Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is one of the most popular rides in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
But, if you want to get on this popular attraction right now, you’ll have to try and score a Boarding Group, which can be one of the most difficult things to do in Disney World. We’ve seen boarding group times change, and parts of the process be updated, but now Disney has made a HUGE announcement about the future of Boarding Groups at this ride.
According to Disney, starting September 23rd, Disney is going to PAUSE the use of virtual queues for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
That’s right folks, starting September 23rd, you’ll be able to ride Rise of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios WITHOUT a Boarding Group. Instead of trying to join the virtual queue, guests will be able to use the traditional standby queue.
Disney noted that as they ramp up to the 50th Anniversary celebrations, they’re “continuing to enhance experiences” thanks to guest feedback, and it appears this is one of the “enhancements” they’ll be making.
Note that Disney has said they will “PAUSE” the use of virtual queues for Rise of the Resistance. Disney shared that virtual queues continue to be helpful, and that guests should continue to check the My Disney Experience app for updates on virtual queues, including the potential return of Boarding Groups to Rise of the Resistance at a later date or from time to time.
So, it sounds like while the virtual queue will be paused on September 23rd, Boarding Groups may return for Rise of the Resistance at a later date, or may pop up from time to time. We’ll keep an eye out for updates on that and let you know what we find.
Keep in mind that Disney has also previously shared that Rise of the Resistance will be one of the attractions guests will be able to pay for individually to skip the line and use that ride’s Lightning Lane once Individual Attraction Selection becomes available in Disney World. Individual Attraction Selection is one of the new paid FastPass-like services Disney will soon be introducing, along with Disney Genie+.
At the moment, Disney has mentioned that this is applicable at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, but has not said that the same change will be made at Disneyland Resort.

Disney has ruined nearly every part of the “ magic”. We’re at Disney world all this week. The greed has reached proportions so epic as almost not to be believed! I understand that profit is not a dirty word, but $23.00 for a barely happy meal quality toy is sad and pathetic. We got a slurpee in what might have been an 8oz cup for $5.00 seemed like a punked skit. 5 of our group when online the second the online queue opened for rise, with no luck, not even a try again later messages. Now they’ll start charging extra to get on the good rides? As if $12,000.00 for a week in Florida with 9 people isn’t enough? It’s sad to think of those saving for years to go and then find what little they think of the less than rich. I know my little rant will be mocked, but Even old Walt Disney himself is rolling in his grave at the soulless greed his vision has become.
Melanie Durham says
I am so happy about this!
Sarah says
Jeff- we are one of those families that literally save for years and I have been out of work (not collecting unemployment) since the start of this pandemic. It just sucks!
Darrell says
This is only being done because of the individual attraction pricing. Without the standby line they can’t change the pricing on the individual attraction to use the lightning lane. If Genie+ wasn’t being released this change would not happen.
Aaron says
I too am happy about this. Last trip we made we got an early boarding number. App said 75 mins till we boarded and knowing we had an hour after to utilize we got in line for slinky dog (90 min wait). After 20 mins in line our boarding pass time went from 55 mins to 15. So we got out and ran across to get to ROTR. As we walked up it changed to 50+ again. I felt handcuffed by this and unsure what to do next. All other rides for my 4yo were 60-90 min wait and this ride kept changing. It was important to ride because he was too short last trip we made. We eventually made it on the ride but sacrificed waiting and riding other rides.

If it were me, I would never get to see this attraction. You have to be very fast and try to use your phone quickly. Some of us just are not that tech savvy. I’m glad to see the change so all can have a chance to see this.
Tom says
So now the options are to physically stand in line for 3 hours or pay? That sounds awful. The virtual queue sucked, but at least it frees you up to not have to spend 3 hours in line.
Robert says
When are the Peking lot trams coming back????? Walking in the lot for a mile with no shade, no where to stop and tired especially for older people is ridiculous. It’s not like walking in the actual park for all the above.
Don says
Yes, open the standby line…make sure it’s hours long (3+), let everyone become miserable enough to be willing to pay for Genie + with ADDITIONAL PAY PER RIDE on this and other rides. Soon you will see DVC sold off to Marriot, or some other time share corporation, and Disney will get royalties from leasing the property. Big changes to come. This Chapek guy is a genius/money man. I bet he dreams of changing the name to ChapekWorld.
June says
I am happy for those coming with this new no boarding pass, however as Jeff said it was a huge disappointment for those of us there last week. We had two in our party and could not get a boarding pass. As AJ always said they are gone in seconds. Still had a great time especially at Epcot 😀
AD says
They should permanently do away with the mandatory virtual queues. People have had their one and only chance to ride RoR ruined because they couldn’t get into the virtual queue. It is usually completely filled about 1 second after queue times open. There should be the option to wait in a regular line on all rides. Was saddened to hear the new Ratatouille ride was going to use this unfair virtual queue method
charles thorne says
Happy here as well, Id rather wait in line at some point in the day than to know at 7am you cant ride, even more so since the old park hopper isn’t in place I know I didn’t added to our upcoming trip. So we had two chances to ride for our day in HS. all we can hope for is a short standby line at some point in the day. 160 days and counting. Have a wonderful day everyone.
SML says
If Disney really wants to enhance the experience, which I doubt, they would reinstate Magical Express, free Magic Bands, the old Fast Pass system, Food Plans, and send Genie+ back to where it came from. Now that would be enhancing guest experiences. “Pausing” virtual cues for RotR! Cut me a break, what’s the matter, are people finally wising up and saying NO MORE! Are there massive cancellations…
Jerry Koenig says
Pricing for what you get in General at Disney is out of control. I realize they’ve lost Billions due to the pandemic but they’ve still got to make it reasonable for families to want to go. The key is…. if people continue to go and show up and pay to be there and pay for all their other charges they put on you they will not change. They don’t have to, people will complain and still go, so Disney really doesn’t have to change. It would take a majority mutiny of showing way less crowds for them to even think twice.
Brandon says
Just Disney forcing park goers to buy their Rip-Off Genie+.
They plan to torture the guest by making them stand in line for 6bhours hoping for a chance to actually ride Rise of the Resistance.
Lawrence Bell says
Create long lines to make us pay more, brilliant. Disney really loves…our money.
Shontel says
I would like to know if space 220 will let you order the kids menu for your picky eater even if they are older then 9 but you are still willing to pay the adult price. We just want to experience.
DFB Sarah says
Shontel, we’ll ask!
Mark says
It’s bad for the kids t be so excited and not get a chance to ride or experience it . They should either limit the number in the parks or sections of the parks and or offer $100 per ride based on no ride availability per day
Mark says
Also I’d comment that I have been there 9 times to all the parks and the waits are to long even when I was there feb2020
The heck with the excuses if it’s not fair u can’t get on a ride then 100 refund per rider charging more in the future is not ethical supply and demand you are basically creating a bait and switch marketing approach because it’s not realistic u know u can’t let everyone ride
Ken says
I have to wonder if Disney has “Jumped the shark” when it comes to price increases and perk withdrawals. Are guests finally getting the message that a trip to Disney, for even one day is getting too expensive. I know I have cut my Disney budget in half for 2022.
DFB Sarah says
Robert, unfortunately no word from Disney about trams yet.
Toni says
I have to hand it to them, they know what they’re doing. A week or two of what 2 hr + wait times will have people fighting for those lightening passes.
Alan C says
Completely agree with Jeff. I imagine the bean counters, Chapek head of table, modeled revenue from virtual queue vs. VQ + per-ride upcharge vs. canning the VQ and assuming more people will pay per ride – and the revenue winner was #3. All we can do is hope people vote with their wallets, which seems unlikely at the time.
Disney has become rather a herd mentality, and I don’t say that without the other four fingers pointing back at us because we just bought APs to enjoy what’s left for a year to see what shakes out. It’s been our goal for a long time. Be careful what you wish for…
Adding in the additional D+ subscribers who may not have signed up without COVID, and Bob’s salary-avoidance from 30,000+ layoffs, reasonable people could wonder whether the real books show a loss at all, couldn’t they?
Pam says
I have to comment here because I too believe that this Disney World is not the Happiest Place On Earth that Walt Disney envisioned. From my reading about Mr. Disney, his whole idea was to have an AFFORDABLE (key word) place for families to go and enjoy together. As former annual pass holders, my husband and I enjoyed many visits to Disney World over the years. While it was expensive, it wasn’t unaffordable for us. But, at the same time, we have no children and I’ve often wondered how a family of 4 affords even a few days. Each year it seemed to get more and more expensive and then COVID struck. They have taken this opportunity to impose new restrictions (reservations, restricted park hopping, limited visits to Disney hotels, and the list goes on), not to mention cost increases for tickets and annual passes, taking away “perks” such as free magic bands, free fast passes, unrestricted park hopping, etc. There are no more parades as we knew them, limited character visits, dining plans and tables in wonderland have not come back and entertainment in the parks is still very limited. I could go on but I think I’ve made my point…Disney World has changed and not for the better. We were looking forward to renewing our annual passes but have decided not to now. There is nothing to look forward to other than much more planning and strategizing (rather stressful) and spending a LOT more money. Thank you Mr. Chapek for making Disney not so magical anymore. Sad, very sad.
Doug Phillips says
Yes! I’ve been going to WDW multiple times a year for 30 years. At first there were no cell phone, then it was a break from my cell phone, and now it’s a day at the office having to check my phone every 5 minutes. Nothing magical about that. Any time they reduce my dependence on technology while on a vacation the better. (And I a software engineer).
MLC says
I agree with Jeff about the greed and losing the Magic. About Walt rolling over in his grave… absolutely!
