Disney has made a lot of live-action adaptations of their classic films in recent years.
We’ve seen movies like The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Dumbo, and more all receive the live-action treatment. And, Disney doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon! More live-action films are coming including The Little Mermaid, Robin Hood, and Hercules. And now, There’s a new live-action adaptation of a Disney animated classic in the works.
A live-action adaptation of The Aristocats is in the works for Disney, according to Variety.
The script is set to be written by Will Gluck (Peter Rabbit, Easy A,) and Keith Bunin (Onward), with Gluck also producing the film.
The original, animated Aristocats was released in 1970 and is about a family of aristocratic cats living in Paris. The cats are kidnapped by the owner’s butler and abandoned in the country when the butler learns that the cats are going to receive a huge fortune from the owner. The cats befriend alley cat Thomas O’Malley to help them get home and save their fortune.
The film was a box office success and grossed over $191 million worldwide, according to Variety. Some of the most famous songs from the film include “The Aristocats” and “Ev’rybody Wants to Be a Cat.”
Not much is known yet about the film adaptation, since it’s so early in development, but sources did say that even though its main characters are animals, it would have a similar look to the Lady in the Tramp live-action film Disney made in 2019, according to Deadline.
