Sometimes, there’s no better feeling than bypassing that super long Disney World bus line after the Magic Kingdom fireworks, knowing your rideshare will be pulling up in a few minutes and you’ll be riding in cool comfort straight to your hotel. You’ll probably beat that bus line by a good 30 minutes, and maybe more.
Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft have become even more important for Disney World visitors since the free Magical Express transportation between the Orlando International Airport and Disney hotels has been discontinued. But rideshares just got more expensive, and we’ve got a quick look at WHY.
We noted earlier that Uber announced on March 12th, 2022, that it would be rolling out a new surcharge for Uber rides. Now Lyft has announced that it is doing the surcharge thing as well. That means that the two most popular rideshare services in Disney World will cost you a little more the next time you use them.
We’ll give you three guesses as to what this surcharge is all about (but we know you’ll only need one). That’s right — most of us are feeling that pain at the pump, especially rideshare drivers. According to AAA, the national average gas price today is $4.33 per gallon. That’s 34% higher than the gas prices a year ago (we just did math — write that down somewhere).
So how much MORE will your rideshare cost? We reported previously that the Uber gas surcharge will add $0.45 or $0.55 per trip, and Uber has pledged that ALL of that surcharge will go to your driver. Lyft hasn’t yet announced how much the surcharge will be per trip.
Uber’s surcharge is set to start on March 16th. The good news is that it appears the extra fee won’t stick around forever. Uber and Lyft are both calling the surcharge temporary, at least for now.
