If you’ve spent more than a few days in Florida, especially in the summer months, then you’re probably well aware of the fact that it can…weather…from time to time (yes, we totally just made “weather” a verb).
Rain is quite common in the Disney World area, as is lightning. In fact, Disney World plans on these storms being a common occurrence with lightning rods set up all around the parks and resorts!
According to Spectrum News 13, the state of Florida recently regained its title as the “Lightning Capital of the U.S.” The state of Oklahoma was the previous titleholder.
The title is calculated by total lightning strikes per square mile, and in 2021 Florida averaged 223 lightning events per square mile for the whole year. On top of that, Geneva, FL (just east of Orlando!) was named the new lightning capital of the state, with 857 lightning strikes per square mile in 2021!
When lightning arrives in Disney World, some outdoor rides and attractions will temporarily close.
