FastPass+ was temporarily suspended when the Disney World theme parks reopened last year, and FastPass and MaxPass have not been available at Disneyland since its reopening.
For months now, we’ve shared all kinds of updates and thoughts on FastPass, including a look at whether our readers thought FastPass would return to Disney World in 2021, a look at the new paid FastPass system being used in Disneyland Paris, and more. Now, we’ve got a MAJOR update on the future of FastPass at Disneyland and Disney World.
Earlier today, Disney announced that FastPass will NOT return to Disney World or Disneyland Resort. MaxPass also will not return to Disneyland.
Disney has indicated that both of those systems will be retired. But, two NEW, paid systems will take their place.
Disney Genie+
First, there will be a Disney Genie+ paid service (not to be confused with the FREE Disney Genie planning service Disney will soon be releasing).
Through Disney Genie+, guests will be able to select the next available time to arrive at an attraction (essentially making a single FastPass+ selection). When the arrival time is reached, the guest will then head to the attraction and use the “Lightning Lane” and skip the standby line. The “Lightning Lane” is essentially the new name for FastPass+ lines.
Guests will be able to make a single Disney Genie+ ride selection at a time, and over 40 attractions at Disney World will be available through the system. Over 15 attractions at Disneyland will be available through the system there. Disney Genie+ will also include select other benefits like Augmented Reality lenses in Disney World, PhotoPass downloads in Disneyland, and more.
At Disney World, the cost will be $15 per ticket per day. At Disneyland, the cost will be $20 per ticket per day.

Individual Attraction Selections
In addition to Disney Genie+, guests will be able to pay for Disney’s NEW Individual Attraction Selection service. With this service, guests will pay a fee PER RIDE to utilize the “Lightning Lane.”
The attractions offered through this individual purchase option will be different than those offered through Disney Genie+. Guests will only be able to schedule an arrival time through this service for up to 2 high-demand attractions per day.
Pricing for this Individual Attraction Purchase option will vary by date, attraction, and park.
Click here to learn more about Individual Attraction Selection.
Don’t want to pay for Disney Genie+ or the Individual Attraction Selection? You’ll still be able to utilize standby lines or virtual queues for attractions throughout the parks.
Disney Genie is set to debut in the fall, and it’s our understanding that these new options (Disney Genie+ and Individual Attraction Selection) will also debut in the fall.
There are quite a few moving pieces when it comes to Disney Genie, Genie+, and Individual Attraction Selection. We’re working on getting you all of the latest info. Check out some of our more in-depth or detail-specific posts below:

Not unexpected, but also not good. Not good at all.
Kim Lindemann says

SML says
Shame on you, Disney! Can you squeeze any more money out of your loyal fans. First you take away Magical Express and free magic bands and now you charge for fast passes. What next: charging for the air we breathe in the Parks! It is a disgrace that Disney has used a devastating worldwide pandemic to make all these expensive changes that put going to Disney parks practically beyond the reach of the average family. Walt Disney would be appalled. I know I am! Where has all the MAGIC gone…
Pamela Fairley says
Glad I went this summer… this is all so confusing and greedy…
Cheryl says
Oy Voy. This can make a persons head spin trying to figure all this out. LOL
It beats running from fast pass machine to fast pass machine. I think I’d spend the extra $15.00/$20.00. I’ll just cut spending elsewhere.
Tlaw says
I’m not waiting for the pay toilets, which I suspect is next (not intended to be a pun on how the crappy CEO Chepak is running Disney into the toilet).
Can only hope that the DVC resales hold up so we can sell this pig, as the lipstick is coming off.
Off to Universal! I hear they care about the customer.
Rich says
OMG, talk about nickel and diming us to death, Disney.
Russell Kassin says
No I will not pay for it. I have a trip planned there in December of this year. That will be my last trip to a Disney park. It is way too expensive and all they care about is milking more money out of you.
Poor Gail says
For years, I’ve been hearing people whine that things were better before Fastpass (they weren’t). Guess we’re going to find out now, aren’t we?
Kirsty Fitzpatrick says
I despair…
Rob Carey says
AJ! Who’s running Disney these days? Horrible decisions. Getting up at 6:30 am to try (failed) to get my kids on Rise of the Resistance sucked. Really feels like the are catering to the rich people and could care less about average families. So sad, where’s Walt when you need him and the Disney of my youth? Apparently gone forever unless you part with a few gold bars.
Karen Taylor-Steward says
People won’t go as disney is getting greedy, people won’t pay for rides, when they paid enough to get into park
Disney making it harder for families to go,
We won’t go back fast passes & disney dinning worked, if its not broken don’t fix & fast passes & disney dinning worked
BUT DISNEY GETTING GREEDY
People can’t afford to visit Disney making the park for the rich
People will go elsewhere like universal parks
STOP BEEN GREEDY DISNEY or expect to lose people going back to your parks
Sia B says
No more WDW for me ! Its too dang complicated now and way too expensive!! My vacations from now on will b less stress. Planning WDW was stressful before now its Just way too much! More money in my pocket no more vacations spending thousands of dollars!!
Cefca says
It’s almost like Disney don’t want people to come to the parks anymore because they seem to be doing their utmost to make them as unappealing as possible.
D. Brock says
Thanks Bob Chapek! Good-bye “Magic”, hello just another theme park, and an overpriced one at that. Looks like Chapek really is in love with the way Universal Studios is run. I am sure glad I grew up in the “Walt Years” at Disneyland, Walt had a great idea…too bad the new execs are killing it…one piece at a time.
Tiffany says
Terrible! Disney will no longer be a yearly vacation destination for me and my family. It’s time to enjoy other travels. Disney has officially ended the magic.
Linda Shelby says
I ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT PAY EXRTA fir a fast pass. Could I?——- yes—— will I…. NO!!!! That is stooping way too low!!!!! It is a matter of principle!!!!😡🤬
Pris says
Yet another way for Disney to make a buck at the expense of patrons. What a surprise! (Where’s my sarcasm font?)
Robin says
Oh my gosh, more ways for Disney to make money!!! We have been every year, sometimes twice, for about the last 10 and were so looking forward to going back next year since we missed the last 2 due to COVID. The paid ‘fast pass’ addition just makes me mad! And with the Magical Express being discontinued and a charge for that now…what else are we going to have to pay for in the future that is usually included? I remember when we use to rent a car after flying in, but when they started charging to park at the hotels we started using Magical Express. It really makes me question whether we want to come back at all!
Kate says
$109 per day per ticket Check
$200 per night for hotel Check
$15 or $20 a day per ticket to be able to ride rides without standing in hours long lines check
Guess this person is going to have to find a money tree…..
GB says
How about……. NOPE.
So much for a magical vacation… this is no different than my local Six Flags and about $80 more per day. No thank you.
Geri says
WOW! What a surprise 🙄
Beaniez says
Just no. You pay so much to go to Disney. They’re making it way too expensive and annoyingly complicated. I’m disappointed.
Kim from Colorado says
I am really disappointed that Disney is deciding to go this way. It seems they are really straying from their trademark customer service. They have always been known for going above and beyond for their guests, and lately they are doing away with many services that guests have grown to depend on, and in some/many cases, are charging money, for what guests used to be able to get for free. I’m afraid they are going to price themselves so high, after all these charges, that average families will no longer be able to afford Disney vacations. It’s too bad, because all of these decisions each take a bite out of the magic of a Disney trip.
Barry says
So it’s a stealth ticket price increase, and a hefty one at that, just to get back to the same level of service we had pre-pandemic.
Sigh.
Kristi Hossler says
This is so ridiculous. Disney is no longer fun….
Alex D says
Any news if this will be included in any of the Annual passes? Hopefully, I get this for free with my Platinum!
Steve says
Disney is getting rid of equal chance for all to get fast pass and replacing it with a class system of those that can pay more vs those that can’t afford it. I’m willing to pay more for genie plu s but I think this is a step backwards. It’s not about the guests experience anymore, everything is about the shareholders. Disney stock at a record high and going up thanks to taking more and more from loyal guests. Not complaining since I have some Disney stock but again, this is another step away from The Disney that I have known and loved for so many years. It’s still a fun business to visit but the magic Is fading. I envision that in 5 years, Disney magic will be a forgotten phrase. No magic Exprress, pay $100 plus per day to get in the park where you can then pay for not waiting in line, pay for dessert parties, pay for extra hours, Disney cancels my vacation during COVID and I lose $5000 on forfeited DVC points and they don’t offer to share any of that loss,, no more express luggage to airport, and more. There is no shortage of people that can pay at the parks for this drive for increasing shareholder value so this will continue. It just doesn’t feel magical any more!
Brandon says
Absolute garbage.
Apparently Disney forgot that when people are standing in line, they are not spending money. Hence the point of the fast pass system.
I guess the nice thing is that I only ride minimal rides and while most people are rushing to spend 9 hours in line, I’ll be shopping for hard to get items with no competition.
Mike says
BREAKING: FastPass+ Will NOT Return to Disney World
AND NEITHER WILL WE !!!!!
jason says
That just made my decision about our trip next June easier, will be canceling our trip for third time and won’t return. Sad how this company is being run.
Kevin Fischer says
This is nuts. Expensive admission. Now they charge you for rides?
Officially done with WDW.
stevie says
They are pricing the working family out of going to the “Magical place”
Martin Lahaie says
This is the drop that makes it spill. Disney will not see my family ever again. I know they were always there to make money but all the attentions and perks hid that fact pretty well. Removing free parking at hotels, the magical express, and now fastpass is too much. In addition we now have the privilege of being treated to lesser more expensive versions of Halloween and Xmas parties. The magic has officially worn off for our household.
Kay says
Not a fan at all of having to pay for “fast passes”. Any other things Disney can think of to milk more money out of its patrons
Next they’ll be charging to ride the buses
Tyler says
I’m sorry but I think this is stupid. Disney is getting more expensive each year and adding an additional charge for fast passes is beyond dumb. Unfortunately I would rather pay that extra price then wait an additional who knows how long for rides when I could be enjoying my time.
June says
Sorry, but I am not seeing when this begins. Thank you
Jo says
Time to cancel our two weeks at the Yacht Club this Christmas. This idea is wrong on so many levels. Whoever created and authorised this chaos should feel ashamed.
Disney was more than parks and resorts to me. People are there to celebrate, to forget their everyday troubles, to enjoy life and to have fun -and this system describes the opposite. The pandemic should have united one another. Disney has done nothing it seems but make life more difficult for it’s guests and ramp up the prices even more at every single avenue. What’s next? $10 per friendship boat and monorail journey too? Standing room only for the ‘poor’ perhaps? Disney are spiralling down hill in the customer services department and it needs to step back and remember what it stands for.
It’s the end of the Disney road for us- the final nail.
Phillipa says
This is terrible news. Just another way to shake us down and shave a little magic from Disney World. Planning in advance will be made a whole lot harder by only being able to get Lightening Passes on the day when ADRs are made in advance – can’t marry the days up properly. Am GUTTED. This has really taken the shine off Disney for me. I don’t even mind paying so much (although I’d prefer not to), it’s the fact that I can’t book a Lightening pass until the actual day that I’m upset about – I like to have everything planned before I go and now can’t.
And us Brits get a 14 day pass usually but don’t always stay on property – sometimes in a villa, sometimes on property and sometimes a split between the two – it will be even more rubbish when we aren’t staying on property.
Phillipa says
What happens when I buy a 14 days pass (standard for UK) – is the $15 per day applied to the whole 14 days or can I pick and choose which days I pay for the Lightening passes?
In the UK you either buy a 7 day or 14 days pass, but we (my family) often just go to Orlando for 10-12 days and maybe go to Disney for 8-10 of those days but will have bought a 14 days pass s it’s the most cost effective – will we have to pay $15 per day for 14 days or will we be able to select which days we pay the $15?
Louise says
We are DVC members from the U.K. I can’t see us going again, it’s just become too expensive Disney has become over greedy, everything is a paid extra. Loosing the magical express was huge for us, it was great after such a long flight from the U.K. and time difference, it’s late at night for us so we are sleepy and want easy transport, being a family of 6 the cost is huge.
John Staley says
Why, Why, Why is Disney adding a surcharge to the already expensive park tickets???
Jaxx Larson says
This should be free for the higher-level Annual Passholders. But the insane amount we pay every year is paying for less and less and less all the time!
It’s no longer about “the magic” but instead it’s about “the money”.
DFB Sarah says
Phillipa, Disney hasn’t clarified this question yet, but we will report on the info when it’s available.
gina parrish says
I think the concept of the Genie is good but I hate that we are loosing the FASTPASS. It was a great system and I will miss it and Disney. They are out pricing so many of us that love them so much. It appears Disney is getting very greedy. I believe Walt would be so disappointed. But the CEO and executives are making over 14.2 million (in total compensation). HUMMM.
Brandie says
No fast pass (and early selection for hotel guests), no magic xpress, no extra magic hours (30 min b4 park open now?-please. )…I have absolutely NO incentive to pay so much xtra money to stay at a Disney resort. They have completely blown any feeling of magic. I have a feeling Walt would not approve of this.
Kris Mitchell says
Listen up disney! We pay for a park ticket! Get it….we pay for a park ticket! That should allow us equally to be able to ride EVERY ride while we are there! The cost is already astronomical and you want more! Our traveling companions sold all of their disney gift cards and refuse to go due to all of these ” changes” which are really just “additional costs” and i don’t blame them. You pay all these extras already and still aren’t guaranteed you will get on a ride. We had a trip that was canceled due to the pandemic and i dont see us rescheduling. Very sad! Keep up all the advertisements, your gonna need it!
Erin says
I agree to everyone’s comments. Disney has definitely shown a money hungry surge that has made going to Disney out of reach for the everyday person. Disney has always been expensive trip especially for a bigger family. As they take away perks they add experiences if your willing to pay. The Deluxe resorts to get extra hours in the park, no free magic bands, paying for rides on top of park tickets, no magic express. Making an already expensive trip that much more expensive which adds stress to a trip that is already stressful. Disney needs to bring back some original Walt perspective.
Kate says
Disney is starting to get tacky with all the nickel and diming. Plus, now you have to be on your phone ALL DAY instead of unplugging and spending time with family. I’m not thrilled with this new system at all. I like to stay off my phone and spend time with family. Universal Express Pass seems like a less hassle program. I’m not happy at all that Disney now requires you to be on your phone all day, and then charges you for it!
DanielleV says
Very frustrating without a cost savings anywhere else in the package process.
