Disney World’s Genie feature is officially live in the parks now.
Guests can buy Genie+ for $15 per ticket, per day to skip the line for most Disney World rides. But the two most popular rides in each park have a separate fee to skip the line. These rides use Individual Attraction Selection (or Pay-Per-Ride), and the fees range in price from $7 to $15 right now. So how long would the wait have to be for you to pay to skip the line? We asked our readers, and here’s what you said.
If you buy Genie+, you can make reservations to skip the line on most Disney World rides throughout the day, and they’re all included in the $15 per ticket, per day that you pay at the beginning of the day. But you can only skip the line on those Pay-Per-Ride attractions by paying an additional fee.
Of course, you can always wait in standby for any Disney World ride, unless it’s using a virtual queue. Right now, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure is the only Disney World ride with a virtual queue. The boarding pass for the virtual queue is also free, but spots are limited, and it can be a little tricky to use.
Click Here to Learn How to Use the Virtual Queue for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure
We asked our readers on Instagram how long the wait time would have to be for them to pay the extra fee on those popular rides, and we got a LOT of responses.
Probably the most popular response was 60 minutes or more. A lot of people said one hour was about their limit: “I can do an hour, but after that I will consider buying one.”
Another reader said any ride that had a wait time “consistently over 60 minutes,” so they’d keep an eye on the times throughout the day and shell out the cash if it didn’t drop.
Some people were willing to wait in standby a little longer before paying to skip the line. One person said “Over 2 hours, and it would have to be for a ride I couldn’t miss (like Rise of the Resistance or Flight of Passage).”
Several other people agree that it “depends on the ride.” One reader “would only buy for Rise of the Resistance, Flight of Passage, or Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure.” These rides were listed several times as ones that people would be more willing to pay for.
Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure in particular was popular, since the only other way to get on is through the virtual queue. One reader said they’d pay “for the one with a boarding group that I don’t want to stress about.” It can be tough or stressful to get the boarding group (your spot in the virtual queue), so the Pay-Per-Ride might be a good back-up option for some families.
A lot of people said that it depends on the situation. One reader said “With two young kids? 40+ minutes.” And we saw that sentiment in other responses, like this one from another reader: “We have a toddler, so anything over 30 mins and I’m buying.”
It might also depend on how many people are in your group. Pay-Per-Ride can get expensive fast when you’re buying passes for a lot of people. One reader said, “Anything over an hour probably, but I only have two people to pay for.”
For some readers, they thought the price was worth it for some rides no matter what. One reader said, “Making sure I get on the ride? Worth it.”
Others were adamant that no matter the wait time, they would not buy Pay-Per-Ride reservations. We had responses like “I wouldn’t ever,” “No limit; will never pay for lightning lanes,” and “Never going to pay for this.”
In a poll on YouTube, we found that the responses to this same question — how long the wait has to be for you to pay to skip the line — were very even! “Over 60 Minutes,” “Over 120 Minutes,” and “Standby for me no matter what” all had the exact same percentage at 27% of respondents. “Over 90 minutes” had a little fewer, at 19%.
In general, we found that our readers are very split on this question. A lot of the responses showed that it depends on the situation. If people are traveling in a small group or with young kids, they might be more likely to buy Pay-Per-Ride reservations, even if the ride’s wait time isn’t super high. Other people will wait for much higher times before paying the extra fee to skip the line, or they will choose standby no matter what.

Not planning to pay. I’ve found myself not following what’s been going on in the parks the past few years – I didn’t even realize Remy was virtual and we have a mini trip this weekend. We go frequently enough that if it’s something I want to ride, I’ll get up early and do it first thing or wait in standby. I think it’s a money grab to charge for something that was free and as DVC, AP, I’ve spent enough. We even recently discussed selling one of our DVC properties because we have enough points for when we want to visit and don’t see a need to spend more money with little return.

We were annual pass holders that have decided to take a break from Disney. The greed has become more than we are willing to accept. It has been nice to spend our vacation time and resources on other vacations not related to Disney. It’s sad but also feels good to say thanks for the memories but we are done .

Disneyland just raised admission prices. Disney management knows that people (Super Fans) have an addiction and cannot break the “habit”. Perhaps the next generation will get clean and sober of Disney and find that they do not enjoy being taken. They won’t know that once upon a time, there was Magic.

I Have been going to Disney since it first opened, have had many passes to benefit the family to get to go since we live about 3 hours away. Have seen so many changes come to the park and not to benefit the customers, I mean start charging to park at the hotels several years ago, the price of passes has skyrocketed beyond the working family budget, and almost mine, I mean a pass 6 years ago you could by 4-5 of compared to 1 of todays passes. The transportation from the airport going away, I know the train is coming but that is still several years away, Mears is stepping in but it will not be cheap I am sure. Now pay extra on top of your daily pass or yearly pass to get through a line faster, I will never pay that, your just giving Disney the go ahead to fleece the Lemmings more, luckily I can pick the time of year to go when it is not so bad or the days of the week, but still, it is getting obscene how many things disney charges you for, But I guess they have not had the last several years making profit, HAHAHA. I will go again how many more visits I will have in me I don’t know but for me it is losing the shine off the Happiest Place on Earth, just terrible.

Joe said the only thing left is pay bathrooms…not true. How about day bus passes, in app purchases with “My Disney Experience”, pay parking lot tram service, admission charge for all shows, character meet and greet..autographs extra. There is plenty of room for expansion…of the Disney profits.

I thought I was in the “no way” camp but I’m going for a quick 4 day trip July 4th-7th and with it just being 2 of us, I may break down and pay for it in MK and DS. I may have to pay for Rise of Resistance and Remi since it’s new. I’m a rope dropper so hopefully we can knock out a few long line things but July will be miserable crowded and hot. I just hate no magical express, magic bands and fast passes. I’m getting real close to being a member of the “Done with Disney “ club. But then I say that every year when things change. NO ELECTRICAL PARADE WAS HEARTBREAKING.

When Universal started this type of process I just knew that it was just a matter of time before DisneyWorld did it. I don’t like it but I’ll do it because I live several states away and it is an annual trip for a few of us. I’m a huge Star Wars fan so I will shell out the cost to ride ROTR. I am not sure about the others. I am bringing my 8 year old nephew this year so it will help to have the shorter wait times but again it is because of the situation as well. I guess they are trying to make up for the Closed days of Covid, but then again all of us are still dealing with the aftermath of it. The price of the Halloween and Christmas parties has really skyrocketed as well. I love Disney but it is getting hard to do.

No way !! Was going to plan a weeks vacation but will go somewhere that my family doesn’t have to be on their phones all day..
We can have a wonderful vacation somewhere else for the price of a Disney one. So sad! We have had lovely trips there in the past. Will be a long time before we return.
DaveComedy says
A previous comment hit the nail on the head … we should all start referring to it as the “Rich Line” and “Poor Line”, because that is what it boils down to. Disney will charge more for every last thing until people stop paying for it. No different than Las Vegas nickel and diming for every last thing (paid parking, resort fees). Corporations will drain every drop until the bleeding stops, and then the tide will turn.
Steve says
We are currently planning our December trip. As a family of five we voted to look at this as a park admission increase per person so we had make some cuts to stay on budget. Good by PhotoPass and one of our sit down dinning reservations. Have to just balance things out and hope Disney management see this as a bad idea.
E says
Yes, I am very disgusted with this new program. As I am a loyal customer and have been to Disney 42 times, I am not a fan of paying these extra fees. I do not like that they took away the fast pass as it was. It worked great and had no issues. If Disney wants to gouge the loyal returning customers they had, they can do away with my money and I will go to other places. They took away Magical Express, they charge for parking at the resorts, fast pass is a thing of the past, can only use park hopper after 2:00 PM, and now we are expected to pay for Genie + and certain rides in order to see the parks…not for me. Ridiculous.
TonyH says
We travel from the UK and stay for a fortnight so we should have plenty of opportunity to catch the rides we want. There’s always the extra park hours but if we still can’t get on the rides then so be it. We’re not paying for something that should have remained a perk for hotel guests, who pay well over the odds anyway, and is now just a money grabbing scheme.
Ralph says
We out of Hawaii and we do not get to Orlando on an annual basis. We want to make the most of our time there and if we need to pay, so be it. Waiting beyond an hour is waste for us. Those that live in the area or in reasonable driving radius can afford to wait or skip rides are fortunate enough that they can visit several times a year or at least annually.
Richard+Mercer says
It’s a bad situation as we will no longer be able to trust Disney’s estimate of wait times. If people won’t pay until the wait is over 30 minutes, then guess what?! If the lines are somewhat long, the will be listed as over 30 minutes….
Heidi says
I refuse to pay extra to go on a ride quicker. Especially since it was free prior to COVID. My family is going in February for 10 days. We are a family of 5. For us to pay for lightning lanes for our 8 days of tickets, it would cost us an additional $600. Add to that the Fancy Rides, and I’m looking at a minimum of at least $75 a day if we want them. Which is an additional $600. I’m not willing to shell out an additional $1,200 for a trip that is already more expensive than when we originally booked it, for something that was free. I’m a long time Disney lover, having been a cast member myself when I was in college. But this nickel and dining for every little thing is getting a bit ridiculous. This will be the only trip I will be bringing my kids on. I can spend the same amount and go to Europe…
Hello Kitty says
As longtime, local, frequent guests of Disney we are really saddened by all of the price increases and new ways Disney is manufacturing to be able to charge money. Disney makes a big deal about being inclusive and welcoming to all, but I find it really hard to believe when so many are not able to afford to visit, or are intimidated by what’s required to visit; or simply don’t want to bother with all of the reservations that are mandatory to do most everything. Instead of being inclusive, it is becoming exclusive. It’s not the same Disney. We as a family are grateful for the wonderful memories that we made over the past 30+ years. It’s looking like that’s what we’ll have left.
Karen says
We will not be paying for Lightning passes of any kind.
I am a lifelong fan of all things Disney, DVC member, annual pass holder (on and off), but we will not pay extra. We LOVED the old paper fast pass system, that was my favorite but also remember before any of that. We will wait and enjoy the theming in the queue.
Pat Jackson says
Well, as much as I love Disney, my best friend and I have decided that we will not pay extra to ride anything. If we get on a ride, great. If we don’t, we don’t. The price of the park ticket is enough. So many comments I have read recently have noted that the wonderful Disney magic is gone. I say with much sadness, it’s probably true. I hope to visit Disney again in early 2022 however my hard earned $ will not be spent on riding anything. I sure hope the “powers to be” recognize how much they have disappointed true Disney fans. And as always, thanks AJ for all of your wonderful posts.
Kathy says
We have been going to WDW since 1973 and have always had fun but every time we go, it has cost more and more. Now both our children own DVC so they could take our grandchildren the way we took them. However, we are all tired of all the price increases over the years and this is the last straw. It is absolutely ridiculous that the Mouse charges so much for every little thing. I am so glad I don’t have little kids of my own anymore because I’d be extremely upset not being able to take them to the “Happiest Place on Earth” because we couldn’t afford it.
What is the matter with you people that you put profits and your bonuses before the happiness of children? Poor Walt must be crying in heaven.
You charge more than enough for everything else, I will never pay so I don’t have to stand in line. That is absolutely highway robbery!!! God forgive you for your greed!
Carol Tricarico says
I’d rather stand in line for 90 minutes than give Disney another dime. The prices of hotels, food and tickets are already sky high and they’ve taken away most of the perks. Not to mention shows and parades have not been totally reinstated. Disney is quickly losing the magic for me.
MamaK says
Went to the parks this past week. I was surprised at how many people paid for the lightning lanes. If I didn’t plan this trip in July, I wouldn’t have gone. No more spontaneity with going to the parks as everything needs to be planned out. Thankfully I’ve been to Disney many times so I don’t feel like I’m missing out not getting on all the rides I’d like, including ones I’ve never done. It will be a long time until I return.
Cindy Jackson says
I will not pay extra for a ride. Tickets are expensive enough
Also, it would be impossible to plan ahead since you have to start genie + selections at 7 am. I liked selecting fast passes and making dinner reservations a month out. Less stress. I don’t want to waste vacation time trying to plan my day.
Glenn h says
I will not pay extra. Been going since 1979. I have been a big fan and have typically stayed a full week.
Going to jump ship and head to universal studios. Then maybe do a single day at Disney. Disney jumped in with both feet with new prices, added prices. Catering to the upper class, not your diehards who still found a way to vist during the economy down turns.
Barry says
WDW once was different than the real world. Now it’s full of apps, cues, and real world entanglements. WDW’s magic is no more. WDW is no longer an escape from the real world, it’s where you go to be nickeled and dimed every where you turn. Walt would be so sad.
Brandon says
I will NEVER pay for this service.
It’s because of people that ARE willing to pay over and over that gives Disney this idea that they can charge for EVERY SINGLE amenity that used to be included in the cost.
Now that people are buying these ridiculously overpriced Christmas After Hours TICKETS, Disney will only be raising the prices and taking away and normal parties from the past.
The next thing with be Paid meet and greets. Mark my words.
And because people will be willing to pay the premium, Disney will then find something else to charge for.
Nick says
For me it will depend on may factors. I am a pass holder so If I miss a ride I can go back and do it again another time. But I am rethinking that especially with the increased pass holder prices that I will have to pay for the new ones when my current runs out. Though I have time on that. But in terms of Genie+ and the individual ride pay, that depends on the day an the park. I would likely not use it for EPCOT or Animal Kingdom. Maybe once I would use the Individual attraction for Remy’s but not for Frozen, enjoy that ride but it is not a must do. Neither is Flight of passage for me, but Expedition Everest is. So that will depend on the day. For Hollywood Studios. that would depend on how busy it is. Though I would consider it for Rise of the Resistance for a one time. As I have yet to be able to ride it. (Gotten in the virtual queue a few times only to have it break down of the day I was there.) Magic Kingdom I would not use the individual attraction at all. The two on that are rides that I can personal skip. Because Seven Dwarfs mine train was boring for me, and while I like Space Mountain it often gives me a headache so if I do that it is may last ride.
That being said I would only do if on busy days or If i went with a group of friend, and they wanted to get on as much as possible (Though they would pay for their own). This new system still annoys me though as I too feel that I am already paying enough. This is also the reason that I do not often go to universal studios as it is expensive. I will have to see what the best price and deal is come time to renew the pass.
Dorothy McGeagh says
Never never never. My money was earned by hard work and I will not waste it on wdw executives who don’t deserve the mega dollars they get.
I am as important as they are so instead of stealing my money by taking away all the free things that were once included in the expensive tickets take a look in the mirror and tell me you see an honest face. A face that appreciates the people that pay your salary , that have come to love wdw only for you to take it away from us by price gouging.
Diane says
I agree that Walt is spinning in his grave and if he could return, he would be hitting the Disney executives upside the head! How do they expect the average family to be able to afford not only the price per park admission, food, lodging, snacks and drinks as well as a few mementos , and then throw a price per ride on top of all that? I was under the impression that the admission price was the way to get away from that old fashioned pay-per-ride format- silly me!
I also agree that this is about greed. Yes, Disney lost money during the pandemic, but this is not the way to make up the shortfall. Maybe they should take a few million less per year and bite the bullet like the rest of us trying to recover economically from the last 2 years.
I’m at the point where I’ve been going at least 3X a year for 15 years and a pass holder since 2017- and I’m rethinking whether it’s worth it or not. This new pay-per-ride format will make the Disney experience only for the wealthy.
CT says
It’s time to take a stand and say NO MORE! I cancelled our trip this year to WDW because of Genie+, Lightning Lanes etc. I will NOT be paying for individual rides or Genie+, when I have to pay so much for a ticket in the first place. Then I have to get a reservation to go into a park. My annual pass is a park hopper, which you can’t even get the benefit of anymore. I sadly own DVC too, which I am planning to sell .This price gouging and the continual reduction in service and value, has destroyed any good feelings I have about WDW. I booked to go to Universal instead. Bob Chapek and the current leadership is ruining WDW. I’m glad my kids are grown up now so we can take vacations elsewhere. Done with Disney !
Doug says
We are are at Disney now for a week long vacation – the first 2 days have been bad. We don’t ride a lot of rides, so we got done what we wanted the first day, the stand by times were close, accept for the Jungle Cruise (it took an extra 40 minutes). They were letting all the lightning riders on and only when the line was empty did they let stand by riders on. This was very annoying because the lightning riders just dribbled in, so they would wait for them to walk the whole queue and by they time they got on another group would be in the queue and they would wait for them, so on and so on, so standby riders got on very infrequently. We had a similar thing happen on the second day at toy story; the stand by line was listed as 30 minutes and it took 100+ minutes. When we got off the ride, I checked the wait time and it said 50 minutes, and the line was much longer then when we started. The whole experienced spoiled the day so we left and since we are not staying on site, it saved us a $100+ in lunch/dinner expense.
We were not the only ones in line that were upset. The way that I see it there will be 2 classes of park goers, the ones that spend the extra money and ride the rides and the others that just waste their money to stand in line and ride 1 or 2 rides a day. As a kid I use to go to Disney during the holiday when there was only the magic kingdom and I had to pick what 3-4 rides for the visit. These times are coming back, but now you will need to spend $100+ / day to enjoy them. With the way that all of the other costs have gone up food, drink, parking, etc. its not worth it. This is probably that last time we will be visiting Disney ending a streak of visiting Disney every other year (and in some cases every year) that goes back 25 years.
So to answer the question we will not pay more to skip the line we will skip Disney all together.
Stephanie Rogers says
This might be the last year we purchase annual passes. I love going to Disney but the magic is gone. It’s now become a once in a lifetime trip for many families. So sad. I won’t pay for any extras if we go we probably won’t spend as much on buying things and eating there. Probably will stay off property. The people paying extra are going to be families with tired young kids who are only there for a short amount of time. People who are coming from a foreign country and also have a limited amount of time. Wealthy families who can blow the budget. Older people who are retired and don’t want to be bothered with long lines.
Kira says
I’m really disappointed with Disney. Universal Studios can have my money going forward.
FL-Dad says
We are (Sorcerer) Annual Passholders, and love 25 minutes away from WDW. We were at Disney this past weekend (10/23-10/24) and managed to get on the virtual queue for Remy’s ride on the 1:00pm queue opening. It told us to return at 7:00pm, but when we did, the time changed to an additional 150 minutes, which was right before EPCOT closing time. We chose to leave.
I can see paying for Genie+ if you only come to Disney once per year or if your trip is a “once in a lifetime” type of thing. There are only so many hours you can be in the park, and so many days of your vacation. Paying a bit extra to do what you want would be totally understandable in that case.
But for us, we can visit WDW any time we want, so paying extra for rides is kind of a non-starter. For the money we all pay for everything from snacks to meals, paying more for rides is sort of an insult. But WDW is closer than where I work, so we are under no pressure to ride any ride at any given time.
SML says
Not paying extra: NO WAY! Disney has lost its magic as far as I am concerned. My family of 10 went to Disney in February of 2020. Our trip was perfect. We had Magical Express, free Fast Passes, no park reservations required and the food plan. All our arrangements were made before we left home. All we had to do when we got to Disney was have fun, relax and enjoy! That’s the way it was and that’s the way it still should be. Bring the MAGIC back, Disney! Nobody wants to spend their entire vacation, which is costing a small fortune to begin with, on their phone trying to schedule things that used to be free !
Lisa R says
We (3 adults) too got a boarding pass for Remy on 10/19 and waited an hour in line which was frustrating. We then decided not to run to Rise of Resistance and buy the Genie pass for the first and one time we wanted to ride it. We also bought a Genie individual pass for Flight of Passage to avoid the run at rope drop. But, didnt realize surge pricing had increased the cost of that ride from the previous day! But, for us it was worth it since we knew we would only do them each once.
But, I agree with the money concerns. I also saw it tonight with the garden at MK in front of Casey’s reserved for only VIP tours or D33 members. It is ridiculous that it is now all about making money.
Michelle D says
When I bought my ticket, the wording stated it includes Fast Pass Plus. (Yes, bought prior to COVID and going to the parks simply because the ticket will expire.) The cash grab seems a bit too much. The prices increased but the experiences have not. I don’t get to see the citizens on Main Street or in Hollywood. The shows I liked (Fantasmic and Festival of the Lion King WITH Tumblemonkeys) are no longer part of the experience. What is ?? Well, character meals without character meet and greets… FPP now charged $15/ticket /day AND doesn’t include my ability to schedule the times, ride my favorites twice in a day, or even schedule the really good rides. Thnkgs have changed. I’m going to use the tickets I have now, and then probably not go back. Sad, really, that Disney is losing mutiple thousands of dollars for the sake of a feww hundred.

Disney has so many loyal fans that keep them in business. Me included .
I understand that Disney is in the business of making $$$$.
That being said, why not treat Guests with some courtesy.
Making a reservation to just enter a park and then paying to ride an attraction?
People look to Disney and Mickey for comfort and hope.
We’re going through a Pandemic and it would be nice if going to WDW didn’t include so many rules and restrictions not to mention so many added costs.
Remember what Walt said, Give guests what they want, keep it clea, be friendly cause it’s a good business policy. it will live long after Disney.

This just seems to be a big money grab! Disney is my happy place, but I have my limits. I have a 12 extended family trip we will probably cancel. We tried to make a trip every two years for at least my wife and myself. Genie+ and all the lost items like Magical Express and extra magic hours for only certain resorts are all contributing factors to canceling my Disney trip. All this reduction in services and value have soured me on Disney. I have noticed Universal has been increasing their value. Big mistake Disney.
Brian Gamache says
Will never pay extra to get on a ride. Fastpass was good. Fastpass+ was bad and paying for Genie is downright disgusting. In over 100 trips over the last 35 years to Florida, we ‘ve always stayed onsite at WDW and only visited Universal twice and Seaworld and Aquatica once in all this time. I expect to see a lot more of these other parks and Florida attractions in the future as WDW continues to increase prices even while having reduced attractions and entertainment due to COVID. WDW has always been expensive but they used to bend over backwards to provide a fantastic “show”. In the last 10-15 years it’s been more like “just give us your money!… we don’t care”. We will continue to own DVC and will likely continue to enjoy beautiful dining experiences at WDW hotels but would rather stay at Univ. hotels and get front of line access included.

I will NOT pay extra to ride at Disney. I am in a wheelchair and cannot ride very many rides as it is! And my husband won’t be paying to ride. We pay enough already! Bad decision to do this Disney!!

For the price they charge to park and get in, then breakfast lunch, snacks and dinner, they should give you at least three free passes. Isn’t about $1,000 dollars and day enough.

I was at Disney World from 10/14 thru 10/19, and the actual wait time for stand-by was almost never as long as the time posted. It was usually shorter than the posted wait by 20 minutes, sometimes even better than that. We did buy the $15 Genie + on the 19th, just to see how much difference it made. We had very short waits in the lightning lane, even practically walked on to Soarin’. That being said, whether I buy it again would depend on the crowds and the park. As far as the pay-per-ride, that would depend on both the length of the stand-by line and the cost of the ride that day.

I se this is a hot topic, for good reason. To put it bluntly, Disney can care less about all the people that are complaining,. For every ONE person that says not ever again, there are 100 that will say, sure I will do it. The bottom line is that this new system of money grabbing is here to stay, there is NOTHING that we can do. Disney does not “see” the complainers, they only eye the guests that want to spend their money. It’s the hard reality. Millions more will come, new Magical experiences will happen, with or without you.

Don’t ever underestimate the power of your voice….
Yes, I know there are 1000 people in line behind me ready to go to WDW.
But bad press is bad press. If we don’t try we won’t know what impact we might have.
If it doesn’t help, so be it, I tried.
FYI – Change.org has a petition out there – if you are so inclined – check it out!
Hope we can all reunite some day in our happy place once again.

Thank you, DFB, for the good information. You are my go-to for keeping up with all things Disney. I admit I am addicted to WDW, but this has been very disheartening and I agree with all of the comments. We will go back to Disney, but instead of staying on property with a dining package, we will now stay off property and have more non park days, so we will actually spend LESS at WDW than we have in the past. I will NOT pay for Genie plus. They almost lost us staying on property when they began to charge for parking, but we swallowed that bitter pill and continued to stay on property, but enough is enough. We are crying “Uncle” Disney!
