It’s no secret that Disney World has a LOT of merch up for grabs.
Some of it may not be worth it, while others certainly are (at least to us, anyway). But today, we’re traveling to a galaxy far, far away (aka Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge) to check out a particularly debated souvenir.
Yup, we’re talking about the Thermal Detonator Coca-Cola Bottles! Now, these little guys were once banned by the TSA, so they’re no strangers to controversy. They’re soda bottles specially created to look like thermal detonator grenades, and you can buy ’em for $6 apiece.
But is paying $6 for a soda (and a small one at that) worth it? Well, we asked our readers on Instagram! And the consensus was SPLIT, 50/50. Man are these little bottles a hot topic.
So what was our readers’ justification?! Well, a ton of you explained that yes, this souvenir’s worth it as a one-time purchase, but you wouldn’t buy one on every trip. One reader explained, “For a first trip yes! My boys LOVED them, but when we go back in February it’s gonna be a no.” Fair! Another added, “As a one time purchase reusable souvenir it’s a decent value. I’d not buy them multiple times.”
But we discovered an unusual use for these little collectibles…several of you fashioned them into Christmas ornaments! And as one reader put it, “They make a great Christmas ornament. A drink and a souvenir all under 10 bucks: win-win.” If you’re lookin’ for a fun DIY project, give this a try.
We had a few readers tell us that no, they weren’t worth it, but they bought ’em anyway (haven’t we all been guilty of something like that?!).
Others are TOTAL fans. One explained, “There’s a lot more soda in them than it looks! I was surprised when I kept sipping and the drink just kept coming out.” So we guess they’re tiny but mighty! And a BIG advocate added, “Where else in all of Disney property can you get such a deal?! A refreshing drink to quench your thirst AND a souvenir!” They bring up a pretty good point!
Then, you’ve got the camp that said NO WAY. While one reader mentioned that “they make a very cool souvenir for Star Wars fans,” if you’re not into the franchise you may consider them a waste of money. After all, if you’re not gonna keep the bottle afterward, why not just buy a regular old soda?
The consensus? A majority of our readers that voted yes explained that these Coca-Cola bottles were a one-time purchase — not a frequent buy. Their value seems to be in the fact that they’re a souvenir, while the drink is a bonus. If you’re not keen to decorate your desk/counter/nightstand with this little guy, it may not be worth the $6.
So what do YOU think? Have you ever bought one of these Thermal Detonator bottles? Let us know in the comments — and stay tuned to our Instagram for more fun polls!

I bought 2 Sprites, thinking that I could bring home the empty bottle in my carry on luggage, that was a mistake. The only thing I would fit was the lid. So now I have a lid that can fit any Sprite bottle. And paying the $6 bucks for it was waaaaay more than what I wanted to pay.

We purchased all three and they are a cute addition to our Disney Themed Christmas tree.

We purchased two of these adorable coca cola detonator bottles for our kids the year they opened Star Wars Land. The drinks were nice and cold, so cute, nice souvenirs, and they sit on their shelves with all their Star Wars souvenirs that they have collected over the years…and I love the idea of making them into a Christmas decoration by tying a piece of twine around the bottle neck…we would definitely buy them again on our next trip to Disney and have a refreshing drink and keep them as souvenirs…$6 is a small price to pay considering that a regular coke bottle at Disney was $4 at the time and you just toss it out! We love these drink bottles…can’t wait until next time…once Pandemic is over and travel restrictions ease or disappear…see you soon DisneyWorld!!!

as a drink and as a souvenir they are borderline at 6 bucks, but when you add in the uniqueness of making it a holiday tree ornament….wow, what a bargain. Our tree is decorated in all Disney and this would make a great addition.
