“I kept dreaming of a world I thought I’d never see. And then one day…I got in.”
That line from Tron: Legacy could very well sum up how we feel about the TRON Lightcycle Run ride coming to Tomorrowland in Magic Kingdom. Construction continues on the ride, and we’ve been following its progress for what seems like FOREVER, but today, we’ve got an update for you!
The best way to get a good view of what’s happening with the Tron ride construction is from the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover. We don’t really need an excuse to ride the PeopleMover, but we’ll take it!
Recently, it seems that the exterior of the ride building is nearly completed! The canopy has been fully installed and the ride building looks pretty put together from the outside.
In the past couple of months, we’ve noticed ride testing happening a few times, and Disney even started doing full-speed tests of the ride vehicles. Once those are completed, the next phases of testing will continue with “test dummies” and then they’ll need to get safety approval before testing the ride with humans.
Outside of the building is where most of the work seems to be happening currently. We’ve spotted new equipment and barriers arriving in recent weeks as they start to level out the ground and move forward with the landscaping. Part of the pathway to the ride has already been constructed, but it hasn’t connected up with the main part of Tomorrowland yet.
However, it looks like this construction is also in progress over by Tomorrowland Light & Power Co, aka, Space Mountain’s gift shop. The side of the building has been blocked with construction walls for weeks, and it’s likely that this is where guests will walk to get to the new ride.
Behind Tomorrowland Light & Power Co, we’ve also noticed the installation of train tracks for the Walt Disney World Railroad. The railroad has been closed since 2018 due to TRON construction, and it seems as though Disney is slowly reconnecting it again. Maybe we’ll get to ride this classic attraction again soon!
From some angles on the PeopleMover, you can actually see the tunnel that was constructed near TRON for the railroad. The track had to be rearranged in order to accommodate this new ride, so we’ll definitely get some unique views when the railroad reopens.
TRON Lightcycle Run was initially scheduled to be done in time for Disney World’s 50th anniversary, which started last year, but that opening was delayed. Currently, Disney has not yet released a timeframe for when the attraction might open, and as you can see from our photos, there’s still a lot of work that needs to happen before it’s complete.
We’ll continue to keep an eye on construction progress for TRON Lightcycle Run and let you know if Disney makes any announcements about when it might finally open. So stay tuned for more Disney news!
