Disney Springs is home to a lot of great dining, from quick-service options like Chicken Guy! and Polite Pig to sit-down restaurants like Wine Bar George and Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’.
But one of the secret gems in this shopping and dining center is a sandwich shop called Earl of Sandwich. This place serves some of the BEST sandwiches in Disney World and probably anywhere. It makes sense — the owner is descended from the actual inventor of sandwiches! We stopped by to try a limited-edition item that’s made especially for all the plant-based eaters out there.
For a limited time, Earl of Sandwich has the Vegan Cannonballs! Sandwich.
The sandwich is made with vegan meatballs, vegan mozzarella, Italian seasoning, and meatless marinara sauce. So it’s basically a plant-based meatball sub! You can try it for $8.49. (There’s also a regular Cannonballs! sandwich on the menu for $8.99. That one has normal meatballs, mozzarella, Italian seasoning, and marinara sauce.)
We grabbed our lunch and went to sit by the Earl of Sandwich’s portrait to eat it. Our reporter (who is a plant-based eater) said that this sandwich was amazing! The meatballs were Gardein vegan meatballs (which our reporter was already a fan of), and the cheese was For Your Heart vegan mozzarella.
Unlike some vegan cheeses, this mozzarella didn’t become rubbery as the sandwich cooled. So if you’re not normally a fan of the plant-based cheese scene, you might still enjoy this one!
The marinara sauce was very flavorful and just a little bit sweet, so we really loved that. And of course, the bread is always *chefs kiss* perfect at Earl of Sandwich.
Our reporter said that, as a vegan, they thought the sandwich tasted exactly like a classic meatball sub. It’s really fun to have that option available, and the taste and textures were fantastic. They did note that non-plant-based eaters would probably prefer the regular Cannonballs! sandwich if you’re going for that familiar meatball flavor.
Since Earl of Sandwich doesn’t always have a ton of vegan options, it’s great to have a solid choice like this one on the menu.

I love seeing this! Back around the early 2000’s I worked with Disney for five years and when I travelled to WDW many times I stayed at a hotel within walking distance of what was then Downtown Disney and the Earl of Sandwich. It became one of my “go-to’s”, but being vegetarian what they had was great, but they didn’t have a lot to offer. Creative offerings like this are a wonderful option. Hopefully, it will get enough orders that they keep it, or something similar, on the menu. We’re planning a major “return to WDW” trip and I’m looking forward to spending some good time exploring Disney Springs. We’ve been to WDW a couple of times since then, but on one trip some of Disney Springs was still largely under construction, and on another trip we only had an afternoon available to explore. Not nearly enough!!!
