Here at DFB, we have a decidedly pro-noodle policy. And if you’re telling us we can eat noodles for a good cause, we’re IN.
We were invited to Morimoto Asia and Good Salt Restaurant Group’s 4th annual Ramen Rumble — a competitive Ramen-based charity event that benefits Give Kids the World. We’re bringing you a full review in case the Ramen Rumble might be on the docket for you in 2022. Plus, don’t ya want to know who won the ramen competition?
Atmosphere
The event was hosted at Morimoto Asia in Disney Springs with two different event times, one at 5:30PM and one at 8:30PM.
There was a solid crowd of people headed to the event.
Morimoto Asia is always a beautiful space, so we thought it was a good fit to host the charity Ramen Rumble.
Did you know this is the biggest Ramen Rumble event to date!?
Since this is a charity event, there was a silent auction set up and there were raffle tickets available for $2 each. Remember all proceeds of the event went to Give Kids the World to help give critically-ill kids and their families a free weeklong vacation.
There were various drink samples available prior to the full ramen tasting of the event. We tried out Suntory Whisky, Soto Sake, and more.
We were assigned a table number that was set with utensils and cloth napkins.
LET’S GET READY TO RRRRUUUUUMMMMBBBLLLEEE!!! Ramen Rumble, that is.
Menu
The Ramen Rumble event features six contestants who each make their own unique style of ramen for guests to sample and vote on. Whoever wins snags the coveted Broth Belt trophy to prove they are King or Queen of Ramen! The participating contestants are: Morimoto Asia, Seito Sushi, Susuru, Ichicoro Ramen, Ramen Takagi, and Yugiri Ramen Project.
The event includes your six servings of ramen, one drink, and a traditional Asian dessert for the entry price of $80. We were given paper menus that listed the ramen options and the participating chefs.
Let’s start with our drinks! We opted for the White Tiger Negroni off of the Morimoto drink menu. This drink is made with roku gin, l’apertivo nonino, choya umeshu plum wine, and orange bitters. It was gin-forward and had some light orange notes that were a delight.
We also tried out the Morimoto Mai Tai. This was a classic Mai Tai that was quite sweet with a strong coconut rum flavor that overwhelmed the other ingredients a bit. But it was still tasty for Mai Tai lovers!
Then, it was on to the ramen! Each bowl was very different and they came quickly once we were seated. First up, we had the Surf n’ Turf Ramen by Morimoto Asia.
The ingredients in this serving included gyu-kotsu (beef bone marrow broth), a-5 Wagyu and Hokkaido scallop, scallions, and black pepper oil. The noodles provided by SUN NOODLES are the Temomi Thick Noodle. They’re thick, yellow, wavy noodles that are sent through a massager for variable texture and bite.
This one had a lot of hearty beef flavor and the noodles had an amazing texture to them. The broth complimented all of the ingredients with a thick and meaty quality. Plus, the Wagyu and scallops made for a very rich bite!
Next up, we tried Seito Sushi’s XO Mazemen. This one is made with curry sauce, pork belly xo, uni butter, onsen tamago, and cucumber. The noodles in this one were SUN NOODLES’ Medium Straight Noodle — thick, straight flat, white noodles.
The XO Mazemen had an egg yolk-based sauce that made it very thick when mixed together. The nori and uni also gave this brothless ramen a strong seafood flavor.
Now we’re on to Yugiri Ramen Project’s Vegan Spicy Miso Ramen made with tomato dashi, wavy noodles, miso tare, soy ginger tofu, sweet onions, scallions, chili oil, burnt garlic oil, togarashi, yugin garlic chili crisp, and non. The SUN NOODLES here are the Thin Wavy Noodle VH-24W (a classic Japanese noodle with a nice translucency).
This dish was VERY heavy on the soy and toasted sesame oil flavor. There was a lot of nori that added a seafood taste and the use of Thai chili made the dish PACKED with spice. This broth was pretty buttery but not as thick as the Morimoto Asia broth.
Next up, we tried the Tonkotsu Gyokai from Ramen Takagi. The ingredients here are tsukemen (dipping noodles), fish and pork broth, chashu (braised pork belly), scallions, naruto, nori, ajitamago (marinated egg), and menma (bamboo shoots). Thick Tsukemen noodles were provided by SUN NOODLES.
This was VERY savory ramen with heavy mushroom and scallion flavors. This was also plated with some of the ingredients and the broth separate from the noodles. The noodles in this ramen are meant to be dipped into the broth which made for a more unique serving.
Tired of ramen yet? Is that even possible? We’re on to the Tantan Men from Susuru. This bowl was filled with hazelnut, chicken and pork bone broth, pea tendrils, eggs, chili oil, scallions, and sesame sauce. The noodles featured in this ramen are the Thick Wavy KAI-16W, also by SUN NOODLES.
This was our favorite of the six! The ingredients were amazingly tender and the broth was packed with flavor that had a little bit of spice. Don’t worry though, it wasn’t too spicy! We’d certainly order this dish again outside of the event!
And FINALLY, we have the Root Down Ramen by Ichicoro Ramen. This unique dish had roasted squash/mushroom broth, mushroom tare, kabocha squash, carrot, assorted mushrooms, brown butter corn, chasyu, pepita furikake, negi, ajitama, chili oil, and warm spices. The SUN NOODLES noodles were the Medium Wavy Noodle Classic -20W.
This was one of the most unique ramens we’ve ever had. The squash and corn added a great sweetness to the dish and the egg had a nice salty soy flavor. Plus, the broth tied it together!
After all six ramens were served, you could vote for your favorite via QR code. Morimoto Asia’s chef ended up winning the best ramen of the evening with the Surf n’ Turf Ramen!
The event wrapped up with a Mochi Donut for each ticketed guest plus more of the sake and beer samples. The Mochi Donuts were a bit chewier than we expected them to be but very good! They weren’t too sweet which made them a great, light ending after all the heavy noodles.
So, what did we think?
Overall
Overall, we had a wonderful time at this event. The $80 ticket price seems fair for the six bowls of ramen, drink, and dessert that you get — plus, it’s for a good cause! It was a well-organized evening and the competitive aspect made for a unique event. If/when the Ramen Rumble returns next year, it may be worth a visit for big ramen fans.
