We’re BACK at Avengers Campus in Disney California Adventure (we just couldn’t stay away from that Choco-Smash CANDY Bar)!
We’ve been hangin’ out here trying all the eats, checking out the merch, and more. And now, it’s finally time to ride this land’s brand-new attraction: WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure!
Now before we dive in, we’ve gotta break down exactly what this ride is. Everyone onboard will be able to sling webs in a 3D experience, but you’re ALSO able to purchase accessories to personalize your ride experience. These are called WEB Power Bands, and they’re $34.99 apiece. They give you access to “multi-fire” mode on the ride (you CAN use just the Power Band on its own on the ride without the additional attachment!).
But we’re not done just yet. You can also buy WEB Power Band add-ons inspired by Spider-Man, Iron Man, Ghost Spider, or Rescue. These add-ons cost $29.99 each! With the Spider-Man and Ghost Spider WEB Shooter, you’ll get electro-dynamic webs on the ride. Meanwhile, the Iron Man and Rescue Repulsor Cannons give you repulsor blasts!
So you can drop $35 for just the Power Band and have special powers on the ride, but altogether, if you want to fully personalize your ride experience, you’ll have to spend $60. You can buy all of these accessories at WEB Suppliers, Backlot Premier Shop in Hollywood Land, and at outdoor kiosks in and around Avengers Campus.
What is the Ride Like With the Add-Ons?
Now it’s time to get on the ride equipped with those add-ons! We bought the WEB Power Band as well as the Spider-Man add-on. First, let’s read up on how to actually shoot and score points on the ride (instructions are located in the queue after you exit the pre-show!).
The ride vehicles are pods with an open front “window” where you can sling webs. The side will open up for you to get seated, and there’s room for four guests to be seated. Each guest will be assigned a color to keep track of their score throughout the ride.
If you go on WEB Slingers without the Power Band or the add-ons, you’ll still be able to shoot webs and score points. The ride has a series of “scenes” with increasing difficulty as the Spider-Bots multiply. It’s definitely a team effort, so the more friends you can have in your row with you, the better!
Now, each WEB Power Band comes with a few different “modes,” one of which is Attraction Mode. When switched to the proper setting, the ride vehicle will automatically recognize that you’re wearing a Power Band and will give both of your arms the capability of shooting webs or repulor blasts, depending on which attachment you have.
Once the ride begins and you’re saving Avengers Campus from the Spider-Bots, your arms move FAST. Think about Toy Story Midway Mania, only more intense! Your arms will definitely feel a little tired by the end of the ride, and the presence of the Power Band might actually bother some guests. Your arms are flying back and forth, so a big contraption strapped onto your arm can feel a little cumbersome.
As far as the ride interface itself, we’re going to be totally honest here…we didn’t notice a huge difference in our experience using the add-ons when we rode. Don’t get us wrong, wearing them definitely feels cool, like you’re “fully equipped” to properly assist Spider-Man in battling all of those Spider-Bots. But at the end of the day, it’s just as fun of a ride whether or not you’re wearing any accessories. The ride goes by quickly and there’s a lot to take in, so you might not even notice that your Power Band is giving you any sort of “special powers.”
If you’re ultimate goal is to get the highest score possible, however, then the WEB Power Band and the add-ons are necessities. The ride seems to be built in a way where it’s very hard to get as high of a score if you DON’T wear a Power Band. Plus, it’s nice that the Power Bands can be used outside of the ride too as fun toys (the WEB Shooter actually shoots out a “web” in Play Mode, the Power Band has fun projections, and the Iron Man Cannons come with foam balls to balance).
Ultimately, the add-ons are not necessary whatsoever to get a cool ride experience. You’ll be able to score points and sling webs even without ’em! Plus, there are some advanced web shooting techniques you can practice on the ride that can potentially get your score higher a bit without needing a Power Band. But if you’re looking for a way to become even more immersed, they way be worth the extra bucks.
