If you think you’ve tried all the snacks that EPCOT has to offer — you might have to think again!
There are all kinds of hidden food around Disney World that you’ve probably walked past HUNDREDS of times and never even noticed! So when we came across a unique snack tucked away in EPCOT, we had to check it out!
We were minding our business in EPCOT recently when we wandered into the China pavilion, where we found Crispy Crepes in House of Good Fortune. This treat is made with durian filling, and you may be wondering, what is durian? Well, durian is a fruit found in Southeast Asia, and it’s known for its potent odor!
According to Smithsonian Magazine, durians have a “notorious aroma likened to rotting meat, turpentine, and gym socks.” That’s not a combo you hear about every day! The smell of the fruit is so strong that it is actually banned in some spots (like on the Singapore Rapid Mass Transit).
BUT that doesn’t mean people don’t like this fruit. Smithsonian Magazine shares that a “small minority love the smell and the taste of it.” According to the Smithsonian Magazine, Anthony Bourdain once said it is “indescribable, something you will either love or despise.”
Sometimes the fruit is eaten raw, or you may find it cooked and used to flavor candies or other items in Southeast Asia. Smithsonian Magazine also shares that it is sometimes used in traditional Asian medicine.
Whether you love the scent or despise it, Smithsonian says “what everyone can agree on is that the fruit’s order…is uncommonly potent.” So when we saw that there was a treat made with this fruit in EPCOT, we were curious to see what it would be like!
A box of Crispy Crepes costs $5.95 before tax, and it comes with individually wrapped packages so you can share with everyone in your group. And if you really like this snack, there’s a good amount of packages for the price!
So what did it taste like (or better yet…what did it smell like)? As it turns out, our reporter was really surprised by the taste!
She said that the texture of the Crispy Crepes reminded her of Keebler Sugar Wafers (you know, the ones that generally come in flavors of strawberry, vanilla, or chocolate) but these had less filling. She also said that she initially thought she tasted coconut, but it was actually likely palm oil that took a front seat on the flavor bus.
They actually didn’t have a bizarre taste OR smell, and they mostly just smelled like a sweet cookie. There was also no aftertaste! Overall, our reporter said they were very unique, so if you’re willing to try something different than your standard Mickey pretzel and DOLE Whip (not that there’s anything wrong with those!) the next time you visit EPCOT, you could give this snack a chance!

They also had coconut flavor and ginger flavor. The coconut is phenomenal. The ginger is strong but nice if you like ginger. The durian flavor has a fruity flavor and didn’t lend itself as well to the crispy crepe (a very flaky cookie.) The coconut was my favorite and I hope to see them bring it back!
