and science-y details!
Then, you’ll hop aboard your Web Slinger vehicle. The side doors slide open so you can sit down, but once on board, your only opening will be in the front. Restraint-wise, you’ll get a lap bar!
Here’s another look at those ride vehicles (ahem: Web Slinger vehicles).
The ride uses gesture recognition technology, so all you and your Avengers Team (aka your friends and family) will do is wave your hands and work together to rack up your group score throughout the ride.
Each Spider-Bot is worth a different point value, with gold being the highest, then green, blue, and red bots being the lowest.
As we’ve told ya before, you’re able to purchase customizable WEB Tech accessories to personalize your ride experience! You can read more about those here. Basically, they’ll give you NEW powers (think taser webs and web cannons) to help ya sweep up those Spider-Bots.
After you’ve saved the campus, you’ll get a congrats from Spider-Man — and now you’re a superhero, too!
After the ride, you’ll get to see some of the top scores from the day and see how YOU measure up.
There are a lot of hidden easter eggs and details in the game, so we’ll definitely be back to refine our web-slinging skills to unlock them all! Stay tuned to DFB for more news and updates from Avengers Campus!
