Last year, FastPass+ was temporarily suspended when Disney World reopened. At Disneyland, FastPass and MaxPass were also temporarily suspended and are still not available.
Earlier today Disney announced that FastPass, FastPass+, and MaxPass will be retired, and some NEW, PAID services will take their places at Disneyland and Disney World. Just how much will these pay-to-ride programs cost and what do you need to know about them? We’re breaking it all down here.
As we mentioned, today Disney announced that FastPass and FastPass+ will NOT be returning to Disney World or Disneyland. FastPass and MaxPass also will not be returning to Disneyland.
In their place will be a NEW, paid system. There will actually be two separate new ways for guests to skip the standby lines and reserve what rides they want to go on, and both will require additional payment.
Disney Genie+ TLDR
As we know, Disney will be introducing Disney Genie, a free, “virtual personal assistant” as part of My Disney Experience this fall. A secondary, paid service will be called Disney Genie+. This paid service will replace FastPass and MaxPass. It will allow guests to bypass standby lines at select attractions by paying a base price: $20 per day per ticket at Disneyland Resort and $15 per day per ticket at Disney World.
Base Price Disney Genie+ (Ride Less Popular Rides For One Base Price)
With Disney Genie+, guests will be able to to select return times (for 1 ride at a time) for as many of the included attractions as they’d like. This service can be used in all four parks with a park hopper ticket. (For those who used the old FastPass system or have experience with MaxPass in Disneyland, this will be familiar.)
Attractions in the base-priced DisneyGenie+ have not been officially announced, but we’ve heard directly from Disney via a media call that they will include attractions like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, and Haunted Mansion.
Disney Genie+ Popular Attraction Upcharge (Pay An A La Carte Price PER RIDE To Experience The Most Popular Attractions in Disney World)
Now, if you want to ride Disney’s most popular attractions without a wait, there will be a second paid upcharge (which is separate) that will allow guests to select return times for a maximum of two specific, more popular attractions.
I repeat: the attractions featured in these two paid options will NOT be the same. Not-so-popular rides will be included in the base price of Disney Genie+ (or you can wait in the standby line for free). Popular rides…ya gotta pay separately to ride (or stand in the standby line for free). The price for the popular ride a la carte option will vary depending on the date, attraction, and park — which means, the more in demand the ride…the more it’ll cost you to ride. Yep — your favorite Disney rides could now have SURGE PRICING. lol except we’re crying.
Freaked out? Totally Confused? Us too.
Let’s break down all the info you need to know here in a step-by-step fashion:
Disney Genie
The first thing we want to briefly talk about is Disney Genie. Disney Genie itself is a FREE service that will be available as part of the My Disney Experience app in Disney World and the Disneyland App at Disneyland Resort.
Disney Genie will help guests plan their visits based on their interests, the rides they want to go on, and more. Disney Genie will give guests a personalized itinerary and tip board based on what they want to see, show them forecasted future wait times, connect them with a virtual assistant, and help them place mobile orders, join a mobile dine walk-up waitlist for restaurants, and more.
For example, you’ll be able to tell the Disney Genie what attractions you want to experience, etc. and it’ll create a personalized itinerary for your day, which is flexible and can be modified as your day continues.
Click here to learn more about Disney Genie.
Disney Genie+ and Lightning Lanes
What is It?
While Disney Genie itself is free, if you want to skip the standby lines and go through essentially what used to be called the “FastPass queue” then you’ll need to pay for the Disney Genie+ service.
With Disney Genie+, you’ll be able to select the next available time to arrive at an attraction (sort-of like making a single FastPass+ selection) and use that attraction’s “Lightning Lane” (essentially the new name for FastPass+ lines).
When your arrival time comes up, you’ll then head to the attraction, use the Lightning Lane, and skip the standby line.
How Many Selections Can You Make?
You’ll be able to make 1 of these attraction selections through Disney Genie+ at a time (sort of the way you could get one FastPass at a time way back in the day).
Once tap in for your Lightning Lane selection, you can book another one. Ride that one, book another. Etc.
How Many Rides Are Included?
Not all rides will be available through Disney Genie+. This ability to select attraction return times through Disney Genie+ will be available for more than 15 attractions at Disneyland Resort, and over 40 attractions at Disney World.
So far, Disney has indicated that some of the rides that will be available through Disney Genie+ include Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.
You’ll be able to make these selections throughout the day, subject to availability.
What Else is Included?
At Disney World, Disney Genie+ will also include Disney PhotoPass Augmented Reality lenses. At Disneyland, your purchase of Disney Genie+ will include Disney PhotoPass downloads from that day. If you buy Disney Genie+ you’ll also get access to some special audio experiences in the app that will feature Imagineers and special guests. These audio features will let you learn fun facts about the attractions and other areas of the park around you.
What’s the Cost?
And now, the most important question you might be wondering — how much will Disney Genie+ cost? At Disney World, the cost will be $15 per ticket, per day. At Disneyland, the cost will be $20 per ticket per day.
You can purchase Disney Genie+ in advance for all of the days of your trip, but can only book attractions on the day of your visit. Yep, 60 and 90 day FastPass selections are GONEZO. You can now only book attractions on the day you go to the park.
When Can You Select Your Rides?
At Walt Disney World, guests will be able to make their first Disney Genie+ ride selection at 7AM on the day of their visit. At Disneyland, guests can make their first Disney Genie+ selection once they’re in the park.
Individual Attraction Selections (For Purchase)
So we’ve discussed Disney Genie and its FREE planning services. And we’ve talked about Disney Genie+ and its FastPass/MaxPass-like service that allows you to pick return times for 1 attraction at a time and use the lightning lane to skip the standby line…for a fee.
But, Disney has also announced that Disney Genie+ will have another paid option for guests. If you want to skip the standby line at select (more popular) attractions, you’ll need to pay for Disney’s Individual Attraction Selection service. This is similar in a sense to what we’ve seen offered at Disneyland Paris, where you pay a fee to utilize what was essentially the FastPass lane, but you pay just for that individual attraction.
What Attractions Will be Included in This Individual Purchase Option?
The attractions offered through this individual purchase option will be different than those offered through the base-price Disney Genie+.
So far, Disney has indicated that the following rides will be included in this individual attraction selection option: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Magic Kingdom, Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure Park, Rise of the Resistance in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Web Slingers in Disney California Adventure park, and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure in EPCOT. Disney will release the rest of the attractions in this group later this year.
Note that Disney has indicated virtual queue boarding groups will continue for free to all guests for Rise of the Resistance, but if you do not get a boarding group you can try to get a spot by using the paid Individual Attractions Selection option. The same will be done with Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, which will use a virtual queue free to all guests when it opens (but when Individual Attraction Purchases become available, you’ll also be able to pay to schedule a ride at this attraction).
How Many Individual Attraction Selections Can You Make Per Day?
With this individual attraction selection, guests will be able to schedule a time to ride up to 2 high-demand attractions each day and use the Lightning Lane entrance during their scheduled time to ride. These two attractions can be at different parks if you have a park hopper ticket.
What is the Price for Individual Attraction Selections?
Pricing for this Individual Attraction Purchase option will vary by date, attraction, and park. Note that you do not need to buy Disney Genie+ in order to use this Individual Attraction Selection service. So, for example, if you JUST want to ride Rise of the Resistance and you don’t care about anything else, you do NOT need to purchase Disney Genie+ to ride it. You only have to pay the individual cost of that ride.
When Can You Make Individual Selection Bookings?
Note that these Individual Attraction Purchases can be made on the same day of your visit and used across multiple parks.
HOTEL PERK ALERT! At Disney World, if you’re staying at a Disney owned and operated hotel, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin, or the Shades of Green Hotel you’ll be able to make your first Individual Attraction Selection at 7AM. All other guests will have to make their selections when the park opens.
Also, keep in mind that attractions will continue to offer standby queues or virtual queue options for guests not wanting to use any of these paid options. Essentially, you can continue to visit the parks and just join the standby lines as usual. You can also use the Disney Genie planning service for FREE if you want. Disney Genie+ and/or Individual Attraction Selections are completely optional. You can do none of these, all of them, or a mix.
Disney Genie is set to debut in the fall, and it’s our understanding that these new options (Disney Genie+ and Individual Attraction Selection) will also debut in the fall.

I love Disney but the blatant cash grab is getting totally out of control. The message seems to be if you’re wealthy with money to burn WELCOME!!!, if not we’ll take you but don’t expect much. It makes me so sad. Definitely not the Disney we fell in love with decades ago. 😢
Javier says
Sorry, sounds like a complete mess this Genie + system. Why Disney? Why!? Fix something that is not broke in the Fast Pass System.
Alan says
I hate it.
Angel says
Absolutely furious about this! Disney just keeps dividing the Haves and the Have Nots. It’s one thing to pay increased ticket prices but at least we could use fastpass and maximize our time in the parks. It was equal across the board. Now the Haves will get more park experience in their day while the Have Nots will wait in longer lines and get less experiences for their ticket price. I’m not willing to just stand around in line so this will mean where we might have gone to the parks every year, our family will have to go every other or third year to have the same experience we had before. Very sad…
Michael says
Greedy. Rats to them I will wait in line and not spend in shops while I wait
Paul says
Can you do a video or summary on what actual perks are left for staying onsite? Very disappointed there isn’t a free x number of instant passes for hotel guests. Compared to universal where they have the unlimited FastPass with their top hotels Disney seems to be cracking down on any perks with paid parking, removal of free dining plan offer (dining credit nowhere near recoups this for a family of 5 and no real gap between moderate and deluxe perks) then paid FastPass… for a UK family visiting for 2 weeks this is an expensive add on!
Andrew Okus says
Does Genie+ have to be purchased for your entire stay or can it be added on a day to day basis during your stay?
DFB Sarah says
Andrew, that’s a good question for which Disney has not yet provided clarification. I’ll drop this question for the team so we can find an answer.
Ira says
You can buy day by day, even day of. It was explained in their email.
Amanda says
What does this mean for methose with annual passes? For example Platinum passholders get Photo Pass included now. Will any of the passes include any type of Fast Pass?
DanielleV says
If I’m reading this correctly you have to have the par copper? Which is already the more expensive ticket. And you’re going to also see photos? So now I guess I don’t need the memory maker?
DFB Sarah says
Heidi, you should be able to do that, yes.
DFB Sarah says
Danielle, you don’t need to have a Park Hopper; rather, if you don’t use Park Hopper, you’d make your Genie+ and/or Individual Attraction Selections in the one Park you plan to visit that day. Does that make sense?
DFB Sarah says
Amanda, Disney has not specifically said any part of Genie+ or Individual Attraction Selections will be part of Annual Passes. We will keep our eyes peeled for info and report should it be released.
DFB Sarah says
Katie, I have not seen this confirmed, but it’s on our radar to find out.
DFB Sarah says
Kim, no word on this. I’ll drop your question for our team and report if Disney releases this info.
DFB Sarah says
Ira, could be. We’ll be reporting as soon as Disney releases a date.
20+ years at Disney says
I always valued Disney over Universal all because of the fasspass and how incredible they made it available everyone, the whole ‘genie’ listening to everybody’s “feedback” when? I never once heard someone or majority say let’s do Paid fasspass, but when I visited Paris it wasn’t the same. Every year I notice the magic disappears at Disney World. I wish I quit years ago so all I would of had was good memories, sadly I’m replacing them with dismal worry’s
DFB Sarah says
Rachel, the $15 per day for Genie+ will include a day of selecting Lightning Lane reservations, one at a time (so when you use your first one, you can look for a second, and so forth). It would not be $60 per attraction. The per-attraction paid service is Individual Attraction Selections. Disney hasn’t released how much those will cost, but it will vary based on date/park/attraction.
DFB Sarah says
John, Rise of the Resistance is not included in Genie+; it’s going to be an option in Individual Attraction Selections, so you’d have to pay for that Lightning Pass separately.
Deb W says
This is very disappointing and may be the final straw on selling my DVC and not renewing my annual pass. It takes away the ability to plan you days in advance to be able to enjoy your vacation once you arrive. It turns every day into a money grabbing, stressful scrambling start to every morning, never knowing what time you will end up being able to go to a park until that day. Not everyone spends every open hour in the parks!! Not cool Disney. Walt must be rolling over in his grave.
DFB Sarah says
Heather, I don’t believe Disney has released specifics about Disney Genie and Passholders. We’re watching for info.
Dave says
Again with another money grab. I don’t know if it is worth it to visit anymore. We usually visit as a family (which is now 10 people) at Christmas with the free dining, during the school break. At this rate we will no longer be able to afford anything except maybe stay at the hotel and sit by the pool until they start charging for that also. We cannot drive because you have to pay for your car to sit in the parking lot. We cannot fly because we have to pay to get from the airport to the resort. Maybe at least the crowds will be less because no one can afford the prices any more. We won’t be spending money on food or buying from the stores because we will be standing in the stand by line waiting to ride a ride which is one of the reasons we visit. I guess the best thing to do is people watch as they come and go from the parks, which wouldn’t cost anything. Oh sorry, no people to watch because no one can afford to go to the parks.
DFB Sarah says
D.G., personally, I’m a big fan of paragraphs. 😉 We’re still waiting for details from Disney about how the new system(s) impact Annual Passholders. We’ll report on this as soon as Disney releases the info.
DFB Sarah says
Scott, that would be $15 per person per day — a one-time charge per day per person in your party.
DFB Sarah says
Mariana, the only details Disney released about DAS are that features will be added to Disney Genie that will allow DAS users to enroll before arriving the Parks and that will allow DAS users to make their selections in the app (I believe this would be in lieu of having to go to the attraction to request a pass for the ride). Disney did say the current DAS system will remain in place, so you can choose to do it the “old” way, too.
Ronjon says
I blame new CEO Bob Chepek for this new level of corporate greed and all the bad things and disappointmnets that are happening for the regular visitors and guest as he is trying to squeeze them out. Too bad we can’t recall him like we can do with certain politicians.
Jay says
Is everyone in your party going to have to purchase Genie+? We go as a family. Wife and two kids. Wife rides zero rides! Will I have to pay the extra 15 just so we can use the service to skip the line at dumbo?!
Nikki says
I visit from the UK on average every two years as we like to stay on site and that is a considerable cost.
Over the years I have watched the magic disappear bit by bit, first they introduced paid parking at hotels which was on a tiered system and unfair for those who had already forked out more for a deluxe hotel to have to pay more on parking.
Then they decided to remove magical express and Disney dining plan, now fast passes. For me part of the fun of the build up to the holiday was planning your fast passes in advance – so you at least knew there was a chance you would get on that must do ride.
Now in addition to the hotel and ticket prices increasing I have to get up at 7 am to be in with a shot of getting on a ride! What next charge for Disney transportation??
Just what are the Disney perks now??
No longer the happiest place on Earth for me – Disney are pricing customers out and making it unaffordable for many . Our usual on site hotel price has increased 40% for the same weeks in 2019 and we’re worse off.
I never thought I would say it but universal seems more and more appealing!!
DFB Sarah says
Jay, Disney has not specified if you can pick and choose which members of your party purchase Disney Genie+ at this point. It may be that you can purchase it just for the people in your party who would use it. We will report as soon as Disney releases that information.
Heather says
Sorry disney you list loyal fans with this. Stop taking tje magic out of disney. You want more money but take away everything magic house magic bands magical express. Disney is just for the wealthy now. Hello universal studios
Jackie says
I am very disappointed with this new information. Disney keeps pushing many average income people away from enjoying what Walt Disney had in mind. I have been going to Disney since it opened and now I am really thinking about now going anymore. They are money hungry and don’t care about loyal fans. This is totally a disgrace and it sucks.
Deanna says
Blatant grab for more of our money. You can’t breathe in DisneyWorld now unless you pay a fee it seems. I’m done with Disney now. I’ll spend my money somewhere else.
April says
My guess is that they’re just “unbundling” — they could have continued a Free Fast Pass system, but that would make ALL park tickets go up by the same amount, whether or not users are interested in those features.
Also, by initially debuting it as a paid feature, it becomes more valuable when attached as a “free” incentive to hotel stays. We now have a mental anchor of $15/person/day, so anything less than that will be “a deal.”
JB says
As a stockholder, with all this extra revenue coming in, it would be nice if Disney would reinstate their dividend payments. That’s about the only positive I can see coming out of this. Isn’t part of the fun being able to make up your day as you go along? I don’t want some AI telling me I should go get food somewhere when all I want to do is ride space mountain. Also pretty neat idea to have everyone stare at phone screens all day instead of actually enjoying their vacation…Chapek seems like a tool…who did he bribe to become CEO?
Margaret Slattery says
The magic is definitely disappearing. Disney is making it difficult to enjoy a day at the park. Is Disney reducing the already high cost of a daily pass? Because of this change, I am considering cancelling my 2022 plans for Disney . I spend too much money at Disney to have to figure out this Genie thing- makes the planning stressful and definitely not worth the money spent there.
Ren Gibson says
Not a fan. Just straight up greedy. Paid parking at hotels, increased ticket prices, increased food prices, increased hotel prices, increased cost for after hours Xmas party. C’mon, give us a break somewhere.
The only benefit I see is being able to avoid the Rise of the Resistance virtual queue, but of course, at an additional cost.
Lisa says
Did I read somewhere that certain rides, like Remey’s RA (the new best rides!), would only be through a virtual que with NO standby lane. If we were there one day and couldn’t manage to get in the QUE then we don’t get to even wait in line to ride. ??
Steve Slattery says
Very disappointed and just another way to bleed your loyal customers. I find it interesting that this coincides with the 50th anniversary of Disney World. Coming out of a Pandemic (hopefully) and people are itching to have some fun, this just seems to be taking advantage of customers. When you have tickets for the park, it just doesn’t seem right for a tack on, if people can’t afford the extra money and lines being what they are, they may only get to ride a couple of attractions and then call it a day.
Dustin says
I like the new paid system and i am not an overly wealthy person as everyone thinks. I have been to both Disneyland and Disney World. The Disneyland paid maxpass was far superior to the fasstpass. You do not have to plan 30 to 60 days ahead, your not stuck waiting till you have used all three fastpass selections before making the next one. Now the the fastpass lines will even shorter because it is not free and available for every park goer.
Poof says
I agree with everyone, such a shame. The magic is just gone. Disney has been big in my life since my parents took me in 1971, I was 4. I’ve made it a big part of my children’s life and was hoping to do the same for my grandchildren but it looks like that won’t be possible. They’re making it a job, (big job) when vacation is supposed to be relaxing, enjoyable and fun. They’re taking the fun, enjoyment and most of all the magic out of everything. POOF! It’s gone.
My husband had a good point, they are in no way interested in the Have Not’s only the Haves, the elite, to afford and bring in the money. (it’s all that matters) That’s why they’re catering to them. They’ll just except the extra side pocket money from the Have Nots that get to go, once in a blue moon. They don’t care whether they have a lousy time or how much of a job it is, what they didn’t get to do, but yet spent all that money- they still pocket the money. It’s extra cash, no skin off their backs. What a shame a life savings will go to his pocket. I wonder if Mr. Bob… would wake up and start smelling some serious coffee if we all stopped going, and buying everything Disney.
I was so looking forward to going and taking my family to celebrate the 50th. As it would have been 50 years since my parents took me and my grandchild would be the same age as I was then when I went 50 years ago. But that magic dream is over, I can’t feed Mr. Bob… my life savings.
Definitely not the same. I think everyone can agree this was not Walt’s vision and what he wanted. How sad for him and us all.
Stasha V says
This is terrible especially with those with kids(imagine those with kids or teens)(how literally boring it will b waiting to put in a ride all day) You are on the phone all day on a family vacation. Not my idea of a good time. Disney has lost their magic and Im going to universal next
Ronald says
Disney reacts to empty hotel rooms. Please everyone DO NOT book Disney rooms in 2021 and 2022. CANCEL your reservations if you already have booked them. Ask for your $200 deposit back. This financial pressure on Disney will force them to give us back what they just took from us and maybe add additional perks like BUY FOUR DAYS IN THE HOTEL AND GET SEVEN DAYS. Disney may also bring back the WONDERFUL CONVENIENT AND FREE FAST PASS. Fight back people. Walt would never allow this example of greed. EMPTY HOTEL ROOMS WILL COMBAT GREED.

I’m from Sweden. I used to visit WDW once a year to once evey other year. My last visit was in 2018, and already then I felt that it was no longer the same. Now I fear that I’ll never be able to visit a Disney park ever again.
On my last two trips I stayed on property, at Pop Century and at Arto of Animation respectively. When I stayed at Pop, I had the free dining plan. When I stayed at Art of Animation, I decided to pay for the deluxe Dining Plan and I also added the Memory Maker. It was expensive, but at least with the perks that was being offered – with the free MagicBand, the Magical Express and Extra Magic Hours – it still felt worth it. That is no longer the case. All the benefits of staying on property have been made away with, the hotels and the park tickets are more expensive than ever, and Disney keepa adding extra fees.
I can no longer justify the price tag of going to WDW. If I ever go back, then I’ll have to drastically cut back on merchandise, food and snacks, and I won’t be able to pay extra for the park hopper, water parks or the Memory Maker. No matter what, Disney won’t get any more money out of me than before. I simply can’t afford it. And worse of all: it’s not fun any more, and it feels insulting:

Especially when Disney constantly tries to frame these negative changes as ”magical” and as a good and beneficial service to me as a guest.

Lisa, the expectation is that Remy’s will use a virtual queue. If it is set up like Rise of the Resistance, there would be no Standby queue. So the options to ride would be a Boarding Pass/Virtual Queue or an Individual Attraction Selection.
Elizabeth says
I find it interesting and a spin on perception Disney has done to people that the writer of this article actually says “or wait in the standby line for free…” What?! I paid over $100-130pp to wait in that standby for free for 6 people! I would never pay $15 per person for the fast one or whatever mess they’re calling it now. We have an 8 day trip planned in November (second one this year from February) and can tell it will be a bare basic trip because of so much more cost everywhere and less to enjoy. No we are absolutely not rich… All about money before magic now.
Lanita says
I like part of the change – as I prefer MaxPass to FastPass. The 90 days prior or 60 days prior or not at all ahead so tough luck – was stressful for me. I liked MaxPass – walk through the turnstile and everyone is on the same footing. Paying a little is on par with the industry standard and with PhotoPass included for the day it works for me. The only things I don’t like are the additional fees for the more popular attractions (seriously $15 more per day wasn’t enough) and that there has been nothing towards $ off or deals if you stay on site. I’ve grown to like the skyliner – but with no transport included from the airport, parking fees at the resorts and the park and basically no other perks to justify the high $s of staying on site I will book cheaper hotels offsite where I can used loyalty points and have free parking and maybe a free breakfast to offset the costs of transport and Fastpasses. Not what I think they were hoping for ……

People already pay just go n to the park and then on top of that they want u to pay extra to avoid wait times to go on rides so think about it they r trying to make everyone buy the genie plus on top of paying just to walk n the gate that is the most horrible thing to do to people that want to go have a fun time it’s called pure greed they don’t care about what we have gone thru with the virus that has attacked us and now we r trying to enjoy life again how do they even look at their selves n the mirror and sleep at night for the greed they do my family is so upset about the fact that we may never b able to take them there again and we know this also means disappointments for others too
