Disney World is a huge operation, and sometimes things don’t go 100% to plan.
We’ve seen with previous emergencies that Disney World is prepared to handle all kinds of problems in the parks, wherever they may occur. Last night, many guests in and around Magic Kingdom experienced one of those problems as the power went out, shutting down some transportation and leaving guests in the dark.
According to Fox 35 Orlando, Magic Kingdom and some nearby hotels experienced a power outage at about 6PM.
The outage affected some transportation in this area, including the Monorails and Ferryboats. Guests on social media reported that buses were packed full due to the limited transportation options.
According to one guest, the power went out at both Disney’s Wilderness Lodge and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, which are both located near Magic Kingdom. From what we can tell, it sounds like the outage didn’t affect the entire hotel at either location; some areas at each hotel lost power.
The power was restored before 10PM on the same night at both Magic Kingdom and nearby hotels.

We are long time Disney World enthusiasts and have traveled there many times with our children and now with our grandchildren. We were recently at Disney World in November of 2021 and stayed at Pop Century Resort. Although we enjoyed the trip with our family, a lot of the Magic and convenience that we have come to expect was definitely missing.

Hard to believe that Disney does not have a back up generator system in place to protect guest services at these resorts.

Ken,
Regarding generators, powering a resort like the Wilderness Lodge or the Polynesian would not be a simple as stopping by Home Depot for a generator. It would require a very large generator in its own building and a storage tank for several thousand gallons of diesel fuel. The generator would need to be wired into the main power supply for each building on property. Cost for such a setup could run well into 6 figures for each resort, not to mention the regular maintenance, testing, and changing out the diesel fuel each year. Long-lasting power outages are relatively rare, so such a setup would not be very cost-effective. I could see having a generator to keep the monorail going in an emergency.

Looks like the small amount of solar power at disney world is not enough to keep “key”functions running. Shouln’t the monorail be a priority? We were stranded on it last summer in the heat. NOT FUN AT ALL!

We are staying at Wilderness Lodge and were there yesterday. We experienced nothing.
